Worth it? That depends entirely on what you're looking for. If you want a classic hero's journey with clear good vs. evil, this isn't it. The protagonist, Kaito, is less a chosen one and more a deeply reluctant bureaucrat thrust into a role he never wanted. His struggle is internal, about accepting responsibility rather than mastering cool sword moves.

That character focus is the novel's strongest suit for me—his relationships with the cynical spirit bound to the sword and the idealistic princess feel real and worn-in. The prose can be a bit dry in places, though. It reads like a translated work, which it is, and some of the cultural nuance might slip past. Still, the ending landed with a quiet, melancholic weight that's stuck with me longer than many flashier series.

As a fantasy reader, I'd say skip it unless you're desperate for something off the beaten path. The magic and setting are unique, I'll give it that, but the characters never clicked for me. They felt like archetypes going through motions. I got about halfway through before losing interest. Plenty of other titles do the 'sentient weapon' trope with more energy.

Man, I picked up 'The Sword of Nunoboko' after seeing it recommended in a few online circles for its world-building. Honestly? It’s a mixed bag. The initial premise with the fractured floating islands and the titular sword’s origin myth is genuinely inventive, and the magic system based on binding oaths has a cool, rigid logic to it.

But the pacing is all over the place. The middle third bogs down in political maneuvering between clans that felt repetitive, and I nearly put it down. It picks up again for the finale, but getting there is a slog. If you're a fantasy fan who values intricate politics above breakneck action, you might appreciate those sections more than I did. I finished it feeling the interesting ideas were buried under uneven execution.
