Jenny & Jay - Volume 1

Jenny & Jay - Volume 1

Johnny Simmons thrives on competition—whether in the pool, in playful bets, or in charming his way through life. He’s used to being in control, but when Jane Shepherd enters his world, she proves to be an unexpected challenge. Assigned to his study group, Jane is sharp, unfiltered, and unimpressed by his usual charm. Their first real interaction is filled with witty banter, subtle tension, and a clash of personalities that leaves Johnny both frustrated and intrigued. A fiercely competitive swimmer meets his match in a sharp-witted girl who challenges him at every turn, winning unexpected bets and forcing him to rethink what it truly means to win—not just in competition, but in love and life. Jenny & Jay - Volume 1 is the first installment in a five-novel New Adult series, following the lives of five childhood friends—Johnny Simmons, Paul, Brian, Aaron, and Daryl—all competitive swimmers bound by their deep friendship and relentless drive to win. While romance plays a central role, this is not a simple on-again, off-again love story; instead, the series explores the evolving relationships, rivalries, and personal growth of these young men as they navigate life, love, and ambition.

Boys Like Him

Boys Like Him

She loved him until she lost herself. Now, behind locked doors and shattered glass, she must learn to breathe again. When she first met Lloyd, he was magnetic and intoxicating. The kind of man who turned every head when he entered a room, who spoke in promises sweet enough to taste. With him, she felt chosen, cherished, and safe. But safety was an illusion, and love became a weapon. And slowly, piece by piece, he dismantled her until nothing of the woman she once was remained. Now institutionalized after a breakdown, she begins to piece together the brutal truth of what really happened in the shadows of their love story. Memories sting like open wounds: the manipulation disguised as tenderness, the apologies that blurred into threats, the desperate hope that tomorrow he'd be the man she fell for again. Yet beneath the grief and the shame, a quiet rebellion stirs, a vow to reclaim her voice, her freedom, and her life. Because this is not just a story of how she fell apart. It is a story of how she rises. Haunting, raw, and achingly intimate, Boys like him peels back the glittering mask of a toxic love affair to reveal the kind of darkness that hides in plain sight, and the unbreakable strength it takes to escape it.

What is the complete publication order of John Boyne novels?

I love a good list, so I made my own spreadsheet a while back. It has columns for UK title, US title (sometimes they differ!), year, publisher, and a note on genre. It starts with 'The Thief of Time' and goes up to 'All the Broken Places'. I even included his short story collection 'Beneath the Earth' which came out in 2015. That's often left off novel-only lists.

Having it visualised like that helps. You see the gaps—like the four-year pause between 'This House Is Haunted' and 'The Heart's Invisible Furies'. Wonder what he was working on then? Probably 'Furies', that beast of a book. Lists spark more questions than they answer, which is fun.

How should I read John Boyne books in chronological order?

7 Réponses2026-07-25 13:31:22
Think about it like a music album. Do you listen in track order, or do you shuffle to the hits? With Boyne, the hits are 'The Heart's Invisible Furies', 'The Absolutist', and 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas'. Listen to those first. If you like the artist's style, you'll go back for the deep cuts like 'A History of Loneliness' or 'The House of Special Purpose' later, in any order.

How do John Boyne’s standalone books connect when read in order?

7 Réponses2026-07-25 02:32:39
It's the same reason you might binge all of Scorsese's films. Different stories, different casts, but the same directorial eye, the same preoccupations with guilt, violence, and redemption. Boyne is like that. He's an auteur in novelist form. Reading in order is following the career of an auteur. You see his signature shots (the child's limited perspective), his favorite actors (the guilt-ridden man), his go-to genres (historical moral thriller). The pleasure is in recognizing the hand of the master, even when he's working on a new canvas. The connection is his unmistakable fingerprint on every page, which gets clearer and more confident with each book.

Are John Boyne’s books linked in a series or only by publication order?

5 Réponses2026-07-25 01:58:28
Okay, so I went down a rabbit hole on this once. Officially, no series. But if you're a completist, his bibliography is divided into adult novels, younger reader novels, and short story collections. Within those categories, they're still standalone. The only direct sequel is 'All the Broken Places' to 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas'.

Some fans online try to connect dots thematically—like seeing 'The Absolutist' and 'Stay Where You Are and Then Leave' as companion pieces about WWI—but they aren't narratively tied. Read them as individual experiences. His publication order is just a list, not a map.

In what order do the John Boyne historical fiction books go?

5 Réponses2026-07-25 05:03:23
It's interesting that he returns to history so often. I don't think of them in an order, but more as a collection. Each book feels like he's exorcising a different ghost from the past century. The ghost of the Holocaust, the ghost of WWI's unresolved trauma, the ghost of Ireland's oppressive social policies, the ghost of institutional abuse. Viewed that way, the 'order' is just which ghost you want to sit with first.

They're all haunting in their own right. 'The Absolutist' haunts me the most, I think, with its ending. It's the quietest but sharpest ghost of them all.

Which reading order works best for John Boyne’s children’s books?

6 Réponses2026-07-25 03:05:53
I envy anyone getting to read these for the first time. The order won't matter in the long run. What matters is that moment when a story clicks for a kid (or an adult) and makes them see the world differently. That can happen with any of them, in any sequence.

Just dive in. The water's fine, if occasionally heartbreaking.

What is the complete list of John Connolly books in order?

Library databases are great for this. Search the author, then sort the results by publication date. It'll give you the strict chronological output of his career, mixing all series together. That's the true 'complete list in order' of what he wrote and when.
