LOL, my literature degree is tingling. Everyone's nailing it, but now I'm just thinking about how my prof spent three weeks on the 'objective correlative' in Eliot and I still only vaguely get it. The themes are deep, but man, the academic jargon we build around them... sometimes I just want to say a book made me feel existential dread and leave it at that.

Myth and its uses! This is huge. After the 'disenchantment of the world,' authors didn't abandon myth; they repurposed it. Joyce uses Homer, Eliot uses fertility rites, Morrison uses African and biblical lore. They use ancient myths as a structural skeleton or a source of irony to highlight the emptiness of the modern world. It's a way of seeking order in chaos, or of showing how far we've fallen from collective, meaningful stories. The tension between the ancient, archetypal plot and the fragmented modern reality creates incredible thematic depth.

Laughter in the dark. The prevalence of black humor, satire, and the absurd as a response to horror. From Catch-22 to Slaughterhouse-Five, the only sane response to an insane world is to laugh. This isn't comedy for relief; it's comedy as a philosophical stance, a weapon against despair and authoritarian logic. It unites many works across the century—the idea that if you can't control the chaos, you can at least mock its ridiculousness. It's a theme of resilience through ironic detachment.

Okay, real talk: sometimes I think we over-analyze. Maybe the unifying theme is just 'people being complicated in a complicated time, written about in complicated ways.' But I guess that's not sexy enough for a seminar paper.

Transformation, literal and metaphorical. Werewolves, vampires, and shapeshifters in fantasy, but also the psychological transformations in 'The Metamorphosis' or 'The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'. The fear and desire to become something else is potent.
