It develops through restraint. The growth feels earned when Y/N isn't his therapist, but a witness. He learns to trust by having that trust never betrayed. He learns to express care through actions, not words—mending a jacket, showing up after a tough fight. The emotional arc is in him realizing he's allowed to have something soft and separate from his destiny. That's the real character growth: the shift from a instrument of his father's ambition to a person who owns his own life, and chooses to share it.
I think the mechanism is different from other 'My Hero Academia' pairings because his damage is so familial and internalized. With Bakugo, growth is often about externalizing and then managing rage; with Todoroki, it's about excavating something that's been buried under ice (literally and metaphorically). So a Y/N character acts as a kind of gentle archaeologist. They don't force anything, but their consistent presence creates a safe space for him to voluntarily uncover bits of himself. The emotional payoff isn't in a big confession scene, necessarily, but in the quiet moment where he voluntarily uses his left side to heat up their tea without being asked, or tells a stupid, dry joke. It's him reclaiming parts of himself he was taught to hate, and sharing that reclamation with someone else. That's why slow-burn is almost mandatory—the growth has to be granular, or it rings false against his canon personality. I've dropped fics where he's cracking smiles and making prolonged eye contact by chapter three; it just feels like a different character wearing Todoroki's face.
Honestly, a lot of it hinges on whether the writer lets him be awkward. Canon Todoroki isn't smooth; he's blunt and socially stilted. Fics that turn him into a poetic romantic right away lose the charm. The growth comes from him slowly, painfully learning to articulate feelings he's spent a lifetime suppressing. It's not grand declarations, it's a mumbled 'Your hair looks... warm today' after six months of dating. That feels like real progress for him. Also, the best ones don't forget his hero work. His emotional maturity is tied to his professional choices—learning to ask for backup, to value his team, to see saving people as collaboration, not a solitary atonement. Y/N becomes a mirror for that, someone he has to learn to be vulnerable with, which directly affects how he operates in the field.
The trajectory of emotional growth in Todoroki-centric fics is so fascinating precisely because his canon material gives us such a solid foundation—the trauma from Endeavor, the internal conflict over his fire, the slow burn of learning to trust. Writers who really dig into this understand it's not just about slapping a Reader-Insert onto his arm and calling it romance. The most resonant fics I've read treat his journey as a parallel track: his path toward self-acceptance runs alongside Y/N's own issues, whatever they might be. They don't heal him; he heals himself, but having a supportive presence observing and occasionally nudging him lets us see his progress in a more intimate, grounded way.
What really sells it for me are the small moments of character regression. A fic where he's had a breakthrough with his quirk control, then loses his temper at something trivial and accidentally freezes the kitchen countertop—that feels real. The emotional growth is never linear in good stories. It's two steps forward, one step back, and Y/N's reaction to those steps back defines the relationship's health. Do they panic? Do they get quietly frustrated but stay? The best authors use those moments to show Shouto learning that his worth isn't contingent on perfect control, which is a massive leap from his childhood.
I sometimes skip fics where his entire personality melts away after chapter two and he becomes just a blandly supportive boyfriend. The appeal is in the friction, the awkwardness, the sheer weight of his history. Watching him learn, through another person's steady presence, that he's allowed to want things for himself—not as a hero, not as a weapon, just as a person—that's the emotional core that keeps me coming back.

Olivia Jamerson spent years stewing in hidden rage for the person behind all her high-school ridicule and embarrassment. That person was none other than Joshua Taylor, son of the football coach and the famed bully of Westminster High. Students feared him, his friends revered him and teachers were sick of him.
Two years after graduation and leaving town, Olivia had changed her whole appearance and character so much that no one could recognize her. Drowning in the sea of New Yorkers, Olivia finally felt that she had left her past behind and become a whole new person.
At least that was the case until she bumped into the unlikeliest person she expected to meet in the big city—her old bully. Despite being annoyingly hotter than she remembered, the only thing that bothered her was that he was disturbingly nice, but worst of all, he did not remember her. Things turn a whole lot crazier when she finds out that Joshua has amnesia and when he starts flirting with her as if they did not have a complicated past.
A big city, sparks and tension, and two people—one with bitter memories of their relationship and one with a blank canvas eager to fill it with potential memories.
Will their tragic past catch up to them and will their horns lock once again? Will Olivia hold on to her grudges and lock him out of her life once again, or will she open her heart to the new and improved Joshua?
What happens when the tormented female lead in a novel wakes up and decides to get together with the second male lead?
Coincidentally enough, I'm transmigrated into the body of this tormented female lead!
She looked at her with contempt, her red heels clicking on the ground. A sinister smile is plastered on her face full of malice.
"Whatever you do, he's mine. Even if you go back in time, he's always be mine."
Then the man beside the woman with red heels, snaked his hands on her waist.
"You'll never be my partner. You're a trash!"
The pair walked out of that dark alley and left her coughing blood. At the last seconds of her life, her lifeless eyes closed.

Jade angrily looked at the last page of the book.
She believed that everyone deserves to be happy.
She heard her mother calling for her to eat but reading is her first priority. And so, until she felt dizzy reading, she fell asleep.
***
Words she can't comprehend rang in her ears.
She's now the 'Heather' in the book.
[No, I won't change the story. I'll just watch on the sidelines.]
This is what she believed not until...
"Stop slandering Heather unless you want to lose your necks."
That was the beginning of her new life as a character.

Neither of us realised that when two broken souls come together, it would be exactly what we needed to help one another heal. He shows me love, something I haven’t had since I lost my mother.
I soon learn that just because you are broken doesn’t mean it needs to stay that way. Your past doesn’t need to define you.
Possible Trigger Warnings: Physical abuse (It does happen, not often and not in too much detail). Rape, suicide, and self-harm are also mentioned. It doesn’t happen in the book, but it's discussed.

Famous author, Valerie Adeline's world turns upside down after the death of her boyfriend, Daniel, who just so happened to be the fictional love interest in her paranormal romance series, turned real.
After months of beginning to get used to her new normal, and slowly coping with the grief of her loss, Valerie is given the opportunity to travel into the fictional realms and lands of her book when she discovers that Daniel is trapped among the pages of her book.
The catch? Every twelve hours she spends in the book, it shaves off a year of her own life. Now it's a fight against time to find and save her love before the clock strikes zero, and ends her life.
I feel like the strength in Todoroki/YN fics often comes from that initial distance his character starts with. He's so closed off, wound so tight, and has this huge, complicated history with his family that he doesn't even know how to talk about. A writer can build emotional depth by having the YN character notice the small things—not just the scar, but maybe how he tenses when someone raises their voice too loud, or the way he always defaults to using his ice side for mundane tasks, like it's a reflex he can't break. The emotional work is getting him to a point where he chooses to use his fire around the YN, not because he has to, but because he wants to share that part of himself.
The development can't be rushed, though. A lot of fics mess up by having him spill his entire traumatic backstory in chapter two. Real depth comes from awkward silences that gradually become comfortable, from him learning how to accept a compliment without freezing up, and from the YN character having their own life and struggles that he, in turn, learns to support. It's a two-way street. Maybe the YN has a quirk they're insecure about, or family stuff of their own, and seeing Shouto navigate that gives him a new perspective on his own issues. The best fics make me believe he's learning how to be a person, not just a hero or a product of Endeavor's design, and the relationship is the catalyst for that.
I've read some where the emotional climax isn't even a big confession scene; it's something like him bringing two cups of tea, one slightly cooler because he used his quirk to get it to the exact temperature he remembers the YN likes. That kind of quiet, observed detail hits harder than any dramatic 'I love you' shouted during a fight, at least for me. It shows he's paying attention, he's learning care, and he's using the very power that was a source of pain to do something gentle for someone else.
