Point of view is crucial. Many stories are third-person but tightly focalized through a character's limited, often flawed, perspective. The language reflects their understanding of the world. If the translation's diction is more sophisticated or more crude than that character's mindset, the focalization blurs. We start hearing the translator's voice, not Maupassant's channeled through the character. The intimate, often claustrophobic tone is lost.

The biggest shift I notice is in dialogue. Maupassant's characters speak in a very class-coded, direct way. Translations sometimes homogenize their voices, making the aristocrat and the servant sound oddly similar, just with different vocab. That flattens the social critique. Also, the sexual tension and innuendo in stories like 'The Signal' are often either over-explained or scrubbed clean, changing the tone from charged realism to either vulgarity or primness.

The use of free indirect discourse is tricky. We slip in and out of a character's thoughts without quotation marks. A clumsy translation might over-punctuate or over-clarify these shifts, breaking the fluid, intimate tone. We should sometimes be unsure if it's the narrator or the character's own self-justification speaking. That ambiguity is intentional. Cleaning it up makes the psychology less complex and more didactic.

How do Guy de Maupassant’s twist endings shape his short stories?

LOL, my main takeaway from high school English was that Guy de Maupassant really hated fancy jewelry. Every story with a shiny object ended in someone's life being ruined. Dude had a vendetta against necklaces and probably nice hats too.
