I use index cards, but digitally, in a tool like Scrivener. Each card is a scene. I jot the POV character, the setting, and the core conflict/goal. The beauty is the drag-and-drop. I can sequence them chronologically, then step back and look for patterns: too many talking scenes in a row? A subplot that disappears for fifty pages? I color-code cards by storyline or character.

This tactile, spatial method lets me see the story’s rhythm and balance at a glance. I can pull a card out if a scene isn’t working, or duplicate one and try it in a different spot. The outline feels fluid and malleable, not like a prison sentence.

I borrow from RPG design: what are the key 'encounters'? Not just fights, but social encounters, exploration encounters, puzzle encounters. I outline a series of these set-piece encounters where the protagonist’s skills and morals are tested. The plot is simply the thread that moves them from one encounter to the next.

Each encounter in the outline has a clear goal, stakes, and potential consequences for failure. This keeps the story highly interactive and focused on dramatic, game-like moments of choice and conflict, which are inherently page-turning. The quieter, connective scenes are just brief respites between these designed highlights.

I use a ‘false start’ outline. I write a detailed plan. Then I throw it away and write a different one from scratch, trying to get to the same ending via a completely different route. The third outline is a hybrid of the best parts of the first two.

This process kills my darlings at the outline stage and pushes me past my first, most obvious ideas. The final outline is usually more clever, unexpected, and resilient because it’s survived a stress test of alternatives. The initial plan is just clay to be reshaped.

I use the 'seven-point system': Hook, Plot Turn 1, Pinch 1, Midpoint, Pinch 2, Plot Turn 2, Resolution. I define each of those seven moments in a single, powerful sentence. Those seven sentences are my entire outline. Everything else is fluid.

This gives me a solid, proven backbone without over-planning the journey between these pillars. It’s enough structure to prevent me from getting lost, but enough freedom to let the characters surprise me as I write the connective tissue. It’s the perfect balance of planning and pantsing for my brain.

How do I turn a fantasy story idea into a full series outline?

What's the emotional cost of the journey? Outline the series by listing the things the protagonist must sacrifice in each book to move forward—their innocence, a friendship, a physical ability, their moral certainty. By the final book, what's left of them? That trajectory of loss defines the series' tragic weight (or triumphant resilience). The plot points are just the mechanisms that force those sacrifices. This approach creates a profoundly moving character arc that readers will follow through any amount of plot, because they're invested in the person being slowly, irrevocably changed by their quest.

How can I turn a personal experience into a strong book idea?

Use a constraint. 'I will write about my failed relationship using only the metaphor of a shipwreck.' Or 'I will explore my career burnout through the lens of a fantasy hero who has already saved the kingdom and is now bored and alcoholic.' The constraint forces creativity and prevents a straight, maudlin retelling. It creates a layer of abstraction that lets you (and the reader) engage with the emotion intellectually and artistically, not just biographically.
