M.L. Rio's 'If We Were Villains' is a dark academia thriller about Shakespeare actors, not urban fantasy. For a truly hidden magical society within a real city, 'The Starless Sea' by Erin Morgenstern is more of a meta-fantasy about stories. The real-world parts are brief. 'The Ten Thousand Doors of January' has portals but is more historical. I feel like I'm recommending things that are adjacent but not quite hitting the brief. Maybe someone else has a better off-the-beaten-path suggestion?
The fan communities for some of these are great, too. The Dresden Files subreddit has intense, lovely debates about every tiny detail of the world. The Discworld fandom (though that's more comic fantasy) is wonderfully warm. Finding people to geek out with about how the magic works in your favorite version of London or New York is half the fun after finishing a good book. It extends the life of the story.

One simple boyfriend spell. One ancient book of magic. What could go wrong? At eighteen, I'm thrown from my normal life into the supernatural world. One moment I'm planning prom and the next, I'm on a one-way bus ride to Hollowheaven's Supernatural Academy where I won't be allowed to see my friends or interact with the rest of the world until I control my power.Whatever.This place is weird and I can't help feeling this is a mistake. But a dare at an initiation goes too far, I get in over my head.Who knew that I could conjure ghosts?I can't fall in love with guys who aren't even real— or alive. I've got to figure out a way to get them back into the afterlife before I can't walk away from them. Before I can't stand not to have them in my life. One thing I'm learning is that magic is never simple.**Sex scenes/explicit content, violence and gore. This story is about the forbidden love of not only a Witch and Werewolf but a lesbian couple. It takes place in good New Orleans. “Lily never imagined that her quiet life would change the moment she stepped into a hidden realm of magic. There, danger and desire collide, and every choice could cost her everything. Can she master her new powers and uncover the secrets of her world before it destroys her?”
Look into the 'Newford' books by Charles de Lint. He practically invented the subgenre of mythic fiction. The setting is a fictional North American city, and the stories weave together the lives of artists, musicians, and street kids with Celtic folklore, Native American spirits, and magic that lives in the alleyways. It’s less 'secret world' and more 'the magic is always there if you know how to see it.' The focus is on community and healing, not just supernatural crime-fighting.
