I got hooked on 'Trollhunters' the way I get hooked on any good ensemble show—because the voice cast feels like a group of friends you want to hang out with. The core lineup you’ll hear most often includes Anton Yelchin as Jim Lake Jr., Kelsey Grammer as Blinky, Ron Perlman as AAARRRGGHH!!! (yes, that’s his character’s name), Charlie Saxton as Toby Domzalski, Lexi Medrano as Claire Nuñez, and Amy Landecker as Barbara Lake. Those voices give the series its heart: Anton’s kid-next-door vulnerability, Kelsey’s warm, slightly scholarly tone, and Ron’s gravelly, affectionate monster vibes.
I should also mention that after Anton Yelchin’s tragic passing, Emile Hirsch stepped in to finish the role of Jim in later episodes and tie up the story. That shift is handled respectfully in the show and doesn’t break the emotional throughline. If you’re coming from other Guillermo del Toro projects or from the rest of the 'Tales of Arcadia' trilogy, you’ll notice the cast often overlaps with familiar names, plus a parade of great guest voices across the seasons.
I still get chills hearing the opening theme of 'Trollhunters' because those voices instantly set the tone. Off the top of my head the headline voices are Anton Yelchin (Jim Lake Jr.), Kelsey Grammer (Blinky), Ron Perlman (AAARRRGGHH!!!), Charlie Saxton (Toby), Lexi Medrano (Claire), and Amy Landecker (Jim’s mom, Barbara). A notable production fact: after Anton’s death, Emile Hirsch took over Jim’s voice to finish out the series. Beyond the leads, the show features lots of talented guest stars and character actors who pop up throughout the three seasons, which keeps the soundscape varied and fun. If you love voice acting, 'Trollhunters' is a masterclass in casting chemistry.
Sometimes I like to binge a single episode just to appreciate the voice work in 'Trollhunters'. The standout names you’ll hear are Anton Yelchin as Jim Lake Jr., Kelsey Grammer as Blinky, Ron Perlman as AAARRRGGHH!!!, Charlie Saxton as Toby, Lexi Medrano as Claire Nuñez, and Amy Landecker as Jim’s mom. Emile Hirsch later took over the role of Jim to finish out the series after Anton’s death, which was handled with care. Those performances carry a surprising amount of weight for a kids/YA show—they’re funny, earnest, and sometimes heartbreaking—so even if you watch for the story, the voice cast will keep you invested.
I’ll be honest: part of why I revisited 'Trollhunters' recently was to listen to how different actors colored the characters. The main cast is a neat mix of established names and younger voices—Anton Yelchin originally voices Jim Lake Jr., supported by Charlie Saxton as the goofy best friend Toby and Lexi Medrano as Claire, the clever and capable female lead. Kelsey Grammer brings an almost grandfatherly intelligence to Blinky, while Ron Perlman gives the big-hearted troll his gravelly warmth. Amy Landecker anchors Jim’s family scenes as his mom. After Anton’s passing, Emile Hirsch stepped in to voice Jim for the remaining episodes, and he does a fine job preserving the character’s arc.
What’s interesting from a fan perspective is how these actors’ prior work shades their performances here—Grammer’s timbre feels studious because of his history with more cerebral roles, and Perlman’s Hellboy-era growl gives the trolls a heroic, rough-around-the-edges quality. If you’re curious about voice continuity or how casting choices affect storytelling, listening closely to the seasons of 'Trollhunters' is really rewarding.

As a busy single father with a soft spot for anything cartoonish, it fills me with joy to mention the animated movie 'Trolls'. In this film, character Branch is voiced by none other than Justin Timberlake himself, a multi-talented artist who is not only a successful singer but also quite good at acting.
The voice behind Aaarrrgghh in 'Trollhunters' is none other than Fred Tatasciore, a legend in the voice acting world! He's brought so many iconic characters to life, from Hulk in various Marvel projects to Soldier: 76 in 'Overwatch'. What blows my mind is how he manages to make Aaarrrgghh both intimidating and lovable at the same time—those gruff yet gentle growls are pure magic. I binge-watched the series last summer, and his performance stuck with me long after.
Fun fact: Tatasciore often plays creatures or monsters, but he infuses them with such heart. Aaarrrgghh could've been a one-note brute, but thanks to his delivery, the character became this endearing, loyal friend. If you’ve heard his other roles, you’ll spot that signature depth. Makes me wish he’d do more behind-the-scenes commentary—I’d geek out over his process.
The voice cast for 'The Boxtrolls' is such a delightful mix of talent! Ben Kingsley brings this wonderfully sinister vibe to Archibald Snatcher, the villain who's obsessed with eradicating the Boxtrolls. Then you've got Isaac Hempstead Wright (yeah, Bran Stark from 'Game of Thrones') as Eggs, the human boy raised by the trolls—his voice has this innocent, curious quality that fits perfectly.
But the real surprise? Tracy Morgan as Mr. Gristle! His comedic timing is gold, and Richard Ayoade as Snatcher’s henchman, Pickles, steals scenes with his dry wit. Even Elle Fanning pops in as Winnie, adding this sweet, spirited energy. The casting feels so intentional—every voice adds layers to the quirky, stop-motion world. Honestly, it’s one of those films where the voices make the characters.
