Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed a drop in consistent, high-paying horror outlets over the last five years? It feels like the mid-tier has hollowed out. You have the elite pro-zines and then a sea of tiny passion projects paying in copies. Finding that middle ground—a site that pays a decent flat fee of $50-$100 per story—is the real challenge now.
I've had better luck with Patreon-supported collectives. Groups of writers band together, put out a monthly digital issue funded by subscribers, and split the revenue. It's less formal than a traditional magazine website, but the community is engaged and the payment, while variable, feels more direct. It's a newer model, but it's where I see a lot of innovation happening.
I get overwhelmed by the sheer number of options sometimes. So I just pick three target markets for the year and focus on them. Last year it was 'Nightmare', 'The Dark', and one specific anthology series. I studied every story they published for six months, tailored my submissions to their style, and kept sending my best work only to them.
I got rejected a lot, but I also got a personal note from an editor at 'The Dark' that helped me improve. Eventually, I sold a story to the anthology. The focused approach felt more manageable than spraying submissions everywhere. It felt like I was having a conversation with these publications, learning what they wanted, rather than just tossing stories into a void.

Dedicated to all the good girls who love being anything but innocent after the dark.
This is a book of shifter short stories. All of these stories came from readers asking me to write stories about animals they typically don't see as shifters.
The stories that are in this series are -

Horror short stories absolutely have a market online, and I’ve seen plenty of writers carve out niches for themselves. Platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) or Radish are great for self-publishing, and you can even bundle stories into collections for better visibility. I’ve bought a few indie horror anthologies myself—some authors build followings just through creepy, bite-sized tales. Subreddits like r/nosleep prove there’s an audience hungry for quick scares, too.
What’s cool is how social media can amplify your work. I’ve followed horror writers on Twitter who thread their stories or tease snippets on Instagram, driving traffic to their Patreon or Gumroad. The key is consistency and a strong hook—readers love atmospheric, unsettling setups. If you nail the vibe, they’ll binge everything you post. Personally, I’d start with a free story or two to build trust before monetizing.
I keep a 'graveyard' document for dead markets. Magazines fold constantly, especially small online ones. Before you submit, do a quick check: has their website been updated in the last year? Have they published an issue recently? Are social media accounts active? Submitting to a ghost town is a waste of time and locks your story up for months for no reason.
