I’ve been on both sides of this—reading and writing 'Marichat'—and tension is everything. It’s not just about the love square mechanics; it’s about taking their specific dynamic and cranking it up. What works for me is leaning into the physical proximity the rooftop meetings allow, but undercutting it with the knowledge that they’re lying to each other every second. Have Chat Noir lean in a little too close while making a joke, and have Marinette’s internal monologue scream because she knows Adrien is right there in her room, but she can’t say it. The best tension comes from the reader knowing more than either character, so every casual touch or shared laugh is layered with dramatic irony. It’s agonizing in the best way.
Another trick is using their respective pressures. Marinette is stressed about keeping her secret and being Ladybug; Chat is lonely and puts on a brave face. When they meet, that’s the one place those pressures could lift, but they can’t fully let go. So you write scenes where Marinette almost confesses out of sheer exhaustion, or Chat drops the flirty act for a second and looks genuinely vulnerable, only to snap back into character. The space between what they show the world and what they almost reveal to each other on that rooftop—that’s where the tension lives. It’s a tightrope walk of almost-moments.
Honestly? Stop making them so aware of the romantic potential right away. A lot of fics jump straight into 'oh no I have feelings for my civilian friend/crime partner' and the tension deflates. The real gold is in the denial phase. Marinette should be annoyed by Chat’s antics, not blushy. Chat should see her as a cool, sharp-tongued confidante, not instantly a love interest. Let the attraction build in the background through small, accumulating details: Marinette noticing how his laughter sounds different when it’s just them, Chat realizing he’s started tailoring his patrol route to pass her balcony.
The tension isn’t in the confession; it’s in the hundred little moments before they even admit something’s changed. Write the quiet conversations after a tough fight, the way they start sharing more personal fears without the masks fully coming off. The reader sees the bond deepening while the characters are still calling each other 'just friends.' That friction—between what we see and what they claim—creates a slow-burn pressure that’s way more satisfying than immediate pining.
Focus on the consequences. Every secret shared on the rooftop is a potential disaster. If Marinette lets slip she knows Adrien too well, Chat might piece it together. If Chat mentions a detail about his home life, Marinette’s brain should race. Tension thrives on the risk of exposure. So craft scenes where a slip-up feels imminent—a near-miss with a transformed Tikki, a phone notification from Adrien popping up at the worst time. Make the reader nervously scan every line for dangers they’ve spotted that the characters haven’t. The romantic tension is secondary to the gut-churning fear of the whole facade collapsing.

"Are you sure, Jake? I can be a very bad girl," I purred sexily, brushing my hands lightly over his pants. He stiffened and grabbed my hands.
"Bad girls get punished," He snarled.
"Would you like to punish me then?"

Cassian rammed in asking, "whose idea was this? To provoke me to fuck you? Who spiked my drink?" as Cassian asked he brought his palm down repeatedly on Orion's ass. Tears filled the boy's eyes and moans from Azriel and Orion echoed. "whose idea was it," Cassian growled. "nobody's" Orion moaned. Cassian reached around holding the base of Orion's cock. Stopping his orgasm but still kept pounding.
Till Orion cried frantically, “me Daddy, I did, fuck!!!" Cassian laughed sadistically and said, “then you should bear the consequence of your actions. I'll fuck you till the drugs wear off. It's gonna be a long night"

These are the tales society whispers about but never dares to speak aloud: the aching pull of step-parents and step-children, the dangerous heat of family secrets, and the kind of love that thrives in shadows. From scorching heterosexual passion to steamy lesbian and gay encounters, every flavor of forbidden ecstasy awaits.
Here, rules are shattered.
Hearts betray reason. Characters surrender to the raw, uncontrollable urge to touch what they shouldn’t, step-fathers, step-mothers, blood-bound temptations, and every wicked variation in between.
This is not gentle romance. This is wild, sinful, unapologetic lust wrapped in love. A dance on the razor’s edge between control and chaos, guilt and surrender.
Between the crushing weight of sin and the sweet sting of redemption, these lovers become entangled in secrets, temptation, and pleasure so intense it borders on madness.
Because sometimes the most dangerous thing isn’t the sin itself…
The Marichat dynamic always felt like the realest version of their connection to me. It’s stripped of the superheroics and the celebrity crush, just two people who can be awkward and genuine with each other. Fics that lean into sin often use that rawness to explore guilt in a way the other squares can’t. Ladybug might feel guilty about endangering civilians, but Marinette, in that alley with Chat, feels guilty for wanting something just for herself, for indulging a fantasy with the ‘wrong’ boy. The emotional conflict isn’t just about cheating on Adrien; it’s about Marinette betraying her own idealized self-image.
That self-betrayal gets super messy when the sin is physical. A stolen kiss isn’t just a kiss; it’s Marinette actively choosing to step outside the neat, controlled future she’s mapped out. The aftermath in good stories isn’t just ‘oh no, what have I done,’ but a deep unraveling. Can she even look at Adrien the same way now that she knows what it feels like to let go with someone else? The tension comes from her trying to stuff the genie back in the bottle, to rationalize the Chat-shaped crack in her perfect world, and often failing spectacularly.
Weirdly enough, I don't go for the 'love at first sight' angle when the masks are off; the fics that stick with me are the ones where they fight first. Not physically, but that initial clash where he's a showboating flirt and she's defensive and sharp, their whole dynamic is built on mutual annoyance that's secretly fascination. That friction is the good stuff. The best trope, for my money, is the 'accidental vulnerability' moment—maybe Chat catches Marinette crying over something unrelated and his entire persona drops, or she sees him exhausted after a fight and offers him a croissant without even thinking. It's not grand; it's small, human, and it cracks the shell.
I also have a soft spot for the identity shenanigans, obviously, but not the big reveal. I mean the little almost-moments that drive you crazy, where one of them says something suspiciously specific or uses a turn of phrase only the other persona would know, and they both just brush it off. The tension of them being so close to figuring it out, yet so stubbornly blind, is a special kind of torture that I absolutely love reading.
The funny thing about writing tension for Shadow and Maria is remembering they have almost no shared canon time together. Their entire emotional history is a 'before' and an 'after.' So much of the potential isn't in what they say, but in the absence. I think the most effective fics exploit Shadow’s fundamental nature as a character built for a purpose. His loyalty to Maria is the core programming, but what happens when that programming encounters a living, breathing, changed version of her, or just the ghost of her memory? The tension isn't just romantic 'will they/won't they.' It's existential.
You can twist the scenario a few ways. Is it a reunion story where Maria is somehow alive? The tension there is in dissonance—Shadow’s static, perfect memory of a sickly child versus a complex adult he feels obligated to protect but doesn't truly know. Every interaction is him measuring the reality against the ideal. Does she resent being his reason for being? Does he feel betrayed if she’s moved on from Project ARK? That’s rich ground.
Or, more interesting to me, are the stories that keep Maria purely as a memory, a ghost in the machinery. The tension becomes internal and atmospheric. Maybe Shadow hears a laugh that sounds like hers in a crowded station, or catches a glimpse of blonde hair that’s just the wrong shade. The fic becomes about his obsession, his refusal to let the past be past, and how that isolates him from the present. The emotional stakes are his own sanity and peace. The 'relationship' is with a phantom, and every step toward letting go feels like a betrayal. That kind of quiet, desperate tension can be far more potent than any dramatic argument.
