Honestly, a lot of fics mess this up by making them either too soft or just generic rivals. The key is that their connection is cerebral and aesthetic, not emotional in a standard way. Fyodor wouldn't pine; he'd analyze. Nikolai wouldn't confess feelings; he'd stage an elaborate spectacle meant to provoke a specific, calculated reaction from Fyodor alone.
Forget fluff. Think about the details Fyodor would notice—the precise drape of Nikolai's coat, a minor shift in his vocal cadence—and treat those observations as data points in his grand design. Nikolai, in turn, is constantly testing the boundaries of Fyodor's control and ideology, trying to force a crack in that perfect, composed facade. The authenticity comes from keeping them both terrifyingly competent and profoundly alien to each other, yet uniquely understood in that alienation.
Keep their voices distinct. Nikolai's prose should feel expansive, whimsical, and layered with metaphor, even in his internal monologue. Fyodor's should be precise, clipped, and ruthlessly logical. When their perspectives alternate, the shift in rhythm itself tells the story of their disconnect. Their interactions are less about physical action and more about the space between their words, the things left unsaid because they're already known. The relationship grows from that silent, mutual comprehension of the other's destructive potential.
Nikolai and Fyodor's dynamic in 'Bungo Stray Dogs' is fascinating because it's built on such extreme intellectual and philosophical opposition. The core tension isn't just about power plays; it's about two wildly different modes of transcending humanity. Nikolai embraces theatrical chaos as a path to freedom, while Fyodor seeks a cold, calculated purity through sin and salvation. The most authentic writing captures that their conflict is a form of intimate conversation. They're not just enemies; they're each other's perfect audience and most profound critic.
To get it right, I think you have to lean into the unsettling respect. Their dialogue shouldn't devolve into shouting matches. It's more like a chess game played with personal philosophies. A misplaced moment of genuine concern from Fyodor, or a rare, unperformative moment of stillness from Nikolai, can speak volumes. The relationship thrives in the ambiguity—is it obsession, recognition, or a twisted kind of devotion? Let that ambiguity breathe instead of forcing a clear label on it.

And the sweetest little angel couldn't keep her eyes off the devil.

The strong, powerful, and ruthless Nikolai Costello ruled over the kingdom of the dark world he was born into, what he wasn’t supposed to do is to fall in love with someone so different from his world while he was betrothed to someone else. He was never supposed to fall in love with someone as sweet and innocent as Evangeline Bolton.
Evangeline Bolton has spent her entire life in a single room locked away from the world. Her world was filled with books and movies as it was her window to the outside world. From a very young age, she was told that the world out there was filled with big bad wolves who were ready to tear her apart if she walked out.
But what happens when one day, Evangeline's parents get brutally murdered leaving her alone at the mercy of Nikolai “The Devil” Costello, the most feared man in the entire country?
They say nuns are off-limits.
I call that a challenge.
They say obsession is a sin.
I stopped counting sins when blood became my business.
She says I’m a sinner. She’s not wrong.
But when I have her whispering confessions against my skin that would make Lucifer himself blush, what does that make her?
A firecracker wrapped in a habit. All rosaries and rebellion, thinking she can drive me away with Scripture and that ice-cold stare. Amusing. Her holy water won't wash away what I do to those round tits.
She's not a bride of Christ yet. And the harder she prays for salvation, the more determined I am to show her what real worship feels like.
They say God answers all prayers.
But in my city, prayers come to me first.
Her vows or my empire. Heaven or my hell.
The choice was never really hers to make.
God may forgive me, but she won’t.
PART 1 - NIKOLAI AND NOVA: Nikolai is the youngest brother of Kai and Konstantin Volkov. Since his torture and kidnapping, he's become a cold, distant shell of the man he used to be, making a name for himself as a Ripper. The only light in his life is Nova Lorelei, the mate he rejected while he was under the control of a demonic entity. But even as he yearns for her, he knows she's better off without him in her life. So he keeps to the shadows and watches over her.
This worked out fine until he saw his mate being abused by another.
Will Nikolai be able to keep his distance from Nova, or is the Mate Bond stronger than his willpower?
-----
PART 2 - DIMITRI AND ARYA:
Wracked with guilt at nearly killing his human mate four years ago, Dimitri Volkov let Arya go so she could live a normal life. He didn't feel worthy of a mate or happiness after almost killing her and betraying his entire pack, so he settled to living a life filled with blood and pain as his brother and Alpha's Lead Enforcer. A trip to Brooklyn changes everything for him when he finds his way onto Brooklyn Bridge only to see his mate about to commit suicide.
He saves her again, but the Mate Bond Sighting clicks, and the traitorous Gamma finds himself in quite the position: reject Arya or accept what Fate has given him?

" You wish it was you screaming my name, don't you? " He asked while locking me in place with his gaze.
“ I don’t know what you're talking about.” I defended.
I clutched the wall behind me as he moved closer with his hand on the door above my head. Our bodies were inches apart and it was getting harder to concentrate because of his bare chest that was muscular and covered with ink.
" Tell me principessa, do you think of me when you trail your fingers down your stomach and between your thighs? Do you think of me as you work yourself trying to reach the brick of euphoria? Do you imagine it's my fingers as you work faster to ease the ache between your thighs? Do you scream my name as your walls clench around your digits and your eyes roll to the back of your head when you ? "
" you! " I screamed, ignoring the loud thumping of my heart against my chest.
" You see, I know girls like you. You've been sheltered all your life and you crave some rebellion. Tattoos, muscular, bad boy, and an Italian accent are your undoing, right? That's all it takes to have you drooling and fawning. I'm I right, principessa? "
“ You know nothing about me! " I screamed and he chuckled.
“ Oh, but I do. I can smell your arousal begging me to pin you to this wall and show just how much I can make your weep for me. " He whispered in my ear.
She's fire and he's ice. Sicily holds many secrets but is Brianna ready for the ones Nikolai has to offer? A life of crime, gunfire, and passion is not what she signed up for. Can she handle the enigma that is Nikolai?
The whole world has changed. In the year 2054, the human race is no longer the largest population on earth. The global invasion of a new yet not quite new species has forced the remaining people to hide in fear. Just like the other war survivors, Avery Pierce tries to escape death by hiding from them. But when she reaches seventeen, her life is doomed. She is sold as a slave to an old powerful family. Living in a beautiful mansion, she has to serve her owner, the mistress of the house. Will she be treated as a mere slave or maybe something more?
I was always different from my brothers; always more sensitive and perceptive. I never knew if this was a gift from the Goddess or not, but my brother, Alpha Kai, used my sixth sense to his advantage and that's what helped raise our pack to infamy.
But in the end, it would be that sixth sense which led to my demise - dead before I could even face my mate and his betrayal. My soft heart led to my death, and my trusting nature helped the enemy get ahead with their plans.
So here I am, sifting through my memories in the Other and watching my family as they continue to live their lives without me.
All the while wishing I could be there with them.

This is a companion novel to the Bratva Wolves Novels and is not a standalone. Do not read this book if you have not read The Bratva Wolves Collection first.
It's such an interesting dynamic to dig into, because on the surface 'Dosvidaniya' is this grandiose theater kid and Fyodor is the quiet, calculating one. But I've read fics where that gets completely turned around, and that's where the real emotional meat is. Like, what if Nikolai's chaos is just a cover for a deep, desperate need for structure, and Fyodor's cold logic is actually fueled by a kind of obsessive, possessive passion? The best fics I've found don't just make them fuck (though that's fun too), they explore the horror of being truly seen by someone who understands your ugliest compulsions.
One author wrote a piece where Nikolai tries to 'free' Fyodor from his own mind by staging increasingly elaborate 'escapes,' and Fyodor just watches, amused and pitying, because he knows Nikolai is the one in the cage of his own performance. The conflict wasn't about good vs. evil, but about two utterly incompatible philosophies of existence slamming into each other, wrapped up in this unbearably intimate mutual obsession. That story left me staring at the ceiling for a good twenty minutes. The emotional core often feels less like romance and more like a doomed, beautiful collision.
I think the complexity comes from the fact that neither of them is emotionally available in a conventional way, so their connection has to be expressed through these bizarre, high-stakes games. It's a puzzle where love and annihilation are the same piece.
