This thread is awesome. I've added like six of these to my 'to-read' list. I never realized how many stories tap into that same feeling of discovery and growth. Makes you appreciate the structure, even when the settings are worlds apart.
For a military fantasy take, 'The Thousand Names' by Django Wexler. The coming-of-age arc belongs to Winter Ihernglass, a woman disguised as a man in a colonial army. As a mysterious new colonel arrives with a secret mission involving magical artifacts, Winter rises through the ranks.
Her growth from a terrified runaway to a confident leader, mastering both military tactics and latent magical abilities she never knew she had, is fantastic. The regiment becomes her found family. It’s grittier and more politically complex, but the 'ordinary person discovers hidden power and a larger magical war' skeleton is there, just on a battlefield instead of a castle.

She was never meant to survive their world.
Now she’s the only one who can burn it down.
Lyra thought she was just a girl with strange dreams and a birthmark that shimmered beneath moonlight. But when a celestial event rips her from Earth and drops her into the brutal halls of the Academy of the Ascendant, she discovers a deadly truth: she’s the lost heir of a realm that erased her bloodline—and she’s carrying the forbidden magic that could unravel it all.
The Academy is ruled by power and hierarchy. The weak are crushed. The strong ascend. And the Triad—three elite heirs born of elemental fire, storm, and air—will do anything to break her. Until they realize she’s more powerful than all of them.
Mocked. Hunted. Desired.
As Lyra unlocks the four elemental affinities no student should possess, she becomes the center of a prophecy that the Council has killed to keep buried. But it’s the fifth element—the forbidden Void—that marks her for something more.
Survival means mastering her magic.
Love could cost her everything.
And rebellion might just start with a kiss.
Perfect for fans of Zodiac Academy, Throne of Glass, and The Cruel Prince, Marked by Starlight is the explosive first book in a dark fantasy romance series filled with elemental magic, enemies-to-lovers heat, and a heroine who refuses to bow.
Every story has a beginning, some good, some bad, mine has never been a happy one, no matter who, or how I tell it, nobody will believe me.
I can't rely on the people in my life, My parents ignore me, or are cruel to me, my friends are unreliable, and aren't trustworthy either.
So what happens when I turn 16 years old, and run away from my problems to another world, only to find myself in the same magical world I played make belief in as a kid?
With heartbreak at every turn, and a possible new relationship on the horizon, what could possibly go wrong in this world that hasn't happened to me on Earth?!
Maeve Edgar's life plan was simple: survive until Selection Day, then disappear forever. As the pack's favorite scapegoat, she's spent years perfecting the art of being invisible. But when she gets kidnapped and dumped in front of the most dangerous prince in the kingdom, invisible stops being an option.
Prince Riven is everything the rumors say - cold, lethal, and absolutely not interested in playing nice. So why does he choose her for some mysterious academy that nobody's ever heard of? And why does being near him feel like remembering something she never knew she'd forgotten?
Turns out the Blood Moon Academy is where pack heirs compete in brutal trials to earn a place in the Royal Court. Now she's stuck fighting alongside the same spoiled brats who used to torment her, trying to prove she belongs somewhere she was never supposed to be.
The connection between them grows stronger with every moment they're in the same room. It's the kind of bond wolves used to have before the Great War - the kind everyone says is just a myth now.
But people are asking questions about her family, her past, her dreams of faces she's never seen. The wrong kind of people. And some of them seem very interested in making sure she doesn't get the answers she's looking for.
The Academy was supposed to be about earning her place in the world. Turns out it might be about remembering who she used to be.
sips metaphorical tea This is a fascinating discussion. I'm just sitting here nodding along and adding books to my 'to-read' list based on everyone's points. Carry on.
Sometimes the theme is handled through the lens of historical trauma and memory. 'The Daevabad Trilogy,' again, does this with Ali's arc. As a prince and a zealot, his coming-of-age is a painful education in the complexities of history, justice, and his own privilege.
He begins with a rigid, black-and-white view of right and wrong, shaped by a narrow interpretation of faith and history. The fantasy conflict—centered on genies, blood magic, and a divided city—forces him to see the grey, to understand how narratives are weaponized, and to question the foundations of his own beliefs. Growing up, for him, means abandoning ideological purity for nuanced, difficult compassion.
The setting itself often acts as a character in the maturation process. A labyrinthine city teaches street smarts and political maneuvering; a harsh wilderness teaches survival and self-reliance. The protagonist doesn't just pass through these places—they are shaped by them, absorbing the values and flaws of the environment. Their coming-of-age is literally a journey through a symbolic landscape, and their final understanding of that landscape marks their transition into adulthood within that world.
