River blinks, and then he laughs, the sound rich and disbelieving.
“Impossible,” he scoffs, shaking his head. “As always, you’re mistaken, Maerilee. I’m your One. Not some—” he gestures vaguely toward the door, “—servant.”
I bristle at his dismissal of Akin, my temper flaring again. “You don’t know that. You can’t just decide you’re my One because it’s convenient for you.”
He pushes off the wall, stepping closer, and I can see the determination in his eyes.
