LOGINLESLIE’S POV
“Have you ever thought about putting your resume into Jobsco, you don’t even have to apply, you just give them your CV, and they’d apply for you.”
“No.” I answered, not even bothering to look up from the T.V at the frown that was obviously formed on Rochelle’s face.
“Leslie, you have to do something – you can’t just sit in my couch all day eating pizza and watching stupid rom-coms –”
“Hey!” I interrupted, feeling hurt. “They’re not stupid, this is a perfectly romantic movie where men don’t cheat, they get married and live happily ever – see! You’ve just made me miss their kissing scene. Did you see the look on his face when he – Rochelle!” I called out as she switched off the TV.
“Now that I have your attention, you can’t keep moping away your life just because your ex-husband is a stupid piss of … Leslie, it’s been seven months!”
“I know!” I wailed. Even after seven months, tears still threatened to fill my eyes at the thought of Jeffrey.
“Leslie,” Rochelle called, her voice gentling. “Leslie look at me,” she’d walked up to stoop in front of where I sat, and now, she pinched my chin, tilting it upwards.
“You’re a beautiful, strong, intelligent woman with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. I’ll be damned if I let you waste away because of Jeffrey.”
I shook my head. “I’m not beautiful, I’m not Carla.”
“Oh for Pete’s sake!” Rochelle threw up her hands in exasperation, then she closed her eyes and let out an audible breath. “Okay, let’s do it this way. Come with me. Helix.co extended an invite to me, for their tenth anniversary – well, since I decorated for them, they decided to send an invite. I can bring a plus one, so you’re coming with me –”
“Nope!” I said, reaching for the remote. Helix was the same company Jeffrey had been trying to get a deal with. I wasn’t interested.
“I wasn’t asking!” Rochelle commanded. “You’re either coming with me, or you’re leaving my house. And look, it’s not just the Minnesota branch, I heard the who is who would be flying in – I think it’s like Minnesota is hosting, so you better dress well and be on your best behavior.”
I rolled my eyes. “Must you be such a pain in the –”
The doorbell rang then, interrupting me and I sprinted to open it. Anything was welcome distraction to Roch’s forcing me to face my sorry reality.
I took a step back as I opened it, staring dazedly at the figure that stood in front of me. Already, tears had filled my eyes again.
Couldn’t the universe let me catch a break.
“Hi Leslie,” Jeffrey said in that deep voice of his. He was cradling a baby that looked a week old. “Can I come in?”
“No!” Thankfully, it was Rochelle that answered. His eyes flashed at her, then they focused on me.
“This is turning out a bit more awkward than I thought it would, but can you please come home?”
Seven months. Seven months of fantasizing this very scene, that Jeffrey would come to beg for my forgiveness, tell me he had been a stupid fool, and I was really the love of his life, but now, that it was happening, I was surprised at the calm that descended on me.
“No,” I answered calmly. “Jeffrey, we’re divorced remember?”
He nodded, shifting from foot to foot. He wasn’t even holding the baby properly, and the poor thing had started crying from discomfort.
“Who’s baby is this even?” I asked, taking the baby from him. A quick check, and I realized she – it was a she – had filled her diaper.
I sighed, carrying her over to the center table. There was nothing much I could do, but I quickly took off the soiled diaper, cleaned her up with wet wipes, and dressed her back.
“You’re good with babies,” Jeffrey said startling me.
Of course I was. I had worked as a nanny for several years, through my college degree. It was how Jeffrey and I met in the first place. I had been babysitting his cousin’s child.
“Why are you here Jeffrey, and who’s child is this?” I asked instead. It was just the two of us, Rochelle had slipped out to give us some privacy.
“It’s Barbie’s – and mine.” He hesitated. “Odd, but I thought I couldn’t have children, the doctors said I had a sperm count issue.”
Another thing he’d kept from me. I swallowed, letting that slide. “Who the heck is Barbie?”
“The escort you –” he coughed a bit. “The escort that dressed up as Carla. She died giving birth, and now I’m stuck with the child.”
So he hadn’t missed me, he just needed me to take care of the child he’d gotten cheating on me. I shouldn’t be surprised at this stage, but it still hurt.
“Jeffrey can you even hear yourself –”
He raised his hands, palm up. “I know! I know it sounds crazy, but a lot is happening right now. Carla has reconciled with her birth family, and she no longer answers Homer. She’s officially no more my sister. We started seeing each other last month, and we just want to go away to some place new and start afresh, but Carla insisted we’re not going with this child. So it’s either you adopt the baby, or she’s ending up in an orphanage.”
I had to laugh at his long rant. “Jeffrey you must be highly delusional to think I’d step in to smooth the way for you and the woman you cheated on me with –”
“Carla didn’t cheat though,” he interjected. “None of this is her fault”
“And do you think I care?” I shouted. “Take your little bastard out of my friends house and go sort your problems yourself, or I’m calling the cops, and filling a restraining order.”
He had the audacity to look hurt. He took a step backwards, opening his mouth to say something, but the baby had already started crying again.
“She’s hungry,” I said without even turning around. “What formula did you bring with you?”
“I’ll pay you!” Jeffrey said, ignoring my question about formula. “You’re a nanny, so then do your job. Take care of this baby for me. I’d thought you had missed me, that you’ll want a little piece of me –”
I laughed. “You must be delusional –”
“Ten thousand dollars. I’ll give you ten thousand dollars every six months, baby food expenses excluded. Please, just take her. There’s really no space for her with I and Carla, and I don’t think you’d want her to grow up unloved…” he let his voice trail away.
He was twisting the knife now. Jeffrey knew I grew up with my grandparents who never passed up the opportunity to let me know I was a burden on them.
I sighed, picking up the baby, she immediately folded into my arms, nibbling on my arm as she quietened down. “She’s hungry,” I whispered through the sheen of tears that already filled my eyes.
“Ten thousand dollars is a lot of money,” Jeffrey answered, again, ignoring my talk about feeding. “You don’t have to make up your mind today, just keep the baby with you this night, see if you don’t lose your heart to her.”
I was a fool.
A bloody, stupid, little fool, but I couldn’t hand the baby nestled in my arms to a father that didn’t want her.
I remained silent as he walked away, then I called Foodsie and ordered for baby formula to be delivered to the house.
LESLIE ’S POV Morgan was gripped by an intense apprehension as soon as he saw that Max was approaching, and I sneered at him because I was aware of what could happen if Max found out that he could have been involved in almost killing me.“Why is he injured?” Max asked as soon as he walked up to us, but no other person was willing to speak; they all turned to me while Daston was still grunting and panting.“I did it; it was the only way I could get him to confess.” Max sighed. At first he was shocked, but when he looked at the prisoner, he realized that he deserved whatever I did to him.“You almost killed my Mistress!” He grabbed Daston by his neck and almost strangled him to death if I didn’t give him a sign to let him live.Daston gasped and began to cough. I was certain that it was one of the most unfortunate days of his life, if not the worst.I wanted him to live because he could be proof that I was right about Morgan being untrustworthy, and that could be my only chance at pro
LESLIE ’S POV The silence looked like it was giving Morgan so much discomfort, but he was afraid to leave because he seemed to have an idea of what I was about to ask.“Daston? I am well aware that you must have gotten held from someone in this Kingdom, someone who is probably close to the mansion. Tell us, who helped you get into the hall on the night of the wedding?” I turned to face Morgan as soon as I was done with my question, and I could see that his nervousness had increased. But I also knew that Daston was tough, and he was definitely going to try to cover up the person who had helped him into the Kingdom, and into the hall that fateful night. “Everyone is waiting for you to speak, Daston. We don’t have all day.”“No one…” Daston gave a quick and short response without even looking at me. “I knew you were going to say that.” I chuckled softly, and then I looked at the weapons Kara wielded. The two of them had very sharp edges, but I preferred the shorter one. It had the ex
LESLIE ’S POV Kara kept her smile, but I could see that she was forcing it to remain on her face while I moved toward her.“I can leave if you want me to, Mistress Leslie .”“No, Kara. Stay…” I gestured with both hands, causing her to sigh in relief.“I am glad that you want me to stay.” She smiled genuinely, and I nodded.“I don’t think I need protection, Kara. But what I think I need is a friend, someone to talk to. Can you be my friend?”Kara chuckled. “Of course! I would love to!” She nodded. “The King told me about the attempt to kill you.” She broke the silence between us, but I said nothing.“I want to show you something.” She turned to the King, and I did the same. I saw the King nod, and I realized that the two of them had something to show me.“What is it?” I directed my question to the king, and he pointed at Kara.“She will show you…” He said, and Kara started moving out of the room.“Go on, she will show you something.” Max urged, and I followed Kara at once.Kara move
LESLIE ’S POV I was not prepared for what had become the outcome of the meeting with the leaders, but it seemed like it was the only thing that could save me from being thorn apart by Lord Magnus and his cohorts. “I am sorry that you had to witness that, Leslie . I should have let you get prepared for the challenge ahead.” Max was so sweet with his apology, and that made me smile just like him.“Don’t worry about me, I am tougher than you think.” “I am sure of that. That’s why I stood my ground, and I can assure that no one is going to do anything to you. You are mine, and mine alone.” I chuckled while were strode along the hallway, and I thought that we were headed to the room until he moved toward the throne room. “There is someone I want you to meet, Leslie .” He said, increasing the pace of his steps while I slowed down.“Who is that?” I asked with a whisper, not certain that I was ready for any surprises. “Don’t worry. It’s not someone that you are not willing to see.” He
CHAPTER SIXTY-EIGHT LESLIE ’S POV There was silence in the hall, but I could still hear the sound of my heart beating as though it was racing like a car. All eyes were on me, staring as though I was the enemy that they had been hoping to see. I turned to face Max since he was the only one who wasn’t looking at me like I had snatched him away from his rightful bride, and he assured me that everything was going to be okay with the smile that appeared on his face.“Why is no one saying anything?” Lord Magnus broke the silence, increasing the suspense that he already created.“I could see that he was enjoying what he was doing, and he wanted the other leaders to join him.“I am sure none of us wants to incur the wrath of Lord Alpheus upon this kingdom by letting the King fail to fulfil the promise his father made a very long time ago. I was present when the promise was made, and the King’s father will be restless wherever he is because his son failed to keep to the promise he made.”
LESLIE ’S POV It was very obvious that Asher had a reason why he wanted me not to go into the hall with the king, but he couldn’t get whatever he wanted.“Please, Leslie . Let’s go in…” Max pleaded when he saw that I was a bit reluctant to go in, but that wasn’t because of what his Manager said. I was only trying to be sure that I was ready to face them , especially the ones who thought that I wasn’t supposed to be the Wife seating on the throne with their King.“The leaders are waiting, Leslie . I know that you are upset, but shall we talk about this later?” Max was afraid that I was going to say no, but I nodded and he sighed in relief.Asher avoided my eyes, but I was going to speak to him privately later. It was only a matter of time before I exposed him.We went into the hall, and as soon as the leaders saw us coming, all of them stood up except for one person, Lord Magnus. He seemed to be more concerned about his comfort, and wasn’t worried about the disregard that he was giv

LESLIE’S POV“What? No! No no no!” Rochelle screamed, staring at me like I had grown horns. “I knew I shouldn’t have stepped out of the house when that man came, he’s nothing but bad luck!”She’d gone last minute shopping while Jeffrey had been around, and now, she was acting as though I had taken
