MAX CRANE

She had that deer-caught-in-the-headlights look as she raised her gaze to mine. Her lips puckered into a pout, and a soft, mewing sound escaped her lips.

I ran a hand through my head – probably for the hundredth time. It had been long since any woman sparked my interest to this extent, but now, her seeming oblivion to who I was irked.

“I’ll ask you for the last time, who are you?”

Those ocean-blue eyes widened again, giving her a sort of pixie look. Everything about her looked pixie, from the jet black hair that fell in rivulets down to her narrow waist to the heart shaped face framed by dark, sooty lashes, and dominated by her wide eyes, and cupid bow lips I could spend forever tasting.

It was getting more and more obvious she wasn’t one of those million-dollar escorts paid to put up an act, she was the aunt of a baby somewhere everyone was saying was mine.

The fact that she’d taken away my distraction, the only thing that took my mind off what today was should really annoy me, again, it was surprising that I wasn’t so annoyed.

Having a new branch like the Minnesota host our tenth anniversary had been Logan’s idea. He wanted the party to be so far away, I wouldn’t have to show up, he was the only one that knew what today meant to me.

And then the damn stakeholders had called and started yapping stupid stuff about legacy and demanding I attend.

Being in that hall had made every fiber in me go cold. I wanted nothing more than to drink myself into oblivion – with some female company of course – and then wake up the next day like 12 of May never existed in my calendar. And then she’d shown up.

She was whimpering now, like a kitten without claws, those large blue eyes staring up at me like I was the big, bad, wolf from her childhood bedtime stories. I let out a breath as I let her go.

“What’s your name?” I tried more gently this time, shutting the door with the back of my leg and leaning against it.

“Leslie Homer,” she breathed.

Homer…. Minnesota branch had been slammed with a law suit from a Jeffrey Homer. “Homer, as in Jeffrey Homer?”

She nodded, looking guilty. “Okay, I’m not exactly Barbie’s sister. She cheated with my husband – ex-husband, Jeffrey, and now she’s dead, they’re making me take custody of the child. I figured Jeffrey wasn’t the only one she was messing with, followed a trail of pictures, and I found you.”

“So you’ll want a DNA test? I’ll schedule it for tomorrow. If the child is mine, you can meet with my secretary to reimburse you for your efforts, if not – well, I can write you a tidy check to help you find the father –”

“Hold up hold up, wait!” She was already saying before I finished speaking. The flash of protective fierceness was back in her eyes. “You don’t think I’m going to hand over that child to you, after what I’ve just witnessed this night. It’s very obvious you are unfit to raise a child! I really hope you are not the father, cause if you are, I’ll fight you in court with the last drop of my blood, you are not taking her.”

Blood wasn’t the weapon used in court cases, it was money, a disgusting amount of raw dirty cash, and a room full of lawyers. Judging from her obvious thrift-store-bought outfit, she has none of those yet I admired her spirit.

“What’s your deal though? I had to ask. “Are you putting on a show so I’ll offer you more money? I already said I’ll pay for your troubles so far –”

She reached out a hand and slapped me, surprise flashing more in her eyes as her hand connected with my jaw. “ How dare you reduce the fate of an innocent baby to – mere money?”

I wasn’t prepared for the surge of anger that filled me, nor for how her disdain was beginning to rankle.

I grabbed the hand she’d  used to hit me, fighting the urge to squeeze till she was chastised. Instead, I brought it up to my lips and kissed her knuckles. Her pupils dilated as I whispered. “Next time you touch me without consent Mom Cheri, I’m going to be doing a little touching of my own.”

She yanked her hand, moving backwards as though I’d  scalded her. “I’m just making sure that poor baby doesn’t end up with you –”

“Well so what do you want? If you don’t like my ‘mere money’ ways, then move in with her. I’ll pay you enough to take care of her.”

Other girls would jump at the offer, she only looked more exasperated. “What is it with you men thinking I’ll happily uproot my life and comes play nanny for you? Have you imagined I may want my own life, to get married and take care of my own children?”

“Then marry me.”

Her eyes widened, and even I was equally surprised, but as soon as I said it, it started to make sense.

Stakeholders had been hounding me without end on how I should get married so people would view Helix Co with more respectability, the hard, concrete, cash evidence of our goodwill not withstanding. Leslie, was exactly the kind of girl my Nan would have wanted me to marry, and a marriage contract easily solved the issue of the child. It was not as though I was holding out to fall in love with someone or any such nonsense. If I was going to get married, I might as well do it now.

I straightened and took a step towards her as she took several steps backwards. “It would be a marriage in paper, and appearances alone – we’d  share each other’s  beds of course, but we don’t have to be exclusive. You’ll be placed on a monthly allowance of half a million.”

Her eyes flared, and I half expected her to go on a long rant about reducing the sanctity of marriage to a money transaction, instead she asked. “What if the child is not yours?”

“The contract is only for if the child is mine. We’d run the DNA test tomorrow, I’m sure you’ll want some time to think about it, so I’m giving you till the week is up, till then, I’ll allow you to continue keeping the baby.”

She stared at me like she was going to cry, then she turned and fled the room.

The marriage offer was probably a tad bit impulsive. I had the vague feeling I would spend the rest of the marriage regretting it.

  • A BABY FOR THE BILLIONAIRE    Chapter 72

LESLIE ’S POV Morgan was gripped by an intense apprehension as soon as he saw that Max was approaching, and I sneered at him because I was aware of what could happen if Max found out that he could have been involved in almost killing me.“Why is he injured?” Max asked as soon as he walked up to us, but no other person was willing to speak; they all turned to me while Daston was still grunting and panting.“I did it; it was the only way I could get him to confess.” Max sighed. At first he was shocked, but when he looked at the prisoner, he realized that he deserved whatever I did to him.“You almost killed my Mistress!” He grabbed Daston by his neck and almost strangled him to death if I didn’t give him a sign to let him live.Daston gasped and began to cough. I was certain that it was one of the most unfortunate days of his life, if not the worst.I wanted him to live because he could be proof that I was right about Morgan being untrustworthy, and that could be my only chance at pro

  • A BABY FOR THE BILLIONAIRE    Chapter 71

LESLIE ’S POV The silence looked like it was giving Morgan so much discomfort, but he was afraid to leave because he seemed to have an idea of what I was about to ask.“Daston? I am well aware that you must have gotten held from someone in this Kingdom, someone who is probably close to the mansion. Tell us, who helped you get into the hall on the night of the wedding?” I turned to face Morgan as soon as I was done with my question, and I could see that his nervousness had increased. But I also knew that Daston was tough, and he was definitely going to try to cover up the person who had helped him into the Kingdom, and into the hall that fateful night. “Everyone is waiting for you to speak, Daston. We don’t have all day.”“No one…” Daston gave a quick and short response without even looking at me. “I knew you were going to say that.” I chuckled softly, and then I looked at the weapons Kara wielded. The two of them had very sharp edges, but I preferred the shorter one. It had the ex

LESLIE ’S POV Kara kept her smile, but I could see that she was forcing it to remain on her face while I moved toward her.“I can leave if you want me to, Mistress Leslie .”“No, Kara. Stay…” I gestured with both hands, causing her to sigh in relief.“I am glad that you want me to stay.” She smiled genuinely, and I nodded.“I don’t think I need protection, Kara. But what I think I need is a friend, someone to talk to. Can you be my friend?”Kara chuckled. “Of course! I would love to!” She nodded. “The King told me about the attempt to kill you.” She broke the silence between us, but I said nothing.“I want to show you something.” She turned to the King, and I did the same. I saw the King nod, and I realized that the two of them had something to show me.“What is it?” I directed my question to the king, and he pointed at Kara.“She will show you…” He said, and Kara started moving out of the room.“Go on, she will show you something.” Max urged, and I followed Kara at once.Kara move

  • A BABY FOR THE BILLIONAIRE    Chapter 69

LESLIE ’S POV I was not prepared for what had become the outcome of the meeting with the leaders, but it seemed like it was the only thing that could save me from being thorn apart by Lord Magnus and his cohorts. “I am sorry that you had to witness that, Leslie . I should have let you get prepared for the challenge ahead.” Max was so sweet with his apology, and that made me smile just like him.“Don’t worry about me, I am tougher than you think.” “I am sure of that. That’s why I stood my ground, and I can assure that no one is going to do anything to you. You are mine, and mine alone.” I chuckled while were strode along the hallway, and I thought that we were headed to the room until he moved toward the throne room. “There is someone I want you to meet, Leslie .” He said, increasing the pace of his steps while I slowed down.“Who is that?” I asked with a whisper, not certain that I was ready for any surprises. “Don’t worry. It’s not someone that you are not willing to see.” He

  • A BABY FOR THE BILLIONAIRE    Chapter 68

CHAPTER SIXTY-EIGHT LESLIE ’S POV There was silence in the hall, but I could still hear the sound of my heart beating as though it was racing like a car. All eyes were on me, staring as though I was the enemy that they had been hoping to see. I turned to face Max since he was the only one who wasn’t looking at me like I had snatched him away from his rightful bride, and he assured me that everything was going to be okay with the smile that appeared on his face.“Why is no one saying anything?” Lord Magnus broke the silence, increasing the suspense that he already created.“I could see that he was enjoying what he was doing, and he wanted the other leaders to join him.“I am sure none of us wants to incur the wrath of Lord Alpheus upon this kingdom by letting the King fail to fulfil the promise his father made a very long time ago. I was present when the promise was made, and the King’s father will be restless wherever he is because his son failed to keep to the promise he made.”

  • A BABY FOR THE BILLIONAIRE    Chapter 67

LESLIE ’S POV It was very obvious that Asher had a reason why he wanted me not to go into the hall with the king, but he couldn’t get whatever he wanted.“Please, Leslie . Let’s go in…” Max pleaded when he saw that I was a bit reluctant to go in, but that wasn’t because of what his Manager said. I was only trying to be sure that I was ready to face them , especially the ones who thought that I wasn’t supposed to be the Wife seating on the throne with their King.“The leaders are waiting, Leslie . I know that you are upset, but shall we talk about this later?” Max was afraid that I was going to say no, but I nodded and he sighed in relief.Asher avoided my eyes, but I was going to speak to him privately later. It was only a matter of time before I exposed him.We went into the hall, and as soon as the leaders saw us coming, all of them stood up except for one person, Lord Magnus. He seemed to be more concerned about his comfort, and wasn’t worried about the disregard that he was giv
