(KAIRA'S POV)

I would have never made it to the dining room if not for the kind lady in a uniform. She helped lead me after seeing me go back and forth in a large hallway at least twice.

It's a very big house (that doesn't quite fit it). Actually, it's a huge mansion and I have no idea how they expected me to find my way without some help.

When I walked into the kingly dining room with the large table of four in the center, I could tell they had been waiting for me. Mum stood up immediately and approached me with a warm, guilty smile on her face as I walked in.

"Heyy, we were beginning to get worried about you." She greeted softly.

"Hi." I darted a glance at Mum and Tom as I was led to an empty chair at the table, beside Mum and opposite 'you know who' whom I was intentionally avoiding eye contact with.

I was seated beside Mum, across from Slade. Tom sat at the head. The table was small enough for intimacy, but the space between us felt like miles.

I kept my head bent, staring at the beautiful embroidered placemats seated on the perfectly ironed white linens.

"Hey Kaira." Tom greeted cheerfully, almost like I was a child.

"I'm sorry, I'm late. I had some trouble finding here." My voice barely made it past a whisper but they heard me well enough.

"Oh, it's no problem at all." Tom said with a nervous chuckle.

"I knew it wouldn't be easy and that's why I was surprised when Slade said you wanted to find your way without his help."

My head shot up and I glanced at Slade for the first time since I got into the dining room. His blank eyes stared back expectantly and then his lips curved for a flash second.

I glared at him. He had been sent to get me and all he did was say those crushing words to me.

I looked away from him, not wanting to remember those hurtful words or even to think about the kiss (if I'm being honest, that's the main struggle in this dining room now).

"But I'm impressed." I was grateful to Tom for continuing the conversation and taking back my attention. "If you want to find your way on your own, then it means you want to adjust quickly. That's remarkable."

I glanced at Mum and she was smiling lightly at me.

"Y-yes. I-I want to know my way around." I found myself saying.

"Kaira has always been independent." Mum pitched in.

"That's easy to see." Tom added with a nod. "Her perfect academic record even with less of your presence is remarkable."

"Th-thank you." I said softly, avoiding gazes.

"Slade, you should meet Kaira for some tutoring sessions." Tom added. "Maybe that will help."

A heavy silence descended and the room felt smaller. I could not stop myself from glancing at Slade. Thankfully he wasn't looking at me. His gaze, now fiery, was fixated on his father. But Tom seemed more interested in his glass of water than his son's reaction.

"Slade is a brilliant child." Mum said, a genuinely adoring smile as she looked over at him.

"He is, but he spends a lot of his time on football. Perhaps if he focuses more on academics, then he could think better of his future." Tom said after setting down the glass of water. Then he turned to me, a grin on his face. "Kaira has other interests too, like the writing you speak of, Shanice. Yet she has an unbeaten academic record in school. Her results are always unbelievable to look at."

My cheeks were burning and from the corner of my eyes, I could tell that Slade's heavy gaze was on me and maybe that’s why I looked at him, again.

Sure enough, he was staring right back at me. So hard that I was forced to look away.

The attention felt suffocating and the silence longer than it actually was, so I was relieved when the door opened and the servers began placing the food on the table.

An amazing aroma wafted through the air and I wanted to sigh in response. What more to reduce the burning anxiety in me than food? Thankfully I wasn't the only one distracted by food; everyone started adjusting napkins, plates and cutleries. Then bowls started going around.

First, a plate of hot, golden brown bread, a plate of butter, a bowl of steaming spaghetti and meatballs, a plate of crusty delicious smelling potatoes, and finally a bowl of crispy stir-fried vegetables. There were other dishes on the table but I didn't dare to look; I was already overwhelmed.

It all looked delicious but it was too much for me. I am a big lover of food but I have never had access to so many options.

I reached for a plate and caught Slade starring. Again.

Don’t think about it! Don’t think about it!

But it was too late. I was already thinking about the kiss. My lips tingled and my stomach tightened. Again, I lost the stare contest by breaking away.

I carefully put some spaghetti and meatballs on my plate, took a bun bread, and that was enough for me.

Soon, the room was filled with sounds of cutlery and chewing. Everyone seemed to be eating normally but my fork felt heavy in my hand. It didn't stop me from eating though; the food was too delicious to lose against the tension in my veins.

It was so saucy and the meatballs? It felt like I was eating at a five-star restaurant until a loud throat clearing brought me back to the opulent dining room.

It was Tom. And he was wiping the sides of his mouth with a napkin, his eyes pinned at the end of the table—to Mum. She was smiling shyly at him as well.

I dropped my fork, feeling a weird sensation crawling up my back.

Slade hadn't looked up from his plate. He seemed to be enjoying the food even more than I was.

"I have an announcement to make, everyone." Tom announced, transferring his gaze from Mum to me and Slade.

I turned to Mum and our eyes only met for a split second before she broke it, bending down to fold her napkin.

My pulse spiked.

Yeah, something is definitely going on and I don't think I'll like it.

"Shanice and I have decided…." Tom began.

I stole a quick glance at Slade and he was still eating, so casually that I wondered if I was the only one getting this news for the first time.

"We'll be getting married tomorrow." Tom finished.

Tomorrow. The word hung in the air like smoke.

I turned to Slade. He wasn't eating anymore. His fork was frozen above his plate. His jaw was tight.

Then the sound of cutlery dropping loudly on a plate sliced through the dining room.

He looked up. His eyes met mine.

Then the mask was back.

But I had seen it.

So we're both just getting this news.

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The Strangest Reason.

(SLADE'S POV)The silence in the car was deafening. And I told myself it was for the best. Because one word and I would have gone back there to create permanent changes in the lives of those cursed bastards! My heart started racing so I had to take in a deep breath and remind myself that Makaira was okay, she was safe.Terrified of me after watching me be so violent but she's not in danger anymore. Hopefully she knows that.It boils my blood to think of what could have happened if I had not shown up on time.My fists tightened on the steering wheel. I stole a glance at Makaira. She was still in the same position she had been since the car started moving. Head against the window and eyes glued to it.Each time, I told myself that I would try hard not to look at her. But then again, I found myself helplessly losing.Besides, seeing her was like throwing a blanket of comfort over me even though she wasn't looking directly at me.The drive felt endless. Every second stretched into an eter

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    Corbin And Brent.

(KAIRA'S POV)I watched the car drive off, feeling like it was leaving with a huge chunk of my heart.I could still smell Slade around me and maybe that's why I didn't want to move. It helped me jog back, helped me replay the way his eyes looked sad, so sad that it was hard to believe that those eyes belonged to him.So I stood there for some seconds and then steadied my books with my knee, before walking out of the parking lot.I thought I would feel even better than I felt after he left. But my emotions had a decline. I had told him off, for the second time today. It felt like I was winning for once by getting to turn him down and oh it felt so good to tell him I didn't want his help. The same feeling I got when I told him in the lab that he caused everything. But then, just like the time before that, there was some kind of guttural feeling that came with it. My tummy hurt and I didn't want any more flashbacks."He couldn't even give a proper apology! Because he doesn't want to apol

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The Stand-Up.

( BACK TO KAIRA’S POV)“Of all the people on this earth to touch me,” her eyes were burning at me. “It had to be the help.”The words hurt me, because It fekt like she was making jabs at my mum. But I suppressed that and focused on my faults; I had walked in to her, without looking and now I had ruined her shirt.“I am terribly sorry, Shelly.” My hands grasped each other briefly before I started searching through my bag. “I have a napkin and we can go to the bathroom and—““Oh drop the act, you snake!” She snapped at me m.I froze, feeling all attention land fully on me, like it was not enough as it was. Shelly took a menacing step forward that made me move backwards in turn. “Tell me, do you think I’m a fool?” Her voice was low but very saucy, her eyes dug in to mine.“I know what you want!” She announced. “You’re having a terrible day in school and so you want me to have a bad day too.”I frowned at her. “Of course not. It was an accident.” “Oh shut up!” Her voice was suddenly lo

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The Perfectly Folded Note.

(SLADE’S POV)That was not the reaction I was expecting. Less than seconds of watching us kiss and and Makaira had stomped away, looking like she was disgusted by the entire act. Not sad. Irritated. And then it occurred to me, how much of a coward I was.Like evertime she made me feel anything warm or made me yearn in the tiniest way, I tried to break free. And that meant making sure that I got rid of any soft thoughts I had left her with… Again, Cowardly of me.But I dwelled in the bitter-sweetness of it. The bitterness that hurting her came with and the sweetness that I felt, knowing I gained a reaction from her, that I got her to look at me, to know me, that I made her feel something… even if it wasn’t nice.“What’s wrong?” Shelly’s sharp voice broke my thoughts. I had stopped kissing her and was looking after the stairs, even though I still couldn’t get a good view of Makaira. Just her fading foosteps.I adjusted the bow hanging on my neck. “I’m tired.” I said and I wanted to

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    For Two Weeks.

(MAKAIRA'S POV)The next two weeks were a blur of stolen moments and whispered promises.Slade took me to dinner at a fancy restaurant where I couldn't pronounce half the items on the menu. He laughed when I ordered chicken tenders anyway, and I fell a little more in love with the way his eyes crinkled at the corners. He took me to the movies, but we barely watched the film. His hand found mine in the dark, and we spent more time looking at each other than at the screen. He took me to the beach at sunset, and we walked barefoot along the shore, collecting shells and pretending we didn't notice the way the waves crept closer with each step."You're going to get your pants wet," I warned him, watching the water lap at his expensive loafers."Worth it." He squeezed my hand, pulling me closer. "For you, always worth it."I rolled my eyes, but I was smiling so hard my cheeks hurt.---But the best moments were the quiet ones. The mornings when he'd text me before I even woke up.Slade: Goo

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The First Time In Years

(MAKAIRA'S POV)I didn't sleep that night. Not a single wink.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Slade's face. The way he'd looked at me when he said those words. You're mine. The way his voice had cracked just slightly, like he was admitting something that scared him.I tossed and turned, clutching the teddy bear to my chest like it was some kind of anchor.Dream of me?What had possessed me to say that? I'd typed it before I could stop myself, my fingers moving on their own accord. And then I'd spent the next hour staring at my phone, waiting for a reply that never came.He said he'd dream of me.At least, I thought he did. He hadn't actually typed it. But he hadn't denied it either.I groaned, pressing my face into my pillow. This was insane. I barely knew him. He'd been cold and distant and sometimes downright mean. But then there were moments—fleeting, fragile moments—where I caught a glimpse of something else. Something tender. Something raw.And it made me want to know more.--

(KAIRA'S POV)Slade put me down immediately and draped his jacket over my shoulder.
