Rowan POV

Today’s practice was exhausting. The guys were underperforming, and as the captain, I had to be the one barking orders. "Pick up the pace! If you can't even handle basic layups, just get off the floor!" I yelled across the court.

Inside, I was losing my mind. I had been waiting for Matteo to show up, but he hadn't even arrived yet. If this was how a head coach was going to run things, showing up this late, it was better we didn't even have a team.

An hour later, I made my way to the court. The rest of the guys had already taken a rest for some minutes and were already warming up again. Without saying a word, I picked up a basketball and tossed it into the air towards the pole.

Miss.

I grabbed another one and I still missed.

Another, but still missed. I didn’t care anymore. I just kept serving one ball after another, not caring whether they landed in the net or flew past it. All I wanted was to get rid of the frustration bubbling inside me.

A gentle tap on my shoulder pulled me out of my thoughts. I turned around. “Hey.”

It was Ralph. Out of everyone on the team, he was the only one I could call a friend. The rest tolerated me at best.

I knew why. If I weren’t the captain and had to deal with someone like me every day, I would probably hate me too. But what choice did I have? Being captain meant making decisions that wouldn’t always make everyone happy.

“Hey.” I forced a smile.

Ralph smiled back. “Are you okay?” His eyes studied my face before he reached up and smoothed the crease between my brows with his thumb. “You looked really angry just now. Better now, though.”

I laughed quietly and pinched both his cheeks. “I’m fine.”

That was one thing I liked about Ralph. He always knew what to say to make me feel a little lighter. “Care to share?” he asked.

Before I could answer, a basketball came flying straight toward him. I reacted without thinking, catching it inches away from his face.

Ralph blinked before letting out a relieved laugh. “Thanks.”

I nodded and looked toward where the ball had come from. Of course it was Wesley. The one teammate who had never accepted any decision I made as the captain, and the same guy who always found one reason or another to always say bad stuffs about Ralph.

I walked over, with the ball still in my hand. “Hey,” I called. “What was that about?”

Wesley shrugged without any hint of guilt. “I missed.” He said but anyone with eyes could see that his smirk said otherwise.

“Ass. You expect me to believe that?” I asked.

“You can believe whatever you want, Captain.” The word *Captain* rolled off his tongue like it was an insult.

“What if it hit him? He wasn’t even looking.”

“So?” Wesley folded his arms. “It’s basketball. It’s normal that balls fly around all the time.”

“Don’t you think I know that?” I asked, getting worked up again. “But does it go straight at someone’s head?”

A few of the guys stopped practicing to watch us.

Wesley glanced around and let out a huff. “What?” He shrugged. “You going to punish me now?”

“I asked you a question.”

“And I answered, duhh.”

The two of us stared at each other. Finally, I tossed the ball back to him to stop my fist from doing the tossing. “Just keep your shots under control.”

He caught it with one hand. “I’ll try.” He whispered but the mocking smile never left his face.

I turned around before my temper got the better of me.

“Thanks,” Ralph whispered as he caught up with me.

I shook my head. “You know he did that on purpose.”

“I know,” Ralph said. “By the way, he’s my roommate. Just let him be. He’s actually nice to me when we’re alone. I don’t know if he just enjoys being rude in public. I don’t care."

Before I could answer, a sharp whistle echoed across the court.

“Everyone!”

Matteo stood at the edge of the court, with a clipboard in one hand.

So he finally decided to show up.

Immediately, my eyes met his. Matteo looked away instantly, like he was refusing to hold my gaze. A smile touched my lips because I liked that reaction. I liked knowing I still affected him.

Yesterday, after I broke into his office, he had actually struggled to get out of my grip when I held his chin up. If this had been two years ago, Matteo could have easily overpowered me. But now, he seemed to have gone weaker than I remembered, even though his frame looked bigger and broader than before.

Matteo eyes moved round the court but he couldn’t look at me for more than a second. He kept his eyes on the clipboard, tapping his pen against the plastic.

"To the baseline. Now," he ordered, his voice echoing across the court. "Five on five scrimmage. Let's see if you can actually run a play."

The guys immediately moved, rushing to line up. I took my time, walking straight to the center of the floor and taking the top position. I didn't care about the drills or his orders. My eyes were locked entirely on him.

Matteo finally raised his head snapping directly to mine. His jaw tightened instantly and I realized he was trying so hard to look like the any other head coach, but I could see that he was tense.

"Wesley, you're on the white team," Matteo called out, pointing toward the other end.

"Rowan, you're running the point."

"Got it, Coach," I said. I purposely dragged out the title, making it sound like a mockery.

He raised the whistle to his lips, his eyes burning into mine. The blast went off, and the ball was tipped.

I didn't even care about scoring or winning the scrimmage at the moment. I just wanted Matteo to watch just me, and that was exactly what he did.

Rowan POV Therapy was disheartening. I didn't want to go but since I was forced and threatened by Arthur Hayes and Matteo—his little minion, I decided to show up. Dr. Hayley didn't make it any better by asking the same irrelevant questions she always asked whenever I dropped by and sure enough i gave her the usual answers. "How's the team?" "Fine." "And your father?" "Also fine." I checked my phone under the desk. Five more minutes and I was out. "Rowan." She set her pen down, which meant she was about to say something she thought mattered. "A man called in yesterday and said he was the coach. I don’t know if he’s your family so I told him nothing about you." That got my attention. "Matteo called you?" "Matteo? He said he was concerned you missed your last session and wanted me to reach out directly instead of going through your father, you hate when your dad calls." I let out a short laugh. "Since when does he care that much?" "You tell me." She tilted her head. "You menti

Matteo POVWhen Rowan followed Arthur out of the arena earlier, I had been watching them the whole time until they disappeared through the exit. For some reason, I already knew Arthur hadn’t called him out for some father and son conversation. Arthur Hayes wasn’t that kind of father. The few times I had met him two years ago were enough to understand the kind of man he was. Everything was a transaction, even his smile was always calculated.I dropped the game report onto my desk and rubbed my temple. Tonight had been a complete mess. Earlier, I had told Rowan to come to my office after the game. I wasn’t even expecting him to come.I knew Rowan well enough to know he was going to show up whenever he felt like it. Sure enough, a few minutes later, my office door pushed open. He didn’t bother knocking as expected. Rowan Hayes had always done whatever pleased him.I looked up from the papers on my desk.“So…” Rowan closed the door behind him before stuffing both hands into his pockets. “

Rowan POV"You’ve been ignoring my calls this days." My father said, not even waiting for my response. He turned around, and that was the cue to follow behind him.If there was one person in this world I absolutely hated getting on the bad side of, it was Arthur Hayes. To the university board and the public, he was just a generous booster with an easy demeanor. But to me, he was a wolf in sheep's clothing. He controlled every single aspect of my existence, and he knew exactly which strings to pull to keep me in line. The biggest string was my mother. He had already restricted my access to her before, cutting off my visits to her whenever my performance dropped or whenever I dared to talk back. I couldn't risk him doing it again. If I completely fell out of his favor, he was going make sure I never saw her at all.We walked out into the VIP parking lot and stepped into the back of his black car. The door clicked shut, cutting off the distant noise of the arena and leaving us in a stifl

Rowan POVThursday night arrived far too quickly. The athletic complex was louder than usual, the hum of a decent crowd filtering through the heavy concrete walls of the locker room. But while the rest of the guys were pulling on their white home jerseys and lacing up their sneakers, I was standing in front of a mirror, pulling a dark tie around my neck.Wesley was a few lockers down, looking equally miserable in a stiff blazer that I would say it didn't fit him right, even if it does. He hadn't said a word to me since the bleacher runs, and I preferred it that way."Rowan."I didn't turn around, watching Ralph’s reflection approach me in the glass. He had his jersey on, his warm up jacket zipped to his chin. He looked entirely out of his depth."Don't worry about it," I said flatly, tightening the knot of my tie. "Just run the plays I told you to look out for. The alumni are going to try and bully you physically in the paint. Don't let them.""It's not that," Ralph whispered, looking

Rowan POV The silence in the gym was suffocating. After Matteo had successfully ripped I and Wesley apart from each other’s neck. "Locker room. Both of you. Now," Matteo said, his voice dropping. Wesley wiped a smear of blood from his jaw, glaring at me with pure hatred before turning on his heel and storming towards the locker room. I stayed rooted to the spot, my chest heaving, staring straight into Matteo's cold, unreadable eyes. I wanted him to say something but his expression told me he was so angry. He looked at the remaining players on the floor. "The rest of you, hit the showers. Practice is over." I didn't wait for the guys to disperse. I turned around and walked down the locker room. When I kicked open the locker room door, Wesley was already throwing his gear into his duffel bag, muttering curses under his breath. Ralph was standing near the water cooler, looking entirely stressed out. "Rowan, man, you can't just—" Ralph started, but I cut him off with a harsh gl

Rowan POV I couldn’t sleep. By the time I pulled my car into the campus lot the next morning, my eyes burned. I slung my gym bag over my shoulder and kicked the athletic complex doors open. I was early today so I wasn’t expecting the guys. I just wanted to get out on the court before anyone else showed up. When I reached the locker room doors, there was already a small crowd gathered around the main bulletin board. The guys showed up early today? Wesley, Ralph, and three other varsity guys were standing in their warmups. The moment, they noticed me… Wesley turned around with an obnoxious smirk stretching across his face. Ralph looked up next, his expression instantly dropping. "What?" I barked, stepping up to the board. "You guys lost your ability to speak overnight?" Wesley didn't say a word. He just stepped aside, bowing dramatically as he gestured toward the newly printed paper pinned to the center of the corkboard. I pushed past him, my eyes scanning the sheet. It was
