I froze as I stared at my phone. I couldn’t believe what was on the screen, but the notifications continued rushing in.

“Andrew Vane accused of $900m embezzlement.”

My hands started shaking when I saw people calling for my father’s head. They wouldn’t even give him the benefit of the doubt. They just want his head!

“Lyra!” My dad’s voice rang out loud as he pushed open the door and ran in.

“I didn’t do it, honey!” He said while my brows furrowed.

“Of course, daddy, I know! You’d never do such! Someone is behind this!” I exclaimed while he came closer and held my hands.

“No honey, it’s not just someone. This is a coup against me and I don’t know who to trust. They already froze our accounts, investors and board are calling for my head too. I need you to go to John’s place. He’s my oldest friend and the only one I can trust now. Go to him and he will take care of you.” He let out while I yanked off his hands.

“No daddy, I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying right here with you. We will fight this together!” I insisted while he took my hands again.

“You’re not getting it. There’s no fighting this, it’s a coup. A well planned one that I can’t fight without proof and power. I need to go into hiding for now but I can’t take you with me.” He went on to explain the real situation of things to me.

For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes and I knew it was really serious.

“Fine, but I’m going to Matt’s place instead. I’ll stay with him till everything dies down.” I replied.

“He loves me dad, I’ll be fine with him.” I quickly added when I saw the reluctance on his face.

We didn’t wait after that. I packed some of my things that could fit in a box and then left.

The drive to Matt’s place was so frustrating. My credit cards were declined at the gas station and that was when it dawned on me. My life has really took a hit.

I pulled in front of the house and hurried inside. I couldn’t wait to be in his hands and enjoy his warmth. That would atleast calm my nerves.

Matt is the only thing left in my life that’s working right now…

“Babe…” I called out as I made my way to the room but as I got closer, I started to hear some funny sounds.

I heard what it was clearly but I didn’t want to believe it, so I waited for my eyes to confirm it.

I got to the room and the door was opened widely, and right in front of me was the love of my life having sex with another woman.

They were so engrossed that they didn’t even notice they had gotten an audience.

“Matt, you son of a bitch!” I screamed with everything inside of me.

That was when they jumped out of bed and I couldn’t believe it when I saw the face of the lady.

My new business partner?

“Joanne?” I called out gently but I didn’t wait for excuses.

I turned around and ran out. I hurried into my car and zoomed off.

Matt was out too and running after me but he later stopped when he couldn’t catch up. He kept waving his hands for me to stop but I didn’t.

Joanne is my new business partner and it was only a week ago at a fundraising event that I introduced her to Matt.

I don’t know how she got in his bed so fast but from the look on her face just now, she definitely felt no remorse!

I kept driving for about an hour until I got to an hotel. It was quite a long ride from home so people probably wouldn’t recognize me here.

Still, I checked in under a false name, using the remaining three thousand dollars on me to get a room. I was offered food but I opted for alcohol instead.

After the way my life took a dive, only something strong can help drown the intense pain that I felt.

I got to my room and started downing the drinks till my eyes got completely blurred. I was numbed out and could no longer feel any pain. I was about to blackout when I suddenly heard a loud knock.

“Go away!” I let out since I don’t remember ordering for anything.

The knock stilI didn’t stop so I struggled to get on my feet and then threw the door open, ready to scream at the intruder.

“I said…” the words died in my throat the moment I saw the man in front of me.

He was tall with broad shoulders, dark messy hair that made him look so hot. His shirt was half-buttoned, revealing his hairy chest. And there was something dangerously hot about the way he leaned against the doorframe, that made me my whole body shiver.

He was drunk just like me and for a second, we just stared at each other. His gaze dropped to my lips while mine dragged slowly over his face. I could feel the heat between us increase and the next thing I knew, his hand was on my waist, pulling me against him, and my fingers were gripping his shirt tightly.

We stumbled inside, the door slamming shut behind us while we hurried out of our clothes.

We jumped at each other and kissed each other hard. We couldn’t even make it to the bed before he pushed hard into me, and we had sex right there on the floor.

It didn’t stop there, we went again and again till we ran out of breath. We crashed into the bed then and slept off…

I woke up to the lights from the curtain almost blinding me. I groaned as I got out of bed to close it. My head was throbbing really hard and I knew it was the hangover. I don’t do well with alcohol but I had no choice last night. I couldn’t explain the tingling pain between my legs though.

I got back into bed, and was about pulling the sheets when I saw him…

There was a naked stranger in my bed!

I pushed myself back up, clutching the sheet to my chest while my heart pounded as I screamed out loud.

He jumped up immediately and once he saw me, he stepped back and got at alert.

“What are you doing in my room?” We both asked at the same time.

“You’re the one in my room!” I let out while he looked at me like I was crazy.

“That’s not possible. I don’t share my room with anyone ever. Aren’t you the stripper from the club? Why didn’t you leave when I was done with you?” He asked and my stomach twisted.

“You’re the one in my room, and I’m not a stripper!” I yelled but then became quiet immediately.

I just remembered everything and from the way his eyes lowered, he did too.

I was so embarrassed and could no longer look in her eyes anymore.

Oh my goodness, how on earth did I have a night stand with a stranger?!

“This was a mistake.” He finally said as he started to dress up and then reached into his pocket.

He pulled out his wallet, took out a stack of cash and threw it on the bed.

“That’s your pay!” He said rudely while I gasped in shock.

“What? You’re paying me? I am not a…”

“I don’t care what you are!” He cut in sharply.

“Excuse me?” I whispered.

“I know exactly what girls like you do, you go after rich guys like me and then use sex as leverage. But let me warn you, if you ever think of using last night to get a cheap headline against me, I’ll make sure you spend the rest of your life in a windowless cell. If you so much as mention my name to a blogger, I will ruin whatever pathetic life you have left. Do you understand?" He said coldly and before I could say another word, he was already out the door.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I stared at the money on the bed.

Just twenty-four hours ago, I was Lyra Vane the billionaire heiress, with power and class.

But now, I’m broke, my dad is in hiding, my boyfriend betrayed me, and a complete stranger just treated me like trash.

“Wow, Lyra, your life is officially a mess!” I whispered to myself.
