Chapter 1

Author: xx22
On the tenth day after I filed for divorce, I ran into Rachel Melton in the hospital corridor. She was helping Todd Weber walk, treating him like he was made of glass.

The second Rachel saw me, her brow furrowed. "What are you doing here? Are you here to start trouble with Todd again?"

She eyed me warily, her cold gaze cutting straight to the bone.

Todd grabbed Rachel's hand and gave me an apologetic look. "Joel, don't get the wrong idea. Rachel just worries too much about me."

As he spoke, his gaze shifted to the can of baby formula I was carrying. "I heard Diana was admitted to the hospital too. Is she okay?"

Before I could answer, Rachel jumped in to reassure him. "It's probably just a mild fever. She'll be fine. Don't overthink things. You just focus on getting better."

My grip tightened around the shopping bag in my hand as a bitter feeling settled in my chest.

Of course. What could there possibly be to worry about? So what if Diana Cantrell, our daughter, was sick? She could never be more important to Rachel than Todd.

Otherwise, how could Rachel not check on her even once when she knew full well Diana and I were in the same hospital?

All she had to do was come to our daughter's room once, and she would've learned that our little girl was already gone.

I gave a bitter, twisted smile and reached into my pocket, my fingers brushing against a small glass jar that had grown warm from my touch.

Ever since Todd came back, Rachel had been disappearing every few days to be with him.

She would say, "Todd has always been sensitive. Now that he's sick, I can't just leave him alone. What if something happens to him? Trust me. I just don't want him doing anything reckless. This doesn't mean anything."

She had promised me she'd only visit him 99 times. After the 99th visit, she'd put it all behind her, and we'd go back to living our normal lives.

So, every time she walked out the door to see him, I'd drop a single bean into that jar.

More than a week ago, I had finally dropped in the 99th bean. But when I rushed to Rachel with Diana in my arms and hope in my heart, I was met with the sight of Todd holding Rachel tightly in his arms.

She was my wife, and I was her husband.

Yet there I was, standing on the sidewalk, forced to watch her share an intimate moment with another man.

I walked up to them, my eyes bloodshot, and asked blankly, "What are you two doing?"

Rachel jerked away from Todd like she'd touched a live wire, panic written all over her face. "Joel, don't get the wrong idea. It's not what it looks like."

I opened my mouth to speak, but Todd beat me to it. "It's all my fault. I shouldn't have come between you two. I'm sorry. Rachel, you should just leave me alone from now on. Just let me die out on the streets."

He then dashed into the street and was immediately clipped by a passing bicycle.

Rachel's face drained of color. Without a second thought, she pushed me aside and rushed over to pull Todd into her arms.

Before I could brace myself, I hit the ground hard, nearly dropping Diana in the process. A dull, throbbing pain shot up my tailbone, and Diana burst into terrified wails from the sudden jolt.

"It's okay, Diana. Daddy's here…"

Seeing her tiny face turn bright red from crying made me feel as though my heart was being crushed. "Honey! Rachel Melton!"

And with every passing thought, her panic only grew, along with a deepening resentment toward Todd. But every time she reminded herself that he was unwell, she had no choice but to bury the resentment, leaving her feeling miserable. She wanted to look for me and start over, to make amends. But unfortunately, I had already told her that I never wanted to see her again. She used to think that watching Todd threaten suicide was the most painful thing in the world. Now she realized that what hurt her most was losing me. Alas, it was already too late. The police chief was one of Rachel's f

When Rachel got home, she yelled, "Joel! Joel! I was wrong, Joel! I'm so sorry! I got the charm bracelet you wanted! Joel!"But no matter how loudly she shouted, no one answered. A wave of panic washed over her right then. She checked the living room, the kitchen, and the bedroom, but there was no one in sight. A thought hit her, and she opened the wardrobe. Half the clothes were gone.Everything that belonged to me was missing. All that was left was a white dress.I had bought it for Rachel when we got married. She had been 19 then, and she'd said, "Joel, can you buy me a white dress for our wedding? My mother said brides should wear white on their wedding day. That's the only way to guarantee a happy marriage."I'd agreed to it. And on our wedding day, she had worn that beautiful dress. But our marriage had been anything but happy.Rachel thought back to that day when she had braided hair and a shy blush on her cheeks. In front of both our families, she had placed her hand in m

Todd immediately crouched down, trying to cover the red cord with his hands."N-Nothing…"Rachel's face darkened, her gaze turning razor-sharp. "Where's the charm bracelet I asked you to hold onto? Give it to me."Todd looked away guiltily, unable to meet her eyes. "Rachel, it's just a charm bracelet. I—""I'm only going to say this one last time. Give it to me."She stared at him, a storm brewing in her eyes.Only then did Todd begin to panic. He stood up before nervously taking a step back, revealing the charm hanging from his ankle. The words "luck" and "joy" could be seen on it. That charm was exactly like the one on the bracelet Rachel had bought. She lunged forward and yanked it off his ankle, her fist clenching so tightly that her nails dug into her palm. "Nurse, did you just say Joel came by?" she asked hoarsely. Lily frowned. "Joel? You mean Joel Cantrell? Yes, he was here. I saw him walking out of this room, which is why I came over to talk to you."Todd shot Lil

If the book had landed just a bit further to the right, it would've hit the nurse's eye.The head nurse, Janet Smith, carefully cleaned the wound with a disinfectant swab while asking in a concerned tone, "Lily, what happened here?"Lily Barnett had just started working at the hospital that year. She was only 19 years old and was still single. An injury to her face meant she might be left with a scar that could affect her chances of finding a partner in the future.Lily was well aware of this as well. Her eyes welled up with tears at Janet's concern. "Janet, he threw a book at me."She pointed at Todd, looking hurt.Janet's expression turned icy. "Care to explain, sir? We live in a civilized society. If you attack someone for no reason, you'll be held accountable."Todd had calmed down by then, but his eyes betrayed a flicker of panic when he heard Janet. He instinctively looked at Rachel, hoping she'd speak up for him. When Rachel met his gaze, she reflexively tried to defend

The food container hit the floor with a sharp clatter. Food spilled everywhere, but no one seemed to care about the mess.Rachel shot to her feet, disbelief evident in her voice. "W-What did you just say?"Startled, the nurse looked at her in confusion. "Are you Joel's family member? His baby passed away a while ago. The death certificate is still missing an official stamp. I saw him walk out of this room just now, so I came over to ask. Which one of you is related to him?"Rachel opened her mouth, her face instantly draining of color. "I-I'm his wife."The moment the nurse heard that, her previously polite demeanor vanished. She looked Rachel up and down with open disdain. "So you're Joel Cantrell's irresponsible wife? Your baby had a fever and was hospitalized for so long, yet you couldn't even be bothered to visit once? That's really something."Rachel's gaze wavered as she struggled to get the words out. "I… I didn't know it was that serious…"The nurse scoffed harshly. "You

Rachel walked over and raised her hand. But instead of reaching for the drawer, her fingers brushed the corner of my eye. "Were you crying?"She stared blankly at the moisture on her fingertips, seemingly at a loss. With a smile, I casually said, "I'm just worried about Diana since she's sick. It just came out all of a sudden. But I'll be fine."Rachel let out a breath of relief. "Oh, good. I forgot to ask earlier—what kind of charm do you want on the bracelet? How about one with the words 'luck' and 'joy'? Things are pretty strict right now at the base, so it's probably better to keep the design simple."I froze for a second. I hadn't expected her to care so much about the details. If only she'd been this attentive before… "That sounds good," I replied. "You can decide."After hearing my answer, she nodded and turned to leave. But right before closing the door, she asked one last time, "Are you sure you're really okay?"I parted my lips, a tiny spark of hope suddenly ignitin
