LOGINAmber’s POV
The first day at work felt heavier than I expected. My outfit, the only decent clothes that seemed harmless at least to me, didn't sit well with some people. Not that I cared, I just wanted to make a good impression with the people I would be working with but the whispers started the moment I stepped into the office. “They’re really letting anyone in these days,” one woman said with disgust shown all over her face. “Did she even try? That outfit, really?” another sneered. I kept my head high, walking with my confidence and pretending not to hear. Pretending became an art over the years. But someone had heard. And it wasn’t just anyone. “Amber,” a voice cut through the murmur, low and angry. I looked up to find Adrian standing there, eyes sharp like they were boring into my soul. “You are not going to a meeting dressed like that.” I swallowed, keeping my composure. The look on his face was filled with irritation. His tone was demeaning and full of that arrogant authority he wielded effortlessly. “I… I didn’t realize…” I started, but he interrupted, stepping closer. “Don’t start,” he snapped. “I will not have you humiliating yourself or me in front of clients.” I bit my tongue. Of course, I couldn’t argue. Not yet. I had to survive this. Adrian’s POV She looked ordinary, too ordinary and it irritated me. I couldn’t stand seeing her like this, there was something frustratingly human about her appearance. I don’t know why she would wear these rags to cover her beautiful self. “Did I just compliment her?” But despite the stares and talks, her eyes still held that stubborn spark. “You’re coming with me. Now.” Amber’s eyes widened as we moved through racks of silk blouses and tailored jackets. I watched silently, noting how the clothes fit her frame perfectly. Finally, I paused and looked at her. “You look a bit human now.” She blinked, processing the words. I didn’t soften them. Why would I? It amused me, to see her blush slightly, embarrassed yet proud. We finally got to the conference room, and as soon as she entered, the room lit up. I felt proud that I had her beside me and she was mine alone. Not until the meeting ended and I saw her get familiar with Richard Hale. I couldn’t stand it. The way she laughed with him. Friendly and familiar, I don’t think she has ever shown me that side of her. The audacity of it, I ended it abruptly, clearing my throat. “Amber, let’s go.” I draped my arms over her shoulders as if trying to mark my territory and I hoped he got the message. In the car, the silence was thick. I finally spoke, voice low, not wanting her to read meaning into my questions. “How do you know him?” “An acquaintance,” she said lightly. “He helped me once. That’s all.” “I see.” I didn’t believe her. Why work for me and still be friendly with a rival? My chest felt odd. Was it Jealousy or Fear? The feeling was new, and it unsettled me more than I cared to admit. Richard’s Pov For me, it was just another business meeting where I had to sit through it with Adrian glaring daggers at me. I wonder why he thinks the work should always revolve around him. Surprisingly, I got to the meeting before him which was unusual, Adrian has always been the early bird type. Just as I was thinking, he strolled in with a gorgeous lady behind him. I heard he got a new P.A but I didn’t expect her to be this gorgeous. She turned around to pass some documents to him and that’s when I saw her, Amber. We had a short encounter but she lingered in my mind longer than usual which was weird to me. I couldn’t wait for the meeting to end so I could get to talk to her. I found myself stealing glances at her and for some reason found Richard staring at her too. “Amber, is that you?” She looked at me with surprise and made a face as if trying to recall my name. “Richard, it’s you. Why are you here? “For the meeting, of course. Why else would I be here?” “Of course.” She said amidst laughter. Her laughter was filled with warmth. It did something to me, something I didn’t want to admit. She laughed lightly at a joke I barely made, her eyes bright and beautiful. “Why are you here though?” I asked her. “Uhm, I accompanied my boss for the meeting.” “Your boss? Don’t tell me you work for Adrian, piggy face, arrogant Adrian? “Stop it, he’s not that bad plus he’s not a piggy face.” She said dreamily, like she was already imagining his face. “Are you his new personal assistant?” “Yes, resumed today actually, you couldn’t tell right?” She asked. “Yea, you did amazingly well for your first time.” She blushed. I liked that I had that much effect on her, her cheeks turning rosy pink was my highlight of the day. Everything about her was perfect, was it her eyes that exuded the golden glow or the lips that sat prettily on her face. Still basking in her beauty, I heard Adrian speak. “Amber, let’s go.” Authoritative as usual but why did I feel like it was laced with jealousy and possessiveness. As Adrian led her away, I could see his arm resting on her shoulders like a deliberate act to spite me. One thing was certain, Amber was no longer someone I intended to forget.Adrian’s POVThe convoy tore through the empty streets, sirens cutting through the silence of the night. I sat in the back seat, my gun resting on my lap while my eyes stayed fixed on the tablet displaying the abandoned warehouse.“Five minutes out, sir,” the driver announced. My mind replayed the call over and over.“It’s coming from inside your old properties list.”Whoever they were, they knew my past. Which meant they either knew me or someone close to me did.“We’re here.”The SUVs came to a halt outside the old warehouse. The building looked exactly how I remembered it, abandoned, forgotten and lifeless.I stepped out first. “Spread out,” I ordered. “Make sure nobody leaves this place.”My men moved immediately. I pushed open the warehouse door, gun raised. The hinges groaned loudly. There were no voices or movement. It was just abandoned crates, broken furniture and years of dust.“Clear!” I heard one of the men shout from upstairs.Another voice echoed from the back.“Nothing h
Adrian’s POV“FIND THAT VAN NOW!”My voice echoed through the room, sharp enough to make everyone get to work immediately. “Plate number, sir?” “Zoom in,” I snapped. The footage was zoomed in, blurry but not useless.“Enhance that frame. I want every digit and every scratch on that vehicle.”My chest felt tight like something was pressing down on it. What was this feeling? Fear? No, I'm supposed to be composed in this situation and not let them see me falling. But this, this was something i never imagined would happen. I watched the screen again and again and I couldn’t help but notice how they rough-handled my woman. The way they grabbed her and the way she struggled to break free. My jaw clenched, whoever did this to her was going to pay and that was my vow.“Sir, we’ve got partial plates,” one of my men said quickly. “Tracking traffic cams now.”“Do it faster.”I ran a hand through my hair, as I paced back and forth the room. This wasn’t random, It was too clean like it w
Adrian’s pov Standing outside her room, I kept pacing back and forth not knowing whether to knock or just walk past. Since the last incident, she’s been avoiding me and it’s worse since we didn’t go to work anymore.I could hear the rustling pages of a book, I guess she’s reading a book. I really don’t even know how to go over and invite her for the banquet we would be going for. She made it clear to me that she hated my guts and didn’t want to have anything to do with me but this banquet is a huge deal for me as I get to meet investors too. I knocked on her door twice but got no response and just as I was about to leave, I heard the door creak open. It looked like she had been away for months while she was just here but staying away from me. “I’m sorry to disturb you, I just wanted to give you this.” I said stretching out my hand to give her a box. It contained a gown and jewellery for the banquet tonight. She looked at the box and back at me before muttering some words. “What’s
Adrian’s POVI watched the footage again and it was clearly Amber’s room. The camera angle was precise and it looked like it was planted more like a device. It didn’t look like it was taken by chance or from outside, it looked like an inside job. Who would come to my house to plant a device or did my workers betray me?My jaw tightened.“Run it back,” I said. The screen flickered as the video replayed. The angle didn’t move, it was a fixed position and it was hidden well. This wasn’t Aaron. This was way too professional and well thought out to be Aaron. Aaron was clumsy, he didn’t even have the resources to be able to get this close to my house. This wasn’t some desperate ex trying to make money, this was calculated. My phone buzzed.“Sir, we’ve got movement again.”“Location?”“It’s inconsistent. He’s switching fast. Burner devices.”I exhaled slowly, forcing my thoughts into order. Burner devices? Now it’s clear, I have ruled out Aaron certainly. He’s not capable enough to use bu
Adrian’s POVI didn’t sleep a wink last night, not because of her this time but because of that message.“You really think you’ve won? Let’s see how long she stays yours.”I stood in my study, staring at the screen again like I could figure out who the coward was or the words would somehow change. Whoever this was, they weren’t just bluffing. And that meant one thing, this wasn’t random.I dialed a number immediately, and he picked up the second ring.“Sir.”“I want everything pulled up again,” I said, my voice sharp. “Calls, messages, digital footprints. I don’t care how clean they think they are, find them.”“Yes, sir.”“And increase security.”“For her?”“For the house, for the office and everywhere she goes.”“Yes, sir.”I ended the call, my grip tightening around the phone. Whoever this was, they knew exactly what they were doing. I thought about this long and hard but I couldn’t figure anything out and it was driving me crazy. I stepped out of the study just as I saw her walki
Amber’s POVI stayed awake all night staring at the ceiling in my room. Sleep wasn’t forthcoming as I relayed the day’s events over and over again.I couldn’t help but think about him and the way he said those words “You’re mine.” Something about it sent a tingling sensation down my spine. The words kept replaying in my head like a song I didn’t want to remember but couldn’t forget either. I turned on the bed, pulling the duvet tighter around me.This was getting out of hand, It was just a contract.A one-year agreement and nothing more so why did it feel like something was shifting?I exhaled and sat up. Maybe I needed water or something to distract me from the excessive thinking. The house was quiet as I stepped out, what did I expect? He’s probably asleep, it’s so late on the night. But just as I got to the kitchen, I saw him. He was leaning against the counter, sleeves rolled up and a glass of water in his hand. He looked like he had been there for a while and his ruffled ha
Amber’s pov It was already evening before I could discuss with Vee the reason why Adrian’s grandmother came to see me and she wasn’t having it. “What do you mean she wants you to marry her grandson to change him? Does that even make sense?” She said irritated. “I don’t know what to do Vee, I’m
Amber’s POV I didn’t stop running until I got to Vee’s place. My chest was rising and falling all at the same time. My mind still spinning from everything that had just happened. The kiss, the cameras and him. “Amber?” Vee’s voice came from behind me, laced with concern. “What happened? You look
Richard’s POVI didn’t know she could be any more beautiful than she already is. The moment they walked in, the entire room shifted. Heads turned and cameras flashed but none of that mattered to me.Because all I could see was her.She walked beside Adrian, her hand resting lightly on his arm,
Adrian’s POVI glanced at my watch and only then did I realize how late I had stayed up.I stepped out of the study and was met with silence. The kind that didn’t just sit in a room, it was suffocating. Ever since that morning, she had been avoiding me.Not in an obvious way, Amber was smarter tha
