Chapter 1: You were convenient

last update publish date: 2026-05-15 18:05:12

Honey’s fingers trembled as she stared at the pictures on her screen without blinking.

Her boyfriend, Jimmy, stood on a stage in a white tuxedo.

He was getting married.

Her stomach twisted violently.

For a moment, Honey forgot how to breathe.

The same man who had ignored her calls for two weeks.

The same man who had left every one of her texts unanswered.

He was getting married.

And he looked happy.

Her thumb shook as she clicked on the live video beneath the post.

The wedding was already in full swing.

The hall was breathtaking, dripping in wealth and elegance. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead. Soft golden lights glowed against polished marble floors. An orchestra played in the background, wrapping the room in the kind of beauty that cost a fortune.

Then the bride appeared.

She walked slowly down the aisle in a stunning limited-edition gown, the fabric shimmering with hand-beaded diamonds. Every step looked like something out of a dream.

She stopped in front of Jimmy and turned.

Honey’s heart stopped.

Kimberly.

Jimmy’s cousin.

Her entire body went cold.

“No… no… this can’t be true.”

Tears blurred her vision so fast she could barely see the screen.

“Hey, bestie, what’s going on?” Jade asked, alarm instantly filling her voice.

Honey pressed a hand to her chest like she could hold herself together by force.

“Jimmy is getting married.”

Jade blinked.

“What? The same bastard we’ve been looking for these past two weeks?”

She laughed once, disbelieving.

“That can’t be true, Honey.”

“See for yourself.”

Honey thrust the phone toward her with trembling hands.

Jade snatched it and stared.

“Oh. My. God.”

Her eyes widened.

“It really is Jimmy.”

Then she squinted at the bride and frowned.

“Wait… isn’t that Kimberly? His cousin?”

Honey gave a weak nod, tears spilling over.

Jade looked back at her, stunned fury rising in her expression.

“How could they? How could they do this to you?”

“He left me…” Honey whispered.

Her big brown eyes looked shattered.

“He left with my money.”

All this time, she had thought Jimmy was missing.

Or sick.

Or in trouble.

But he wasn’t.

He was getting married.

Honey collapsed to the floor, sobbing so hard it hurt.

“I gave him everything… He left with my heart, my money, my future…”

Jade’s face crumpled with pity.

She dropped down immediately and wrapped her arms around her.

“I’m sorry, Honey,” she whispered, rubbing her back.

Then her voice hardened.

“But this is not the time to stay here crying. Let’s go confront that bastard.”

She rose to her feet and pulled Honey up with her.

“I know that hall. It’s Domino’s Event Center. Thirty minutes away.”

Honey nodded weakly, her face drained of color.

She let Jade drag her out of the house, moving like a soulless thing, seeing the world through tear-blurred eyes.

Moments later, they were in Jade’s car, speeding toward the wedding venue.

Honey felt the breath leave her body the second she stepped into the hall.

The place was packed.

Conversations faltered.

Heads turned one after another as she walked in.

She moved toward the stage like a woman in a trance.

Jimmy and Kimberly had just finished exchanging vows.

Their mouths were still locked in a kiss when they turned and saw her standing there.

Their eyes widened instantly.

“So it’s true,” Honey said softly, even though the truth was already carved into her chest.

“What is she doing here?” Kimberly demanded, panic flashing across her face.

Jimmy frowned.

“Don’t worry, baby. I’ll handle it.”

Then he turned to Honey with a face so cold it made her stomach twist.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Not even fear.

Nothing.

“What are you doing here?” he asked.

Honey let out a broken laugh.

“I thought you told me she was your cousin.”

“Don’t do this here, Honey,” Jimmy said through clenched teeth.

“You deceived me,” she choked out. “You took my money and disappeared.”

Kimberly folded her arms and stepped forward, her expression full of mockery.

“I’m not his cousin, okay? You were just stupid enough to believe whatever Jimmy told you. You couldn’t even see the red flags.”

Honey’s hands curled into fists so tightly her nails bit into her palms.

“You both ate my food. You both drove my car. You borrowed money from me. How could you?”

“Please don’t cause a scene,” Jimmy muttered.

Honey threw her hands up and laughed — a sharp, broken sound that didn’t even sound like her own.

“I shouldn’t cause a scene?”

She turned in a slow circle, clapping wildly.

“Wow. Beautiful hall, beautiful wedding, all the talk of the town…”

Then her voice rose, cracking through the room like thunder.

“With my own money!”

A ripple of gasps swept through the guests.

“Honey, calm down. You’re embarrassing yourself,” Jimmy said.

In one swift move, Honey stepped forward and punched Jimmy hard across the nose.

He stumbled back with a scream.

“Oh, my nose! You broke my nose!”

Honey glared at him, chest rising and falling.

“You fucking broke my heart, you bastard. And the pain you’re feeling right now is nothing compared to what you did to me.”

Jimmy pressed a handkerchief to his bleeding nose, fury twisting his face.

“You know what your problem is, Honey?” he snapped. “You don’t know how to control your damn emotions.”

Honey stared at him, stunned.

He went on coldly, “I’m not the first man to do something like this. Be a big girl and suck it up.”

For a second, all she could do was blink.

“What the hell…?”

Her lips trembled violently.

“You’re not even sorry?”

“Not one bit,” Jimmy said with a sneer. “I don’t love you. And I can’t be with a woman I don’t love.”

Honey’s voice broke in half.

“B-but you’ve been with me all these years… taking and taking… my love, my money, my everything…”

Jimmy shrugged.

“You were convenient.”

That one word hit harder than the wedding.

Honey staggered back, clutching her chest as if she could physically hold herself together.

Then Jade moved.

Before anyone could react, she grabbed a flower vase from a nearby stand and smashed it straight into Jimmy’s face.

He crashed to the floor with a heavy thud.

“Somebody call security!” Kimberly screamed, dropping beside him in tears as she lifted his bloody head into her lap.

Jade didn’t flinch.

She looked down at him with pure disgust.

“You deserve worse, you jerk.”

Then she spat on him, grabbed Honey’s hand, and dragged her out of the hall.

“Nichole, darling, come down for breakfast,” Maya’s warm voice called, followed by a gentle knock on the door. The sound pulled Honey from a deep, exhausted sleep. She had stayed up late the night before, combing through every drawer and closet in Nichole’s room, hunting for any clue that might explain why they looked like identical twins. Nothing turned up. Frustrated and drained, she had finally collapsed into bed.Honey freshened up quickly and slipped into a comfortable lounge set. By the time she reached the dining room, the whole family was already seated at the elegant table, waiting for her. The polished scene felt like a dream compared to the constant struggles of her own family back home.“Good morning, everyone,” Honey said with a bright smile as she entered. She leaned down and hugged Grandma Nana tightly.Nana pecked her on the cheek. “How was your night, darling?”“Beautiful,” Honey replied, smiling as she took the seat right next to Nana. She wanted to stay close to the

“Oh, Nichole... you had us so worried,” Maya said tearfully, cupping Honey’s face in both hands as her eyes filled with tears. “I’m sorry, Mum,” Honey replied softly, slipping into the role as naturally as she could. Liam stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her. “Don’t ever do this to us again.” “Never again, Dad,” Honey said with a small smile. God. They really think I’m Nichole. For one brief moment, the warmth in their voices made something twist painfully inside her. They loved their daughter. That much was obvious. It wasn’t forced. It wasn’t for show. It wasn’t the kind of cold, performative affection rich families displayed in public and forgot in private. It was real. And standing in the middle of it, wearing another woman’s face and name, Honey suddenly felt a wave of guilt press hard against her chest. She had expected arrogance. Distance. Maybe even cruelty. Not this. Not parents who looked at her like they had just gotten their whole world back. “

“How do I look?” Honey asked innocently, doing a slow three-sixty in front of him.Jay opened his mouth to answer, but for a moment, no words came out.Honey frowned. “I hope this is good enough.”“Y-yes,” Jay said at last, trying to catch his breath. “Did you really make this yourself?”“Of course I did.” Honey smiled, flipping her hair over her shoulder. She narrowed her eyes at him. “Wait... you don’t believe me?”A laugh slipped from her lips. “What? You think some magical fairy jumped into my room and helped me sew all this?”Jay let out a quiet breath. “I’m just surprised. Your dress is beautiful.”“Thank you.” Honey’s smile softened. “I’ve been making dresses since I was eight.”Jay looked genuinely impressed. “Wow. That’s a really young age to start.”Honey gave a small shrug, but there was pride in her eyes. “It’s what I love.”Jay’s gaze lingered on her longer than it should have. She looked stunning. Not because she was trying too hard. Not because she was dressed like the

Honey’s heart would not stop racing as she waited for Jay’s response.Jay’s brows furrowed immediately, as though he was trying to remember something.“I don’t remember anything from that night,” he said at last. “I was too drunk.”Honey shifted uneasily on her feet. She had not expected such a vague answer. Then again, she had been drunk too. She couldn’t remember anything either.“Let’s just forget about it,” Jay said.“Yes,” Honey nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. An awkward silence fell over the room, making both of them uncomfortable.“I hope you like your room,” Jay said after a while.“Yes. It’s beautiful,” Honey answered.“Okay… rest well. We leave for the Sinclairs’ mansion in the morning.”“Alright,” Honey said with a nod.But Jay did not leave. He kept looking at her like he wanted to say something more.Honey stared back at him, waiting to hear whatever was on his mind.Instead, Jay turned and walked toward the door.“Good night, Honey,” he said before closing it

Jay sat on a plush pink chair in the boutique, watching Honey as she sorted through the dresses hanging on the rack.“What do you think about this one?” she asked each time she stepped out in a different dress.Jay would nod, but his attention kept drifting elsewhere. His eyes followed the curve of her back. The soft sway of her hips as she moved in and out of the changing room.Honey was different.Even the way she walked was different from Nichole. That might be a problem, Jay thought. Finally, Honey stepped out of the dressing room again. Jay and the sales assistant both looked at her in expectation.“Which one do you like?” he asked.Honey pouted. “None of them match my style or personality.”Jay sighed. “What exactly do you want, Honey? I can have a personal stylist get whatever you need.”Honey shook her head. “I want to make my dresses myself.”Jay’s brows shot up. “What? You’re joking, right?”But the look on Honey’s face told him she meant every word.Jay paused. “You’re seri

“And who the hell are you?” Erick growled, his voice thick with suspicion as he sized up the man standing between him and his niece. “Someone you don’t want to mess with,” Jay replied, his tone low and dangerously calm. It was a voice Honey had never heard from him before—cold steel wrapped in quiet control. Erick’s hand dropped away from her. He narrowed his eyes, studying Jayson’s face like a man trying to place a half-remembered ghost. “You look familiar,” he muttered. Jay turned his head slightly, just enough to shift out of the direct light. Honey caught the subtle move and understood immediately. He didn’t want her uncle connecting the dots—that this was the governor’s son standing in a hospital room with his broke, disheveled niece. Erick stood there a second longer, brows furrowed. The resemblance nagged at him. He looks like the governor’s kid. But then he shook his head, dismissing the thought. Nah. No way a man like that would be mixed up with my sorry-ass niece.

“You’re really not Nichole?” The question slipped out before Jay could stop it. It came out rough, almost broken, like something dragged up from deep inside him. Honey blinked at him, confused. She grabbed a napkin and wiped her fingers slowly, buying herself a second. “My name is Honey Maria
