Avery's POV.

Cold water soaked through the thin fabric around my knees as I scrubbed the stone floor.

The brush scraped harshly across the surface, the sound echoing faintly in the quiet kitchen.

Scrub. Rinse. Scrub again.

My hands were already red from the cold water, but I kept going. My hand pressed harder against the floor.

My entire life… I never imagined I'd end up like this.

Being held captive by this monster. A maid. Not like I was treated any better at home.

Father will pay for this, I will make sure he does. He's going to regret sending me here.

“I swear it,” I muttered as a single tear landed on the floor.

“What did you say?”

I didn’t need to turn around to know who it was.

Lena.

“Nothing, just thinking.” I replied. “About how unfortunate I have been.”

She gave half a nod, then glanced around. “You’re going to ruin the floor at that rate.”

She leaned casually against the kitchen doorway, arms folded as she watched me scrub the stone like it had personally offended her.

I dipped the brush back into the bucket.

“Then maybe you shouldn’t give prisoners cleaning supplies.”

Lena gave me a faint smile.

“Come to see the newest girl he took from her family?” I muttered.

Lena stepped inside. “You’re dramatic.”

“You look comfortable,” I said. “Guess being the Alpha’s favorite comes with benefits… or maybe being his favorite bedmate has its perks.”

That made Lena pause just enough for me to notice, then tilted her head slightly, a faint, unreadable smile playing at her lips.

“You don’t look like someone who’s locked in a dungeon,” I said.

Lena crouched down beside me. “You’re making assumptions.”

I finally looked up at her. “Am I?”

I gestured around the house. “You’re free to walk around. You’re well fed. You’re not bruised. So you either came here willingly…”

My eyes held her gaze.

“…or you stopped fighting.”

Something flickered in Lena’s expression.

“You think I’m like you?”

“I think you were like me,” I corrected.

I dipped the brush into the bucket again.

“And then you gave up.”

Lena watched me for a long moment. “You don’t know anything about me.”

“Maybe not. But I know I won’t end up like you.”

Lena’s eyebrow lifted slightly. “And what exactly am I?”

I let out a scoff. “A woman who decided surviving was easier if she spread her legs.”

The air in the kitchen felt frozen. Lena just stood there… shocked? Embarrassed? I don't know.

Then she laughed. Not angry. Not offended.

Almost amused.

“You really do have a loud mouth.”

“Say what you want, but I'm not going to be a sex slave like you are.”

“Is that what you think?”

“It’s what it looks like.”

Lena leaned closer suddenly. Too close.

Her fingers reached out and tilted my chin upward. “Watch your tongue,” Lena murmured softly.

“You might discover you’re wrong.”

I slapped her hand away. “Don’t touch me.”

Lena straightened, completely unbothered.

She was quiet for a moment, watching me go back to scrubbing like the conversation had not happened at all.

Then she sat down on the floor beside me. Just folded herself down onto the cold wet stone in her clean dress without a second thought and sat there like she had nowhere better to be.

I stared at her. "What are you doing?"

"Sitting."

"On a wet floor."

"Apparently." She glanced at the bucket. "You missed a spot."

I turned back to the floor. "Go away, Lena.”

She didn't move.

"I'm not his bedmate," she said finally. Quietly. Not defensive. Just a correction, offered once, like she had decided I deserved the truth even if I had not earned it.

"I never have been." She picked at a loose thread on her sleeve. "And I never will be.”

Lena stood, brushing stone dust from her dress.

"Finish the floors," she said. "Marla checks at midday.”

I dipped my brush back into the bucket, scrubbing harder.

Lena lingered a moment, then leaned closer again. “Lucian hasn’t eaten yet,” she said softly.

I froze mid-stroke.

“And… you’re going to cook for him.”

I turned sharply. “You should try asking someone who actually works here.”

Lena stepped closer again. Then her hand reached out, brushing a loose strand of my hair behind my ear.

“You really enjoy testing him, don’t you?”

I grabbed her wrist before she could pull away. “Or maybe you just like touching things that might bite you.”

Lena looked down at my hand gripping her wrist. Then she laughed softly. “He’s been in a very bad mood since you stabbed him.”

“You won’t want him checking for himself.”

I released her immediately. “I don’t care.”

“You might,” she said, straightening herself. “And it would be easier if you just prepare something now. Trust me, it’s safer than waiting.”

“I won’t be cooking for him.”

Lena shrugged, stepping back. “Suit yourself. Just… don’t make him come looking for excuses.”

A faint smirk tugged at her lips. “And if he does… he might come looking for something else to eat. Maybe even you.”

I froze, my hands gripping the brush tighter.

“Something else?”

She gave me that faint, unreadable smile and tilted her head.

“Think about it while you work,” she said lightly, turning toward the doorway.

Avery's POV.The hall was a 6,500 sq. ft. pillarless space with luxurious decor. The people arrived in a dozen, each wearing a new dress that would probably be discarded after the night was past.In the sky, the moon provided natural lighting into the hall, which held the event.Greetings were exchanged between packs. A sweet melody was drifting through the busy atmosphere. A heavy, intoxicating scent of alphas and powerful wolves hung in the air.I moved through the crowd like a ghost, the tray of glasses weighing down my trembling arms. My maid's uniform felt like a shroud, but the collar was what everyone saw. Then I saw them.At the far end of the long table of the Silver-Ridge Pack sat Aurelia and Elira, my sister Zara’s closest friends. We had never gotten along. And I knew, the moment our eyes met, they would try to humiliate me.Elira was dressed in a white flowing elegant gown with subtle jewelry and neatly styled hair. She was sipping wine and smiling at Aurelia.I tried to

Avery's POVThe collar irritated my skin. I could feel the prickly edges against my chin.Lucian looked at me with the eyes of a man who had finally found a cage strong enough for his most troublesome bird.“Go back to the kitchen,” he commanded, his voice vibrating through the metal against my throat.“Scrub the blood from your skin if you must, but don't you dare try to take off the collar.”I pushed myself up and managed a shaky step as I headed for the door when his voice stopped me.“One last thing. Don't be late for the preparations tomorrow. It's the lunar festival, and the Silver-Ridge pack will be here. The word made my heart pause for a second. Silver-Ridge. My former pack. The ones who cast us out. I turned to face him swiftly.“Silver-Ridge?” I repeated, unable to hide the bitterness in my voice. “What do they want here?”Lucian didn’t hesitate to answer me. “You'll find out tomorrow.I bit down on my lips so hard that I tasted blood. The collar felt heavy on my neck as I

Avery's POV I knocked his hand away. “Punish me? You have already done your worst. What's left?”A brief chuckle escaped him, his eyes locked on mine like magnets. “What's left? Everything that breaks you slowly.”“You're a murderer,” I shouted even though my voice broke. I don't know where the strength came from. Maybe it was from fear, anger, or the sight of that lifeless body, but I said it anyway.“The moon goddess will punish you for this. You don't get to take another wolf's life like that.”His face twisted into something between a sneer and a smirk. “I can kill you right now, and it wouldn't make a difference to me. That man down there…” he paused. “...wasn't a wolf. He was a traitor.”My breath hitched “He broke the pack's law,” he continued. “He knew the cost.” His voice turned cold and low. “To every action, there's a consequence with a price.”“That is why your father sold you. To clear his debts.” He paused, letting the words sink in. "You were his payment, just as dea

Avery's POV “You don’t need to pretend anymore,” he murmured. His voice seemed to crawl across the floor, a low, dry rasp that sounded like dead leaves skittering over stone. “Lucian already used you.”His grip tightened.“So stop acting like you’re untouched. Just give me a chance. Let me fuck you to stupor.”“I want you to choke on my cock, and then spread you wide with my fist.”I struggled against him, twisting hard, but his hold didn’t budge. Rage burned hotter than the fear crawling up my spine.“Don’t make a sound,” Raith breathed, tilting his head, his gaze sweeping over me like I was prey.“You’re insane!” I spat, the words muffled under his hand.A low chuckle left him.“You think I care?” Raith growled. “You’re already his. Avery's POV.I didn’t wait for her to answer. I pushed past her, hips swaying as I made my way into the kitchen. The clatter of trays and the scent of early firewood filled the room, but my mind was elsewhere.Marla stood at the center, issuing orders.“Thalia,” she called. I lifted my head and met the glare of the girl who had tried to bully me earlier. I gave her a daring look before dropping my head again.“You’ll wash the dishes today,” Marla continued. “Scrub the floors and disinfect the kitchen.”Thalia’s mouth fell open. “What? Ma’am… I was supposed to clean the Alpha’s room today.”“You don’t question me, Thalia,” Marla snapped. “Take what you are given unless you want extra chores.”Thalia stiffened. “Sorry, ma’am,” she muttered.“And who’s cleaning the Alpha’s room?”“No one. The Alpha doesn’t want anyone near his room today. Is that understood?”“Yes, ma’am,” we echoed.“Good. Avery, you know your duty—you’ll cook and serve the Alpha.”I stared a second longer, then nodded.
