~CLARA'S POV~

The flight didn't last long enough to quiet the panic in my chest.

By the time the matte-black helicopter touched down on the private skyscraper helipad, my fingers were practically frozen to the edges of the leather-bound contract.

I kept my shoulders squared as I walked through the hyper-modern, marble-clad lobby, ignoring the immediate, suffocating silence that fell over the reception desk the second my boots clicked across the polished floor. I was dressed in a sharp, structured charcoal suit—professional, armor-like, and a far cry from the silk evening gown I had been forced to sport on the auction stage hours prior. My neck burned beneath the high collar of my blouse, a weight reminding me of the heavy silver collar currently locked away in my bag.

"Clara Sterling?"

A sharp-eyed woman with a tight blonde bun and a tablet clipped to her hip stepped directly into my path, cutting off my stride. Her gaze flicked down my outfit, lingering for a second on my face before settling into a mask of professionalism.

"I am Cynthia, Mr. Volkov’s chief of staff," she stated, her tone dripping with passive-aggressive pity. "Follow me. Your onboarding has been expedited by the CEO himself."

We rode the private glass elevator straight to the top floor—the penthouse suite of corporate power. The layout was entirely open-concept, bounded by sleek minimalist lines, except for one massive, obsidian-framed glass office that overlooked the entire city skyline.

Cynthia pushed the heavy glass door open, stepping aside without another word. "Your desk is inside."

I walked in, my heels clicking softly against the dark hardwood. I stopped dead in my tracks. A sleek, minimalist desk had been positioned directly inside the room, placed perfectly parallel to Ares’s massive mahogany command center.

Sitting behind that command center was Ares Volkov.

He didn't look up immediately. He was signing a stack of legal documents, the custom fountain pen in his hand moving with precision. The morning sun cut through the floor-to-ceiling glass, highlighting the sharp, dangerous angles of his jaw and the massive breadth of his shoulders.

"Sit down, Clara," he murmured, his deep voice cutting through the silence without him ever lifting his eyes.

I took my seat behind the smaller desk, keeping my posture rigid. "This places me directly inside your private office, Mr. Volkov. Standard administrative protocol usually places assistants outside in the pool."

"You are not a standard assistant," Ares interrupted smoothly. He capped his pen, finally lifting his eyes to lock onto mine. "You are here to be seen. I want every board member, every investor, and every former ally of your father to see exactly where the Sterling heiress sits. Under my hand."

Before I could fire back a defiant response, the heavy glass door clicked open.

A heavy-set man in an expensive but poorly tailored suit walked in without knocking, carrying a leather portfolio. It was Marcus Vance—the CEO of Vance Shipping and one of the primary board members who had systematically voted to liquidate my father’s assets during the bankruptcy hearings.

"Ares, I have the final logistics report for the supply chain merger," Marcus blustered, stopping short as his eyes fell on me. His jaw slackened in shock. "Clara? What the hell are you doing here?"

"Miss Sterling is my new executive assistant, Marcus," Ares stated, his voice dropping into a dangerously calm register. He leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his fingers over his chest. "She will be managing all internal communications regarding the acquisition. If you have an issue with her presence, you have an issue with my management."

Marcus’s face flushed an ugly shade of crimson. He looked at me with disgust, sneering openly. "An assistant? Ares, she’s the daughter of a criminal fraud. Her family belongs in a federal cell, not a high-rise office. It's a joke that you're letting this failure breathe your air."

I gripped the edge of my desk as the humiliation burned through my chest. The urge to scream, to defend my father's honor and spit the truth in his face, tore at my throat.

But before I could speak, Ares stood up.

The movement was so sudden, so predatory, that Marcus instinctively took a step back. Ares walked around his desk, his towering frame completely blocking the morning light, his expression turning into something truly terrifying.

"Let me correct you, Marcus," Ares said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal hiss that made the air in the room freeze. "Clara Sterling works for me. Her time, her presence, and her labor belong exclusively to Volkov Global. If you insult my staff again in my office, I will systematically pull the funding from your shipping lines before the market closes today. Do I make myself clear?"

Marcus swallowed hard, his bravado instantly evaporating into thin air. "Clear, Ares. My apologies."

"Leave the portfolio on her desk and get out," Ares commanded.

Marcus hastily dropped the leather folder onto my desk, giving me one last venomous look before hurrying out of the office. The heavy glass door swung shut, leaving a heavy, suffocating silence in its wake.

I stared at the portfolio, my heart hammering violently against my ribs. I looked up at Ares, utterly confused by the sudden defense. "Why did you do that? You hate my family. You're the one who ruined us."

Ares walked over, leaning against the edge of my desk, dipping his face closer to mine until I could smell his familiar, intoxicating scent. "Make no mistake, Clara. I brought you here to ruin you. But I am the only one allowed to break you. If anyone else tries to touch what belongs to me, I will destroy them. Now, open the file."

I flipped open the leather folder, forcing my shaking hands to turn the pages. But as my eyes scanned the internal routing numbers for the new shipping logistics, my heart stopped beating entirely.

Buried at the bottom of the financial layout, disguised as a routine routing amendment, was the encrypted ledger code I had discovered on the helicopter ride: PROJECT ACER - LEDGER INITIATION.

This wasn't just an internal Volkov document. Marcus Vance’s company had been actively utilizing this exact code before my father’s empire went under. The betrayal didn't start with Ares. Marcus Vance had helped set the trap from the inside, and Ares was holding the ledger that proved it.

I closed the file slowly, lifting my eyes to meet Ares's icy stare. He was watching me, waiting to see if I would blink.

CLARA'S POV The icy air of the private server room did not compare to the sudden shock that paralyzed my veins. The bright green code of Project Acer glowed on the monitor, casting long, fractured shadows across Ares’s sharp face. My father’s encrypted digital signature stared back at me, an absolute proof of betrayal. "A partnership," I whispered. My voice was stripped of all volume, sounding small against the constant, robotic hum of the server racks. I turned slowly within his tight grip, my back pressing hard against the cold edge of the master terminal. "My father did not lose his company to a rival. He handed it to you. You were partners." Ares did not flinch. His hand remained firmly planted on the metal console right beside my hip, pinning me into the narrow space between his body and the machine. His eyes were like polished flint, absorbing the full weight of my realization without a single hint of remorse. "Edward Sterling was a visionary, Clara," Ares murmured. His

CLARA'S POV The silence that followed Marcus Vance’s severed phone call was heavier than any physical weight. The dial tone buzzed on the speakerbox, a flat, robotic drone that seemed to stretch the room into an impossible, tight vacuum. He licensed it directly to Volkov Global. The words repeated in my mind, each repetition chipping away at the foundation of everything I believed. I didn't move. My hands stayed resting on the edge of the mahogany desk, my knuckles turning white against the polished wood. My father’s arrest, the destruction of the Sterling empire, and my own forced contract with Ares—it had all built toward a single narrative of a ruthless billionaire taking everything from a defenseless family. But a defense system doesn't get licensed by accident. Slowly, I turned my head to look at the man standing beside me. Ares hadn't moved an inch. His hands were still flat on the desk, his massive chest rising and falling in a slow, controlled rhythm. His eyes weren't on

CLARA'S POV The 48-hour clock began its final countdown at midnight. By 3:00 AM. I sat at the master console in Ares’s obsidian office, wearing an immaculate black suit. The high, structured collar completely hid the heavy silver band around my neck. The air inside the locked study smelled of stale espresso and the cold, metallic ozone of hyper-threaded servers. Ares stood directly behind my chair. He did not touch me, but his presence was a heavy anchor in the quiet room. His shadow fell over the keyboard, trapping me within his personal space. I could feel the intense heat of his body radiating against my back. It kept me sharp. It kept me awake. "Vance has taken the bait, little bird," Ares murmured. His deep voice was a low, gravelly vibration right near my ear. "Look at the volume metrics." On the main monitor, the trading logs for the ghost holding companies were lighting up in a chaotic green. These were the specific shell corporations containing the toxic debt of the

  • BOUGHT BY THE RUTHLESS CEO    CHAPTER 18: THE PSYCHOLOGICAL TOLL

CLARA'S POV The physical threat of Marcus Vance’s remote wipe was nothing compared to the sudden shattering of my emotional armor. The performance had cost me too much. Pretending to break, pretending to cry, and feeling Ares’s possessive hands mapping my body for the microphone had pushed me completely over the edge. "Get back to the terminal, Clara," Ares ordered, his voice no longer loud for the microphone, but dropping into a dangerously sharp whisper. "Stop the deletion." My hands shook violently as I forced my fingers back onto the keyboard. The terminal screen was a cascading waterfall of bleeding red code as Vance’s remote override tore through our system. I forced my mind to focus on the data architecture, typing frantically and deploying every defensive firewall my father had ever taught me to build. Click. Click. Click. "I’ve isolated the local sector," I breathed, my voice raw as a line of green code finally cut through the sea of red. "The primary Project Acer

CLARA'S POV The microphone stayed live under the mahogany desk. It felt like a ticking bomb, waiting to catch a single wrong word or a breath that sounded too rehearsed. Ares stepped away from the console, his movements fluid and natural. He didn't look at me as he walked toward the bar across the room. He poured himself two fingers of scotch, the ice clinking sharply against the crystal glass. "You are moving too slowly, Clara," he said aloud. "The data migration should have been completed ten minutes ago." I kept my eyes on the secondary monitor, my fingers hovering over the keyboard. I had to play my part perfectly. Marcus Vance was on the other end of that frequency, listening for a crack in my composure, waiting to hear the proud Clara Sterling finally beg. "The encryption protocols on the Vance logistics network are tighter than anticipated, Mr. Volkov," I replied, my voice holding a faint, practiced tremor. "I am bypassing the third-party firewall now." Ares walke

CLARA'S POV The tiny piece of plastic felt like a block of dry ice against my fingertips. I didn't pull my hand away immediately. I kept my fingers pressed against the smooth, cold casing of the microphone, my heart hammering against my ribs. Marcus Vance hadn't just framed me. He had breached the inner sanctum. He was listening to us. I kept my face completely blank, refusing to let the panic show in my eyes. Ares was still standing near the window, his eyes tracking my sudden stillness. He knew my movements too well; he knew the exact micro-second my breathing changed. I didn't speak. Instead, I looked up, caught his gaze, and slowly tapped the index finger of my free hand against the top of the mahogany desk. Three sharp, rhythmic thuds. Then, I pointed a finger downward, directly toward the space between my knees. Ares didn't blink. The subtle shift in his posture was almost invisible, but I saw the muscles in his jaw tighten. He walked back to the desk, his movements fluid
