LOGINDamien's POV
I stood before the French window, staring at the city of New York, sipping the wine from the glass.
My mom was seated a few meters away, a cigarette in hand. The doctor has just discharged her from the hospital after a few weeks of illness.
I was glad because my mother means the world to me and I would never let anything happen to her.
“Damien.” She called. “I'm glad you have finally decided to move on with Maya. It's the best decision you've made.”
My face remained expressionless.
She continued, “The engagement party tomorrow is going to be lavish. New York has never seen what's coming.”
“I planned just the best for you, darling.”
After sipping from the glass, I spoke calmly without turning my gaze, “You should prioritize your health, mom.”
“Nonsense!” She brushed it off. “I made sure to hire the best event planner and I oversaw every single arrangement down to the kind of flowers to be used.”
“It's my only son's engagement.” She declared, “Nothing matters most.”
I remained mute.
“Why are you quiet? Is something wrong, darling?”
Before I could reply, she added, “Don't be worried about the engagement. Those enemies of yours won't have the guts to ruin it. I have already stationed thirty bodyguards in advance.”
“It's just an engagement party, mom.” I said with a deep, reverberating voice.
“Well, seeing how well your union with Maya has made the company's reputation skyrocket, I'm not wrong to imagine a thousand and one things that could go wrong tomorrow.”
“In fact, to make you happy, I'd ordered lilies from the UK. Fresh and well-scented. They've always been your favorite, right?”
I paused.
Lilies were never my favorite.
They used to be Eva's favorite. A few months into our engagement, I'd told my mother to have fresh lilies ordered from the UK just to surprise Eva.
She never got the surprise, as she broke my trust by trying to ruin the very company my mother and I struggled so hard to build.
I did not want to believe it, until she confessed to it.
Since then, I've been unable to love anyone else.
“Yes.” I answered, to avoid any more pressure.
“Great!” She laughed, “I knew you'd love it! You deserve only the best, Damien, and Maya is the only person right for you.”
I sensed where she was heading and said, “Isn't it past your bedtime?”
“If that girl had not shown her true colors, everything we struggled to build would have been taken away.” She lamented.
I turned just then, my enchanting green eyes locking on her frame.
“You need adequate rest, mom. Let's go up to your bedroom.”
“Even though I tried to warn you many times, you blindly trusted that woman over your own mother!”
I seethed.
“You don't have to remind me of the pain I caused you, mom!” I blew up, “I know I loved the wrong person and it nearly cost us everything but I've apologized to you severally.”
I added, “I am even marrying Maya just to make you happy and forget whatever happened in the past!”
She rose from the couch and tossed the cigarette away, “I will keep reminding you, darling. It will serve as a huge lesson to you for the rest of your life.”
“You have to always listen to me, your mother. I raised you with no damn help from your father! Everything you have is as a result of my sweat and blood!”
“And the fact that you nearly threw that at the feet of that woman makes me wonder what must have happened to us if she had not been found out.”
“She's in jail, there's no need to keep living in the past.” I told her, lowering the wine glass on the center table.
“I'm not living in the past, Damien. I only want the best for you and reminding you of the near catastrophe you caused us will only keep you on your toes.”
Suddenly, the door dashed open and Maya stepped in, dressed in a short dress that clung tightly to her straight frame.
“Discussing Eva Cole again, are we?” She walked in with a smirk on her face.
“It's forbidden to mention her name in this house.” I said firmly.
Maya stopped in front of me and placed her hand on my chest, fixing my tie.
“I know you still carry the pain of her betrayal in you, honey, but it's been three years.” She sighed and added, “You need to face it and deal with it.”
“I have moved on, Maya. Discussing that traitor and mentioning her name feels like torture coming from my mother.” I replied.
“It shouldn't, darling.” She licked her lips. “Tomorrow's our engagement. The whole world is talking about us. Eva's name shouldn't cause any raccour.”
I wanted to speak but a lump remained in my throat.
I rubbed my temple and resigned, “See you tomorrow.”
I left the house.

“Thank you so much, mother!” Maya held Margret Hale in her arms, “You're the best!”
Their glasses collided, “Of course I'm the best, dear. I know what I want for my son and it's definitely not that low class girl.”
“I wonder how she's doing in jail,” Maya thought aloud and added, “Washing the restroom, probably!”
They burst out laughing crazily.
“Do you think she must have heard of my engagement to Damien?” Maya asked through fits of laughter.
Margaret replied, “I'll have pictures of the engagement sent to her privately in jail. She can't afford not to see how glamorous it will be!”
Maya blushed happily, “Damien is mine at last. How dare the bitch think she could marry him!”
“Save your emotions dear. You need it for tomorrow's party.” Margaret advised.
“You're right, mother.” She pursed her lips.
“Tomorrow, the whole world will watch Damien Hale become mine!”
“You can't go there, Eva!” The young boy held her arm.Eva blinked her doll eyes, as she whined. “It's just to see the waterfalls.”The young boy looked perturbed. “Your dad had forbidden us from going there. You know how he is.”Still, Eva shook her head. She remained adamant. “I want to see the waterfalls!”The young boy sighed, trapped in a dilemma.Seeing that he was hesitant, Eva grabbed his hand, flashing her million watts smile.“C’mon, we won't take long. We'll be back before anyone notices.”The young boy looked at Eva's fingers entwined with his and back at her baby blue eyes. He couldn't resist it.“Fine.” He finally gave in. Eva threw her arms around him.“Thank you, Moon!”Suddenly, Eva awoke with a gasp, breathing heavily.“Are you okay?” Dana was by her side in a jiffy.Eva shut her eyes and opened them again, just as a headache hit her.“I knew it was a bad idea for you to attend that party!” She began to rant as she brought the hot soup to Eva. “Tell me, what happened
Enzo's POV“Drive.” I ordered with Eva breathing soundly in my arms.I thought back at what must have happened back there. Was he really trying to abduct her? How did she fall unconscious? Is it really the alcohol? She shifted slightly in my arms. I adjusted my arm to make her comfortable, staring down at her face.“How did you love a man like Damien?” I mumbled underneath my breath, as I brushed the hair off her face. The ringtone of my phone interrupted my thoughts. I answered.“Uncle.”“Where are you?”“I'm on my way to the house.” I replied. The call ended shortly after. It was difficult to force my uncle to face the Hales. I've always wondered why he hesitated each time.He was the one person I trusted the most in this world, even though he wasn't by my side all through, he always looked after me and even catered for me when he wasn't this wealthy.I turned my thoughts back to the beautiful woman in my arms. My past life is too bleak to think of. Eva made my teenage years one of
Enzo's POVDancing with Eva and holding her so close felt like a dream come true. I was grateful I found her just when that scumbag abandoned her.We used to be childhood sweethearts, just before she had an accident and lost her memory. I never got to see her again until I came to New York.I twirled her round and lowered her with my hand supporting her bare back while steadying her with my hand around her thigh. My moves, my grip, my soft gaze was all to infuriate the one person standing at a distance watching us.It was just how I felt when, after many years of searching for her, I found her married to him with no memories of me.I'd left, enraged and only returned to strike at the right time. She might have lost her memories of those years but I don't intend to let her go again. As the music slowly came to an end, I caught the frustrated look on Damien's face from the corner of my eyes.He took everything away from me. My mother. My chance of having a perfect family. And even the o
Margaret Hale rushed into the dimly lit room, shutting the door hastily behind her. She stopped before the middle-aged man, whose back was to her as he lit a cigarette.“How could you show your face here, Michael?!” She shrieked, the veins clearly visible on her forehead. “Didn't we agree never to cross paths again?”Michael turned round and came face-to-face with Margaret. “After so many years, this is the first thing you say to me?”“Quit it, Michael. You know we were never supposed to see each other again.”Michael chuckled. “We did agree never to see each other again, but your son did not.”Margaret's eyes widened. “What are you talking about?”“There's no one else here, Margaret. No need to play dumb.” Michael replied as he drew in another huff of smoke.“Damien is my only son.” She said firmly.“I did try to tell you this years ago, Margaret, but you constantly rejected my every means to reach you.”“We agreed never to cross paths.” She repeated. “Why would you try to reach me a
Eva's POV“The cops are on their way.” Margaret added. “I have called them to pick up this thief who escaped from jail!”I stared at Enzo. Is this why he wanted me to change my features? I bit my lips.Maya came and pushed me, breaking Damien's grip on me. Enzo rushed to my side, preventing me from falling.Damien reached out but was stopped by Maya whose face had turned beet red.“I know why you're here.” Maya smirked. “After hearing of my engagement to Damien, you thought escaping jail for a while and showing your face to him will save you.”She scoffed. “You're wrong, Eva, because you're going right back to that cell where you belong!”Just then, sirens could be heard from a distance. Soon, the police trooped in.Damien stopped them. “You can't take her.”“Move away, Damien and let the police do their job.” Margaret said in a stern voice.Maya was the perfect definition of anger. She grabbed Damien's arm. “What are you doing? This woman tried to destroy everything you and mom worke
Eva's POV“Are you sure you're ready to face them?” Enzo's thick voice interrupted my thoughts once the car halted in front of the engagement venue. He turned to me, his emerald eyes sparkling in the dark.I looked away.“I know how close you were with Damien Hale.” He continued. “It's possible that you still have–”“I don't have feelings for him anymore.” I said, cutting him off. “I already told you that I'd rather they recognize the face of whom they ruined years ago.”I picked up the purse lying by my side with a determined expression on my face. “I can't wait to see them.”With that I stepped out of the car. After some seconds, Enzo stepped out and stood by my side. He held out his hand.I sighed deeply, then took it in mine. As we neared the entrance, people began to cast gazes at me, followed by whispers and then loud murmurs. Not long after, the entrance was blocked by paparazzi.{Are you really Eva Cole?}{Eva Cole, have you come here to ruin the engagement of your ex-husband?
