Eva's POV
Clank!
The warden's baton hit my cell. I looked up, expecting another taunt or to be dragged out and whipped for rules I never disobeyed.
Instead, she said, “You have a visitor.”
I stepped out of the cell in my tattered prison uniform that clinged to my lean frame. My hair fell messily over my face as I followed the warden to the visiting area, wondering who the visitor was.
Except for my best friend Dana and my brother, Caleb, no one else has visited in the past three years. Of course no one else could visit, I was an orphan and the man I loved put me in here.
I stopped upon seeing the handsome man in front of me. He was oddly familiar yet I couldn't place where I'd seen him.
A strand of his jet black hair hung above his brows, casting a casual and composed aura around him.
His piercing green eyes met my blue ones at once.
“You need to sit, Eva.” He spoke, his voice reverberating in the cold room.
“Who are you?”
He tilted his head lazily and said, “There's only one way to find out.”
I suspected that he could be one of Margaret's thugs. Ever since my ex-boyfriend mother, Margaret, framed me for a crime I did not commit, she has stopped at nothing to harass me even while in jail.
I forced my legs to move and sat down on the opposite chair.
“I'm here to get you out.” He mumbled underneath his breath. “I know you didn't do it.”
Tears glossed my eyes. His words instinctively brought memories of the night I was accused of embezzling funds from the Hale Group.
No one believed me. Not even Damien Hale, the man who claimed to love me.
I tried to prove myself innocent but Margaret had my brother abducted, forcing me to admit to a crime I did not commit.
“How?” My voice broke as I spoke. “How do you intend to do that? The Hale family is more powerful than you think.”
I paused and added, “I've served three years of the fifteen I was sentenced to. Isn't it too late?”
He reached out and took my hands in his.
“I just need you to trust me, Eva.”
My name on his lips was soft and assuring. A glimmer of hope basked in my heart. Nothing felt more fulfilling than stepping out of here and revenging my unjust treatment.
“I already have everything in place for your release.”
My eyes widened. “Really?”
He nodded. “All you have to do is marry me, Eva.”
At that, I slowly slipped my hand out of his grip. He leaned back on his chair, his sharp, green eyes searching my face.
“I don't know you. In fact, why are you willing to help me?”
“The name is Enzo,” he answered, “I've been hurt in the past by the Hales. I'm only strong enough now to get back at them.”
He paused and added, “After witnessing how they ruined your life, I decided to lend a helping hand. Together, we can bring them down.”
I shook my head and stood up abruptly, my earlier hopeful expression gone.
“Marrying you is too much to ask, Enzo. After Damien's betrayal, getting close to another man is certainly something I wouldn't do again.”
“Eva—”
“I'm sorry.” I cut him off, “I appreciate your help but I can't take your offer. I'll do my sentence and get my revenge when I can.”
I turned and was walking away when he spoke.
“Your brother won't be alive by then.”
I stopped and turned abruptly, my countenance changing almost immediately.
“What are you talking about?”
He rose. His height is about 6ft. His build reminded me so much about Damien that if I didn't know better, I'd have thought they were brothers from the same family.
He slipped his phone from his pocket and played a video.
I watched my brother being beaten by several thugs, his face was badly injured. My hand instinctively went to my lips. My best friend, Dana, was tied to a chair, unconscious.
They had only come to visit me yesterday.
My gaze shot up. “How did you get this? Where is my brother? Are you trying to blackmail me?”
“Eva, your brother was abducted by Margaret Hale.” He dropped the bombshell.
“How could she?!” I became instantly worried as I began to pace the small room, “I already took the fall! I've been here, silent, for three years! What does she want?”
“They want to do the exact same thing they did to you three years ago, Eva.”
I glanced up, “Frame him?”
He nodded. “Your best friend too.”
Shivers ran down my spine.
“After embezzling more funds, Margaret has decided to use Dana and Caleb as the scapegoat, considering how easy it is.”
“Her thugs are currently torturing them to confess to the crime and even add that you orchestrated it.”
“What?” My tone was disgust.
“Think about it, Eva. With that your sentence could be increased, or worse, you could be sentenced to death.”
He added, “And the only family you have left? Probably the same fate.”
He tucked his phone back into his pocket.
“Considering how easily she thwarted the hands of the law and had you confess to a crime you did not commit, imagine what she'd do just to ensure you stay silent forever.”
My breath caught in my throat.
He was right.
“You're nobody against the Hales, Eva. Marrying me will give you the social status you need. They will have to go through me to get to you.”
“Simply getting you out of jail does not stop them from putting you back. That's the reason for our marriage.”
Picking up his suitcase with a resolved expression, he said, “Perhaps I thought too far and overstepped my boundaries.”
“I will keep my hands to myself and take my leave now.”
He turned and walked towards the door.
“Wait.”
“You can't go there, Eva!” The young boy held her arm.Eva blinked her doll eyes, as she whined. “It's just to see the waterfalls.”The young boy looked perturbed. “Your dad had forbidden us from going there. You know how he is.”Still, Eva shook her head. She remained adamant. “I want to see the waterfalls!”The young boy sighed, trapped in a dilemma.Seeing that he was hesitant, Eva grabbed his hand, flashing her million watts smile.“C’mon, we won't take long. We'll be back before anyone notices.”The young boy looked at Eva's fingers entwined with his and back at her baby blue eyes. He couldn't resist it.“Fine.” He finally gave in. Eva threw her arms around him.“Thank you, Moon!”Suddenly, Eva awoke with a gasp, breathing heavily.“Are you okay?” Dana was by her side in a jiffy.Eva shut her eyes and opened them again, just as a headache hit her.“I knew it was a bad idea for you to attend that party!” She began to rant as she brought the hot soup to Eva. “Tell me, what happened
Enzo's POV“Drive.” I ordered with Eva breathing soundly in my arms.I thought back at what must have happened back there. Was he really trying to abduct her? How did she fall unconscious? Is it really the alcohol? She shifted slightly in my arms. I adjusted my arm to make her comfortable, staring down at her face.“How did you love a man like Damien?” I mumbled underneath my breath, as I brushed the hair off her face. The ringtone of my phone interrupted my thoughts. I answered.“Uncle.”“Where are you?”“I'm on my way to the house.” I replied. The call ended shortly after. It was difficult to force my uncle to face the Hales. I've always wondered why he hesitated each time.He was the one person I trusted the most in this world, even though he wasn't by my side all through, he always looked after me and even catered for me when he wasn't this wealthy.I turned my thoughts back to the beautiful woman in my arms. My past life is too bleak to think of. Eva made my teenage years one of
Enzo's POVDancing with Eva and holding her so close felt like a dream come true. I was grateful I found her just when that scumbag abandoned her.We used to be childhood sweethearts, just before she had an accident and lost her memory. I never got to see her again until I came to New York.I twirled her round and lowered her with my hand supporting her bare back while steadying her with my hand around her thigh. My moves, my grip, my soft gaze was all to infuriate the one person standing at a distance watching us.It was just how I felt when, after many years of searching for her, I found her married to him with no memories of me.I'd left, enraged and only returned to strike at the right time. She might have lost her memories of those years but I don't intend to let her go again. As the music slowly came to an end, I caught the frustrated look on Damien's face from the corner of my eyes.He took everything away from me. My mother. My chance of having a perfect family. And even the o
Margaret Hale rushed into the dimly lit room, shutting the door hastily behind her. She stopped before the middle-aged man, whose back was to her as he lit a cigarette.“How could you show your face here, Michael?!” She shrieked, the veins clearly visible on her forehead. “Didn't we agree never to cross paths again?”Michael turned round and came face-to-face with Margaret. “After so many years, this is the first thing you say to me?”“Quit it, Michael. You know we were never supposed to see each other again.”Michael chuckled. “We did agree never to see each other again, but your son did not.”Margaret's eyes widened. “What are you talking about?”“There's no one else here, Margaret. No need to play dumb.” Michael replied as he drew in another huff of smoke.“Damien is my only son.” She said firmly.“I did try to tell you this years ago, Margaret, but you constantly rejected my every means to reach you.”“We agreed never to cross paths.” She repeated. “Why would you try to reach me a
Eva's POV“The cops are on their way.” Margaret added. “I have called them to pick up this thief who escaped from jail!”I stared at Enzo. Is this why he wanted me to change my features? I bit my lips.Maya came and pushed me, breaking Damien's grip on me. Enzo rushed to my side, preventing me from falling.Damien reached out but was stopped by Maya whose face had turned beet red.“I know why you're here.” Maya smirked. “After hearing of my engagement to Damien, you thought escaping jail for a while and showing your face to him will save you.”She scoffed. “You're wrong, Eva, because you're going right back to that cell where you belong!”Just then, sirens could be heard from a distance. Soon, the police trooped in.Damien stopped them. “You can't take her.”“Move away, Damien and let the police do their job.” Margaret said in a stern voice.Maya was the perfect definition of anger. She grabbed Damien's arm. “What are you doing? This woman tried to destroy everything you and mom worke
Eva's POV“Are you sure you're ready to face them?” Enzo's thick voice interrupted my thoughts once the car halted in front of the engagement venue. He turned to me, his emerald eyes sparkling in the dark.I looked away.“I know how close you were with Damien Hale.” He continued. “It's possible that you still have–”“I don't have feelings for him anymore.” I said, cutting him off. “I already told you that I'd rather they recognize the face of whom they ruined years ago.”I picked up the purse lying by my side with a determined expression on my face. “I can't wait to see them.”With that I stepped out of the car. After some seconds, Enzo stepped out and stood by my side. He held out his hand.I sighed deeply, then took it in mine. As we neared the entrance, people began to cast gazes at me, followed by whispers and then loud murmurs. Not long after, the entrance was blocked by paparazzi.{Are you really Eva Cole?}{Eva Cole, have you come here to ruin the engagement of your ex-husband?
