LOGINChloe's POV
After closing hours, I practically bolted out of the school gates, keeping my distance from both Maya and Tristan, completely consumed by the thought of Friday night.
“Kane’s house,” I muttered. The biggest party of the year. I was going to walk in there on Jaxon’s arm, and no one was going to stop me.
When I finally reached home, I pushed the front door open, expecting the usual quiet atmosphere. Instead, Maya's mom was standing by the counter, sorting through a stack of ironed dress shirts, while her dad was on the phone, speaking rapidly in Japanese with a massive smile on his face.
The smell of traditional celebratory sukiyaki was already in the air.
"Ah, Maya! You're home," her mom said, turning around with a bright, beaming smile. She wiped her hands on her apron and rushed over to me. "Wonderful news. Your father just found out today, his company is giving him the regional promotion he has been working toward for five years!"
"Oh. Wow. Great," I muttered, trying to sound enthusiastic while dropping the heavy backpack onto the floor. "Congrats."
"They are holding a special recognition dinner and conference at the corporate hall," her mom continued, her eyes shining with pride. "The executives want the whole family there to support him. It is very big honor, Maya. It’s this Friday afternoon, right after school. From about 4:00 to 5:00, and then a family banquet right after."
My stomach dropped. The happiness and joy I had carried since lunch vanished.
"Wait, Friday?" I stammered, my voice rising. "Right after school? No. Uh-uh. I can't go."
Maya’s dad paused his phone conversation, lowering the receiver to stare at me. Her mom’s smile completely faltered, her brow furrowing in confusion.
"What do you mean you can't go? Maya, this is your father’s biggest night. We have to be there to support him."
"I have plans," I insisted, crossing my arms defensively. "Important plans. I can't just cancel them."
"Plans? What plans could be more important than your family?" her mom asked, her tone shifting from excited to deeply disappointed.
Frustration flared up in my chest. Over the last couple of weeks, I had actually been trying hard to learn Japanese. At first, it was just a survival tactic so I wouldn't get caught, but then I started practicing more just so I could communicate better and navigate Maya's life without constant suspicion. But right now, the stress was boiling over, and the words tumbled out of my mouth in a sharp, defensive mix of the language I’d been forcing myself to study.
"行けません!(I can't go!)" I snapped, my accent clunky but the anger behind it was crystal clear.
"本当に無理です。(It's truly impossible.) I already said yes to someone else! Why do I always have to do what everyone else wants?"
Maya’s dad slammed the phone down on the cradle. "摩耶、その態度は何だ? (Maya, what is that attitude?)" he demanded, his voice echoing off the kitchen walls. "家族のお祝いだぞ。(This is a family celebration.) You will come with us, and you will support this family. There is no discussion."
"No!" I yelled back, reverting to English as my temper completely took over. "You don't understand! This is my life, and I am not ruining my Friday night for some boring corporate dinner! I'm not going!"
"Maya!" her mother shouted, stepping forward, her face pale with shock. "How can you be so selfish? This is your father's hard work!"
"I don't care!" I screamed.
I grabbed my backpack from the floor, spun on my heel, and sprinted up the stairs before they could say another word.
I slammed Maya's bedroom door so hard the framed sketches on her wall rattled. I threw myself onto the bed, trembling with absolute rage. They were going to ruin everything. Jaxon was expecting me. If I missed this party, the illusion would shatter, and I’d be stuck back at the bottom of the social ladder forever.
I wasn't going to let them lock me down. I was going to that party on Friday night, even if I had to sneak out of the window to do it.
But as I lay there, staring at Maya's closet full of oversized flannels and baggy jeans, a horrific realization hit me. I couldn't go to Kane’s house looking like a total charity case. If I was going to debut as Jaxon's girl, I needed to look the part. I needed a killer outfit, professional makeup, and hair supplies. I needed my old resources.
A slow, scheming smile crept across my face as a perfect solution formed in my mind.
I grabbed Maya’s phone, unlocked it with an aggressive swipe, and dialed a number I knew by heart. It rang three times before the line picked up.
"Chloe?" Maya’s voice came through the speaker, sounding exhausted and tense in my original, beautiful voice. "Why are you calling me?"
"Shut up and listen to me, Maya," I interrupted. I leaned against the headboard, tapping my nails against the mattress. "I need you to do something for me. Go into my walk in closet. Look inside the top drawer of the jewelry vanity, right behind the velvet watch box."
There was a long pause on the other end. "What? Why?"
"Because," I smirked, my eyes gleaming with total defiance in the dark bedroom. "You’re going to take my black credit card out of that drawer, and you are going to bring it over to your house for me tonight. Don't be late.”

Chloe's POV By the time the glowing digits on Maya’s alarm clock shifted to 9:00 PM, I was practically vibrating with impatience. I sat cross legged on the edge of the mattress, my eyes glued to the window.A faint rustle from the bushes below caught my attention. A figure in my favorite oversized cashmere coat emerged into the dim moonlight, looking completely out of place. It was Maya.A smile touched my lips. I didn’t dare head downstairs toward the front door. Back at my real house, whenever I got into a fight with my parents, I would lock myself away and stay completely out of sight. It was a flawless strategy, the silence always made them feel guilty, and within a few hours, they’d be knocking on my door to apologize and give me whatever I wanted. I figured the same rule applied here. If I stayed hidden in this bedroom, Maya's parents would eventually think they had pushed me too hard and come up to make peace.I slid the window pane upward, and leaned over the sill. "Up here,

Chloe’s POVI was humming to myself as I walked down the narrow hallway toward the library, lightly tapping my fingers against the customized journal Jaxon had given me. I felt like I was floating on a cloud that no one at Northview High could touch.Suddenly, a hand shot out from the shadows of the old janitor's closet, gripping my forearm tightly and pulling me into the alcove beneath the stairwell.I gasped, ready to scream, but the words died in my throat when I saw who it was.It was Maya. Her face was an expression of pure rage. Before I could even open my mouth to snap at her for touching me, she shoved a piece of paper directly into my chest."Chloe, what the hell are you doing to my results?" Maya hissed, her voice was sharp. I blinked, smoothing out the paper. It was a graded AP Calculus quiz. At the top, written in glaring, aggressive red ink, was a massive, circled D-."Oh," I muttered, tossing my head back carelessly. "That. Look, your teacher gives way too many trick ques
Chloe's POV The front door clicked shut behind me. I practically floated up the creaking wooden stairs, my hands still warm from where Jaxon had squeezed them goodbye. I slipped into the bedroom and threw myself backward onto the mattress, staring up at the ceiling tiles with a massive, unstoppable smile spreading across my face. The date had been flawless. Jaxon had been perfect. He didn't care about the rumors. He was falling for me, even while I was trapped in this ugly body.A sharp, familiar chime shattered the silence. I rolled over, grabbing Maya’s phone off the cluttered nightstand, expecting a sweet post date text from Jax. Instead, Tristan’s name popped up on the screen. My fingers tensed, ready to read another furious, judgmental paragraph.Tristan: Hey Maya. Look, I’ve been sitting on my porch thinking about what happened, and I just wanted to say I’m really sorry for how I behaved tonight. You were right. You have every right to be friends with whoever you wish. We’re jus
Chloe's POV We pulled into the gravel parking lot of the retro diner across town, my heart was beating so fast I could feel it pulsing in my ears."Here we are," Jax said, killing the engine and turning to look at me. "Far enough from Northview that we don't have to deal with anyone's drama.""It's perfect," I said, offering him a wide smile. I had spent nearly two hours in the bathroom trying to tame her frizzy hair into a neat half up style, and while her dark green turtleneck wasn't exactly high fashion, the way Jax looked at me made all the frustration melt away.Inside, the diner felt entirely lived in and cozy. The sweet scent of maple syrup, fried chicken, and warm vinyl booths filled the air. A classic jukebox played a soft melody in the corner. Jax guided me toward a booth tucked far into the back corner, pulling out the table slightly so I could slide in.The next two hours that followed, was the most fun I’d had since the soul swap happened. When the waitress brought out a
Chloe’s POVMaya stormed out of the room after yelling nonstop. I was only sad cause she had to take my dog with her."It's fine," I whispered to myself, my voice trembling with a mix of leftover adrenaline and pure stubbornness. "She's just bitter. She doesn't get it."I leaned back against the pillows, staring blankly at the ceiling tiles. Who cared if she was mad? She was living in my beautiful house, sleeping in my huge bed, and driving my car. The least she could do was let me find a silver lining in this nightmare. If we were stuck like this forever, I wasn't going to spend it miserable and invisible like she did.Suddenly, the smartphone resting on the cluttered desk buzzed, the vibration cutting through the quiet room.I scrambled across the mattress, snatching the device up. My breath caught when I saw the lock screen. It was a text from Jaxon.Jaxon: Hey Maya, Just wanted to talk to you for a bit, could I stop by at your place, if that's cool with you ofc.He wanted to come
