William returned from the office with an uneasy feeling that had been lingering since the afternoon. Throughout the meeting, his mind had never truly focused. The numbers on the presentation screen seemed blurred, the client’s voice sounded distant, and for some reason, the image of Camelia’s face that morning kept appearing in his thoughts.

He tried to convince himself that it was only temporary. Maybe Camelia was really not feeling well. Maybe she was just too tired.

But as the night drew closer, the restlessness inside him grew stronger.

His car stopped in the apartment parking lot. William stepped out quickly, his suit jacket hanging neatly over his shoulder, but his mind was in chaos. He entered the elevator and stared at his reflection in the mirror. He looked uneasy.

The elevator doors opened.

He walked toward his unit and entered the door code quickly.

Click.

The door opened.

William stepped inside—and immediately froze.

The room felt… empty.

Not just quiet.

But empty.

There was no sound of the television. No faint trace of Camelia’s perfume lingering in the air. No work bag resting on the sofa.

“Camelia?” he called out, half loudly.

No answer.

He walked to the bedroom and pushed the door open quickly.

William felt his heart beating faster. He opened the wardrobe.

Empty.

The rows of dresses that were usually neatly arranged were gone. The work blazers Camelia always wore to important meetings had disappeared as well.

“No…” he muttered softly.

He opened the dressing table drawer.

There were no pieces of jewelry. None of Camelia’s small belongings.

William stepped back, his breathing beginning to quicken. He walked back to the living room, checking the kitchen, the bathroom, the balcony—as if hoping Camelia would suddenly appear from a corner of the room.

But there was no one there.

“Camelia, where are you?” he called again, louder this time.

Silence answered him.

Panic began to spread slowly, gripping his chest. His hand reached into his suit pocket, pulling out his phone in a hurried motion. He dialed his assistant’s number.

The call connected.

“Hello, Sir?”

“Find Mrs. Camelia. Find her no matter what!” William’s voice sounded tense, far from the confident tone he usually had.

His assistant paused for a moment before replying, “Yes, Sir. We will find Madam.”

“Use all available connections. Contact the driver, contact the apartment security, check the airport, check hotels. I want to know where she is right now!”

“Yes, Sir.”

The call ended.

William stood still in the middle of the living room. His heart was pounding irregularly. He tried to calm himself, but his mind was filled with worst-case possibilities.

Did Camelia find out something?

Did she see something?

Suddenly, the image of last night appeared in his head—the bridal suite, Serena, the words he had spoken without thinking.

William swallowed hard.

“Does Camelia know that I cheated with her best friend?” he muttered softly.

The question felt like a hard slap.

All this time, he had been certain he could control the situation. He was sure Camelia loved him too much to leave. Too dependent on him to truly walk away from everything.

But this empty apartment said otherwise.

His phone suddenly rang, making him flinch.

Serena’s name appeared on the screen.

William stared at it for a few seconds before finally answering.

“Hello?” His voice sounded flat.

“Darling,” Serena’s spoiled voice came from the other end, “I want to sleep with you tonight.”

Usually, a sentence like that would make William smile in satisfaction. Usually, he would respond in a teasing tone.

But tonight, his body felt tense instead.

He looked around the empty room once again.

“Not tonight,” he replied shortly.

Serena sounded surprised. “Why? Isn’t Camelia not feeling well? You said she wouldn’t suspect anything.”

William let out a rough breath. “She’s not in the apartment.”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

“She left.”

“William, don’t move closer—there’s an unstable current in the outer line!”The shout came too late.A sharp burst of energy crackled through the relay junction, lighting up the control panel in a sudden flash of blue-white light.William staggered back, one hand gripping the metal frame to steady himself.“I’m fine,” he said quickly. “Shut down the secondary feed—now!”Camelia was already at the console.“Doing it!”Her fingers moved fast, rerouting the flow through a backup channel. The system groaned—low, deep, like something resisting correction. Then, slowly, the lights stabilized. The humming reduced to a steady tone.Silence followed.Only the wind outside filled the gap.One technician exhaled shakily.“That was close…”William didn’t respond immediately. His eyes stayed locked on the diagnostic screen.“The distortion pattern changed,” he said.Camelia looked up.“What do you mean changed?”William zoomed in on the data stream.“It adapted.”That single word made the room col

“William, the northern relay station just lost partial output.”The voice from the communications line crackled through the speaker.William straightened immediately, one hand already reaching for the tablet on the desk.“Which section?” he asked sharply.“Sector 3. It’s fluctuating between forty and sixty percent capacity.”“I’ll check it now.”He ended the call and stood up.Camelia, who had been reviewing reports across the table, looked up.“Another instability issue?”“Yeah,” William replied, already pulling on his jacket. “Same region we reinforced last week.”“I’m coming with you,” she said.William paused.“You don’t have to—”“I know,” she cut in calmly, standing as well. “But I want to.”He didn’t argue further. That in itself felt different. Not long ago, he would have questioned her decision. Or worried about her safety. Or overanalyzed the meaning behind it.Now, he simply nodded.“Alright.”They left the building together, stepping into the cold air outside. Snow fell in

“Are you going to tell her?”The question came without warning.Adrian didn’t look away from the valley below as he spoke. The wind on the balcony was sharper today, cutting through the quiet between them.William frowned slightly.“Tell her what?”“That I used to love her.”William exhaled slowly.“She already knows enough.”Adrian gave a faint nod, as if that answer didn’t surprise him.“I suppose she does.”A pause settled between them again. Not uncomfortable this time—just heavy with things neither of them needed to say aloud.Far behind them, inside the building, voices echoed faintly. Life continued as usual inside the People’s Grid headquarters, but out here it felt like another world entirely.William finally spoke.“Why are you telling me this?”Adrian leaned back slightly against the railing.“Because I think you’ve been waiting for a reason to hate me that doesn’t exist.”William didn’t answer immediately. The truth in that statement was too accurate to dismiss.“I don’t h

"Dad, aren't you coming to bed?"Ethan's small voice broke the silence inside the laboratory.William flinched slightly. He quickly turned off his monitor and looked toward the doorway. An eight-year-old boy stood there in blue pajamas, clutching a small wolf plush against his chest. His hair was messy, and his sleepy eyes struggled to stay open.William smiled faintly."What are you still doing awake?"Ethan rubbed his eyes."I was looking for you."William knelt until they were at eye level."You should be sleeping.""I woke up, and you weren't there."The little boy wrapped his arms tightly around William's neck."I got scared."The innocent embrace made William's chest tighten. He hugged his son just as tightly."I'm here.""You're not leaving, are you?"William closed his eyes for a brief moment."No.""Promise?""I promise."Ethan finally smiled.William lifted him into his arms and carried him out of the laboratory. The hallways of the People's Grid headquarters were quiet. "I turned it down."The room fell silent.Camelia slowly lowered the report she had been reading and looked across the conference table at Adrian."You... what?"Adrian offered a small smile, though there was exhaustion behind it."I declined the position in Zurich."Marko nearly dropped the mug in his hand."Are you serious? That's one of the biggest energy companies in Europe.""I know.""They offered you enough money to retire before you're fifty.""I know that too."Camelia frowned."Then why?"Adrian leaned back in his chair, folding his hands calmly."Because People's Grid isn't finished."His answer was simple, yet it carried undeniable conviction."I promised I'd help stabilize the network," he continued. "Walking away now would make everything we've built meaningless."Stefan looked genuinely impressed."Most people would have packed their bags before the offer letter finished printing."Adrian laughed quietly."I've never been 'most people.'"Camelia nodded politely."We app

"William... he's crying again."Camelia's exhausted voice barely rose above a whisper as another sharp cry echoed through their room.Waaah...Waaah...The sound cut through the silence of midnight.William immediately pushed aside his blanket and sat up."I'll get him.""No."Camelia was already climbing out of bed, her movements slow and heavy. Dark circles shadowed her eyes after nearly two weeks of sleepless nights."I'll do it."She walked to Elyan's crib and gently lifted him into her arms."It's okay, sweetheart," she whispered. "Mama's here."But Elyan only cried harder.Camelia rocked him carefully, humming the lullaby she had sung every night since he was born.Nothing changed. His tiny body continued to tremble with loud, desperate sobs.William quietly stood beside her."Maybe let me—""I said I've got him."Her reply came more sharply than she intended.William fell silent.Camelia instantly regretted her tone, but she was too tired to apologize. She tried walking around

The victory on the terrace of the Obersdorf research station was only a brief pause. William knew that Vance’s retreat was not a defeat for the Global Creditors Alliance, but merely a shift in tactics. In a world interconnected by digital systems, there was no place truly hidden as long as signals s
