I yanked my boots on and stood up fast. The scales on my arm caught the weak light coming through the window and flashed like fresh steel. Gunnar was already buckling his sword belt, movements sharp and practiced. No long speeches. No bullshit pep talk. Just the two of us in that small room with the bond humming between us like it knew what was coming.

"Grab your cloak," he said. "And the spare dagger. You're not going out there with nothing but claws."

I snatched the black cloak from the chair

Sunna tried twice to pull me away for food or a bath. I told her to fuck off both times. She left the third time with a tray of bread and watered wine I didn't touch. Matthías limped in once around midday, arm still in the sling, face a mess of purple bruises. He took one look at Gunnar's chest, at the black lightning handprint still spreading faint veins under the skin and nodded like he understood."He'll pull through," he said. "Man's too stubborn to die from one old witch's trick."I didn't answer. I just kept my palm flat over the burn mark, scales pressing against Gunnar's skin, willing the bond to push whatever strength I had left into him. The power inside me stirred every time I tried. Not the wild explosion from the valley, but something restless. Hungry. Like it wanted out and didn't care who got hurt this time.By late afternoon the room felt too small. Gunnar's breathing had evened out some, but the black veins hadn't faded. Every shallow rise of his chest reminded me of

We made it to the top of the ridge. Two of our horses waited, spooked but still there. I got Gunnar across one saddle on his stomach like a sack of grain. He groaned when I tightened the straps but didn't wake up fully. The bond felt steadier now that I was touching him, but it was still wrong... like a song missing half the notes.Sunna swung up behind me on the other horse. "The men are saying you swallowed half the valley. Some of them are scared of you now, Elva. They saw what happened to our own guys."I didn't answer. I just kicked the horse into a trot and kept one hand on Gunnar's back the whole ride. Every jolt of the saddle sent fresh pain through the bond. His breathing stayed shallow. The lightning burn on his chest looked worse up close: black veins spreading out from the print like poison. The ride back to Ironfang Keep took the rest of the afternoon. We moved careful, scouts ahead, no talking. My body ached like I'd been beaten with clubs. The scales itched and pulled a

Nina's crossbow bolt took it in the eye. The creature didn't even slow down. It swiped at her position on the ridge and she dove clear just in time.Matthías slammed into its side as a wolf, teeth sinking into its stone shoulder. The Bound grabbed him by the scruff and hurled him into a tree. He hit hard and didn't get up."Matthías!" I screamed.Sunna was suddenly beside me, dagger bloody. "He's breathing. Focus!"The creature came for me again. Gunnar met it head-on. His sword rang against its arm and snapped clean in half. The Bound backhanded him a second time. This one connected solid. Gunnar flew and crashed into a boulder ten yards away. He didn't get up.The bond between us screamed. For a second everything went quiet in my head except that scream. The fire inside me exploded past every leash the bond had tried to put on it. Scales raced down my other arm. My claws lengthened into black talons. The ground under my feet cracked in a perfect circle.I ran straight at the Bound.

Gunnar yanked the horse sideways. The bolt slammed into the dirt where we'd been and exploded in a shower of sparks. The ground cracked open a few feet away. Not my doing. Theirs. That was all it took. Our riders charged down the ridge with a roar. Matthías shifted mid-leap and slammed into the front line as a massive black wolf. Nina's crossbow sang from the ridge and two enemy wolves dropped.I slid off the horse and hit the ground running. Claws out. The fire roared but the bond with Gunnar kept it leashed just enough. I raked the first wolf that came at me across the face. Blood sprayed hot across my arm. It felt good.Gunnar fought beside me, sword flashing. Every time our shoulders brushed the bond flared brighter. The scales on my arm spread to my elbow without pain. I slammed my palm to the dirt and let a little power out. Roots burst up under three wolves and yanked them screaming into the ground.Sunna appeared at my side, dagger flashing. "Left flank!" she yelled.I turned

"I've got claws that can crack the ground, Gunnar. I think I'll manage."He looked at me then, silver eyes hard but the corner of his mouth twitched. "You'll manage better with steel in your hand too." He tossed me the dagger. I caught it and slid it into my belt. The weight felt right. We stepped out into the corridor. Matthías was already waiting, armor strapped tight, face set like he'd been born for days like this.

The tankard hit the table hard and the hall exploded with rough cheers. Matthías slammed his down next, foam splashing, and roared something about burning the elders' balls off. Nina laughed like she meant it. Sunna just shook her head at me, small smile tugging her lips, but her eyes stayed worried. I drank with them, the sour ale burning down my throat, and felt the fire in my chest answer like it was toasting right back.Gunnar didn't cheer. He just watched me over the rim of his cup, silver eyes steady. The bond hummed between us, low and warm, like a second heartbeat I couldn't ignore anymore. My scales itched where they climbed my shoulder, but the touch of his gaze made the itch settle. I set my tankard down harder than I meant to."Enough celebrating," Gunnar said, voice cutting through the noise. "We hit them once. They'll hit back harder. Get some sleep. We train at first light."Chairs scraped. Warriors filed out, slapping backs and muttering plans. Sunna squeezed my should
