APRIL

As we drove away from the Lane family's house, my father kept looking at me with disapproval, as if I had done something wrong.

He should be happy that his daughter knew how to defend herself. I myself am proud and surprised at how well I did.

"Are you happy now? The Lanes have been like family to us, and you go and break their son's nose, and not satisfied with that, you shout his sexual preferences from the rooftops. What is going through your head, April?" my father sighs in frustration.

"What should I have done, Dad? Let them call me a slut? Because the one who messed up here wasn't me. I haven't done anything I should regret." I might have had a lot of sex with a stranger, but I don't regret that either.

"You could have kept some information to yourself. And breaking his nose? I thought you were a lady."

"Breaking his nose is what I am most proud of. He played with me in so many ways, Dad. Can you imagine how much this hurts? How awful I feel? You, better than anyone, know that I loved David; I had to let this out somehow. He didn't help by saying the things he said to me."

"They could press charges against you. Knowing Teresa, she must be talking to her husband right now, pressuring him to throw you in jail for assaulting her little boy and causing him injuries. We are not joking around, April."

"And to think I was about to marry him." My father must have felt the unhappiness radiating from me, because his tone changed.

"How is your hand?"

"Sore and swollen." I held it out to show him. My knuckles had taken on a deep purple color. "But like I said, I don't regret it."

"Before going home, we are going to the hospital to get it looked at. I don't really like how it looks." I just nodded as he drove to the hospital.

As I looked out the window, I started to think that my chances of not having a criminal record after tonight were becoming rather slim.

Without a doubt, Teresa would report me without any fear of a scandal.

While my head created multiple scenarios where I ended up locked in a cell in all of them, my optimistic side reassured me, thinking that once my unfortunate reality was known, I would only get community service or a fine.

"Take it easy, sweetheart, I won't let them hurt you anymore. If we have to face charges, I will argue that it is normal for people to get carried away and react poorly under circumstances like the ones that took place."

"Thanks, Dad," I said, flexing my still numb hand again.

"Where did you go these past few days?" Okay, air, why did you leave my lungs?

"I got drunk at a bar, pretty far from here." I wasn't lying; it is the truth, the absolute truth.

"And then?" I got fucked until I was exhausted.

"I was rescued by firefighters. Apparently, my body had too much alcohol, and it wasn't a good idea to set the dress on fire." Well, it is not entirely a lie, but it is not the truth either. Sweet baby Jesus! I hope he doesn't keep asking questions.

"What you did was not okay. Your recklessness never ceases to amaze me, April. You could have gotten hurt."

"I am. Let's just say the pain in my arm right now is not very pleasant. I guess David's face isn't a walk in the park right now either," I say, laughing and seeing that he is smiling too.

It seems I did hurt my hand. Nothing is broken, but there is a sprain in my ring finger.

From what the doctor said, it was a boxer's fracture, which I found way too funny given the irony of the situation.

The result was my finger in some sort of splint that will stay on for about two weeks.

"Well, Dad, what do you think? My boxing career was born and died right here." I burst out laughing.

"It is not funny at all. How will you work like that?"

"The same way I normally do. It won't stop me from taking care of the little animals." They are actually sweet, unlike people.

"I do not understand how you can be so kind, sweet, and patient with them, yet today you proved to be bloodthirsty and vindictive."

"I don't know either, Dad. Do you think I broke his nose?"

"I would bet you did." He shakes his head, but he can't hide his visible smile.

"That makes me very happy. Maybe it is wrong, but I am truly glad." I sighed deeply, feeling absolutely relaxed, in a way I hadn't been for the past two days.

APRIL"April, what is wrong?" It was the third time Summer had asked me without getting an answer. "Come on, trust me, I do not like seeing you like this.""We need to get Mr. Patterson's bulldog ready, he will be by to pick him up in 20 minutes. Can you check that everything is in perfect condition?""Sure, April, I will do it right away." She sighs, annoyed, but I will not say anything to her."Thanks..." I could not help but replay the conversation with my father over and over in my head.Around noon, I see Ryan walk through the door. We had agreed to have lunch together, but with everything going on, I had forgotten."Bunny." Just that makes me relax. Taking me by the waist, he leaned in to place a kiss on my lips. "I hope you are ready to get out of here." I simply wrapped my arms around his shoulders and hugged him.I needed a hug so much today."So my mother was not wrong, and you really are a slut?" That voice, one I had loved so much over the years, and now it only makes me f

MeganI do not think I have ever seen anyone as upset as Jack is right now.On the way to his house, he did not say a single word. I guess his head was full of things, while I did not say anything because I was too scared to open my mouth. When we walked into his house, things did not change much. His body was giving off a sort of "do not come near me" signal, and God knows I was not going to."What were you thinking? I only asked you to stay inside." Even though he did not yell, his tone made me feel so small."I wanted to be responsible...""Do not lie to me, angel, and do not lie to yourself. What you wanted was to prove that you are not weak. You thought, I will go to school and show everyone they are exaggerating. Well, breaking news, you were wrong, and you exposed everyone in a ridiculous way.""I know I made a mistake, but I really did not think he would dare. The school was full.""The building I pulled you out of was too, and that did not stop him from setting it on fire. Yo

JackWe were called for an apparent emergency, but when we arrived, there was nothing. I cannot believe people joke about this; while we are coming here, we might be needed somewhere else. My annoyance only grows. I still haven't spoken to my angel; I am getting the damn cold shoulder just for wanting to protect her. I look for my phone thinking about calling her to see how everything is going, but I cannot find it. I hope I did not lose it."Jack, we have a problem." I looked at Nathan, who was holding his phone."What happened now? A fake cat stuck in an imaginary tree?" I sighed in anger."No, actually, it is a moon trapped in a school, with a fire and a wolf," he shakes his head as I erupt."She dared to escape! I asked her to stay in the house. Is she foolish?" I growled so loudly that my teammates took a step back."Calm down, Jack, Ryan is taking care of it." Nathan's amused tone had vanished."Let's go to the school," I say, already heading to the truck. "What are you waiting

Megan"Children, continue with your work, I will be right back." I walk out of the classroom with a calmness that I clearly lack. I approach the door to Susan's classroom and knock until she comes out."What is wrong? You are pale and you look scared." Her look is worried. Do I really look that bad?"He is here. My God, Susan, I should have listened to Jack. Do not tell him I said that, but I cannot believe he actually dared to come. What are we going to do now?""I will go find Jeremy, you call Jack." What? No..."Um... no. We can solve this. I am not suicidal enough to tell him I sneaked out. Susan, I am sure he hasn't even noticed yet.""Do not start right now," she looks at me, annoyed. "Call him, this is serious, Meg." And with that she leaves, surely to look for Jeremy.I look through the door's window at the calm children, oblivious to the lunatic nearby. I cannot be so selfish and not protect them. Sighing, I take out my phone and prepare for a battle I have already lost. I he

MeganTelling Susan that I would stay with Jack was not as easy as I thought, especially with her making a scene. The good thing was Jeremy's presence and the fact that Jack promised he would not let anything happen to me. But that was a walk in the park compared to the conversation I am having right now with Jack."You cannot tell me not to go to work, that is crazy. Do you understand that it is my responsibility?""Now is not the time, angel, you do not understand things. Here at home you will be safe, there is no need for you to expose yourself like that." My eyes narrow and my patience reaches its limit."If this is how it is going to be, I am leaving. Not just to work, I am leaving this place. You do not own me, Jack. I have been working non-stop for two years, I cannot just leave everything hanging, do you understand? Besides, Susan and Jeremy will be there, they will not leave me alone, nothing will happen to me.""You are not going, angel, and that is my final word." Damn poss

MeganI see him before me, and he looks devastated. Perhaps I am being selfish; it cannot be easy to tell someone you are a wolf. I am a damn selfish witch!"What you said does not bother me. I was surprised that you were a wolf, but I am scared of what you might do to me." His expression is uncertain, and I know that is my fault."I would never do anything to you, angel. To hurt you would be to hurt myself. Since I discovered you were my mate, I have done nothing but protect you. After what happened yesterday, I have no intention of letting you out of my sight, even if you do not want me around." He lowers himself, sitting against the wall just like me. "I will not be like your ex-boyfriend. I intend to protect you from him.""When you asked me if I believed in the supernatural, well, I thought you had already figured it out. I mean, I never imagined you would tell me you were one yourself. I knew you were hiding something from me, but I thought of many different things." I was so wr
