Chapter 1

作者: Coco Crisp
The day of the exam, just before we entered the testing center, Samuel Ashley accidentally dropped his pencil in the middle of the road.

A passerby hurried past and stepped right on it. The barrel cracked open, making it unusable.

Sweat beaded across Samuel's forehead. There were only a few minutes left before the doors closed, and there wasn't enough time to buy another one.

Without a second thought, I shoved the brand-new pencil that Jayla West had just handed me into his palm and took the ruined one from him.

"I brought an extra. Go ahead and use this."

Samuel let out a long breath of relief. "Thanks. Dinner's on me after the exam."

Then he turned and hurried into the testing center without another glance.

The truth was, I didn't have a spare.

I had no choice but to pull out the bent lead, pinch the fragile stick between my fingers, and carefully mark every answer.

By the end of the exam, my palms were smeared black with graphite. Sweat had soaked my hands, but somehow I managed to finish every answer on the sheet.

After the exam, I waited outside the school gates from dusk until the streetlights came on, but Samuel never showed up.

I only learned later, from overhearing classmates, that the moment he walked out of the testing center, he'd gone straight to the diner with Jayla to celebrate. He'd completely forgotten he'd promised to have dinner with me.

Watching him defend her now so matter-of-factly, it was obvious he'd also forgotten that we'd swapped pencils before the exam.

Something suddenly came back to me.

Earlier that semester, Jayla had collected class funds to buy everyone's exam supplies. She claimed she was placing a bulk order for the class, yet the expense for the pencils had always been suspiciously vague. She kept saying she'd gotten them through a friend, but no matter who asked, she could never produce a receipt or proof of purchase.

I'd thought something felt off back then, but I just hadn't wanted to embarrass her in front of everyone.

However, I knew better than anyone that the defective pencil had never been in my possession. I'd put it into Samuel's hand myself before we entered the testing center.

When I didn't respond, Samuel's face darkened. His voice grew sharper with impatience. "What more do you want? It was just one exam. Do you really have to keep sulking?"

I couldn't help laughing at how shamelessly he'd twisted the truth.

"Just one exam? College applications are due. This was my last shot. If Jayla hadn't cut corners and bought defective pencils, none of this would've happened."

"Can you stop being so aggressive?" Samuel frowned. "Jayla worked so hard, running around for the whole class. She didn't do it on purpose. You were just unlucky enough to get the bad pencil. Just chalk it up to bad luck."

The classmates around us immediately began murmuring in agreement.

"The class president didn't mean for this to happen."

"Exactly. She worked so hard for everyone. Nobody wanted this. There's no point making such a big deal out of it."

I looked Samuel straight in the eye. "If this had happened to you, would you still be so quick to let it go?"

He let out a contemptuous laugh. "What else would I do? Keep going after an innocent person like you are?"

I let out a silent, bitter laugh.

'Fine. We'll see if you still feel that way once you find out that you turned in a blank exam paper.'

The argument grew louder and louder until Mr. Daniel Sanford finally noticed the commotion and hurried over.

"What's going on? This is supposed to be a celebration. Why are you all arguing?"

The moment she saw him, Jayla's eyes immediately filled with tears. She stepped forward, choking back a sob.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Sanford. This is all my fault. One of the pencils I bought for the class was defective. The marks disappear after a few hours, and that's why Ellie Harris's answer sheets came back completely blank..."

She wiped away her tears, looking equal parts guilty and innocent.

Instead of getting angry, Mr. Sanford gently patted her shoulder. "This isn't your fault. You were only trying to help the class. Which store did you buy the pencils from? I'll contact them about compensation."

At his words, Jayla's expression tightened for a split second. She shook her head nervously before timidly pulling a few coins from her pocket.

"Please don't go after the store. The owner has a family to support. This was my mistake. I'll compensate Ellie myself."

The surrounding classmates immediately broke into praise.

"Jayla is way too kind."

"Seriously. Even now, she's still thinking about someone else. She's such a good person."

Holding the coins carefully in both hands, Jayla reached toward me.

Then, just as she was about to place them in my palm, she suddenly loosened her grip. The coins clattered onto the floor, scattering in every direction.

  • Blank Exam   Chapter 10

Samuel was almost unrecognizable after just a month. His hair was unkempt, his face covered in stubble, and dark circles hung beneath bloodshot eyes. He'd lost a shocking amount of weight, and the wrinkled clothes hanging off his frame only made him look more haggard. The proud, confident young man who had once seemed destined for greatness was gone, replaced by someone utterly defeated. The moment he saw me, he pushed himself upright with a hand on his knee and hurried after me."Ellie, I know I was wrong. I know I failed you… Can you give me one more chance? Can we start over?"I stopped and looked at him calmly."Samuel, it's over between us. Don't come looking for me again. I hope we can both move on with our lives and leave each other in peace."With that, I turned and walked into my building without looking back. From that day on, Samuel never appeared in my life again. Not long afterward, the verdict in Jayla's case was announced. She was convicted not only of deliberat

I steadied my mother as her emotions gradually settled, then turned to leave."Ellie, wait! Please wait!"Samuel struggled to his feet, but his knees buckled beneath him. After several failed attempts to stand, he remained on the ground, crying out in remorse."I'm sorry... I was wrong. I was really wrong! Please, can you forgive me just this once?"I never slowed my steps. I didn't even spare him a glance. Holding my mother's hand, I walked straight out of the police station. The moment we stepped outside, two uniformed military officers strode toward us. Their expressions were solemn, their posture impeccable. It was obvious they had been through rigorous military training."Excuse me, are you Ellie Harris? We're from the Military Academy Special Admissions Office."After verifying your academic records, we learned that you're the daughter of a fallen service member. Combined with your outstanding SAT score, exemplary character, and resilience, you fully qualify for our specia

Samuel finally snapped back to reality as everything clicked into place at once.Rage exploded through him. He stormed over, grabbed Jayla by the collar, and yanked her to her feet."It was you! It was you all along! How could you be this vicious?"Jayla trembled violently. Her face turned deathly pale as tears streamed down her cheeks."I wasn't trying to hurt you! I never wanted to hurt you!" she cried. "Ellie was always my target! The country's top universities only had room for one male and one female student from our state. I wanted us to get in together. I only wanted to get rid of Ellie, so I gave her that pencil! But Ellie's more calculating than I ever imagined. She's the one who switched pencils with you on purpose! If she hadn't done that, none of this would've happened!""Stop trying to blame someone else!" Samuel was shaking with fury, every word forced through clenched teeth."She was trying to help me! My pencil broke, so she gave me hers! If you hadn't gone throug

The security footage was retrieved almost immediately. The video clearly showed what had happened outside the testing center before the exam.Samuel's pencil had accidentally fallen into the road, where a passerby stepped on it and snapped it in half. He stood there, completely at a loss.I walked over and placed my perfectly good pencil into his hand, took the broken defective one from him, and never once tried to wrestle it away or switch it in secret. I initiated every movement, and he accepted it without hesitation. The footage was crystal clear. There was no evidence whatsoever that I'd secretly switched the pencils or deliberately tried to sabotage him. After watching the recording, one of the officers spoke immediately, "The security footage clearly shows that Ellie voluntarily gave Samuel the good pencil and accepted the damaged one herself. She was simply trying to help him, not deliberately switch the pencils. She committed no crime."The footage played again and again.

Jayla burst into tears and pointed straight at me, insisting that I'd discovered the pencil was defective and secretly switched it with Samuel's.Most of our classmates had already taken her side. Their accusations grew louder and harsher by the second."Exactly! Jayla said she gave the defective pencil to Ellie. If Samuel ended up with it instead, Ellie must've switched them.""Ellie obviously realized something was wrong with the pencil and deliberately set Samuel up. She's always been jealous of how well he does.""That's beyond cruel. Just because she couldn't measure up to him, she had to destroy his future?"Every accusation drove itself deeper into Samuel's heart. He'd already refused to accept the truth, and now he was completely convinced that I'd been plotting against him all along. His eyes turned bloodshot as he pointed at me and roared, "Ellie, you vicious girl! You ruined my life! I'm calling the police, and I'm going to make sure you pay for this!"Mr. Ashley's fa

Samuel shifted uncomfortably under everyone's stares. Irritation crept into his voice. "What are you all looking at? What's there to see?"One of our classmates hesitated before finally speaking up, "Everyone else has checked their scores. Nobody's results are abnormal... So if there really was a disappearing-ink pencil..."He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't have to.Everyone in the room had already reached the same conclusion. For the first time, panic flashed across Samuel's face. He finally realized something was terribly wrong. His trembling fingers fumbled for his phone as he hurriedly opened the SAT score portal. The loading wheel spun endlessly before the page finally refreshed. The number staring back at him hit him like a punch to the gut.410.The color drained from his face.He stared at the score in disbelief, frantically hitting refresh over and over.Once.Twice.Three times. The number never changed.410."That's impossible! There's no way!" Samuel c
