"I know what you are, human." Thorne's voice was cold as ice, cutting through the silence of the corridor. "You're not just some simple servant. You're his whore."

I froze, my heart seizing in my chest. I had been walking back to Lucian's chambers after a meeting with the resistance leaders, my mind still buzzing with the weight of our conversation. I hadn't expected to run into Thorne. I hadn't expected to be cornered in this empty corridor, far from any help.

"Thorne," I said, keeping my voice steady despite the fear coursing through me. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Don't play dumb with me." He stepped closer, his silver hair gleaming in the torchlight, his ice-blue eyes filled with malice. "I've seen the way he looks at you. I've seen the way you sneak into his chambers at night. Everyone knows, Elena. Everyone."

I backed away, my heart pounding. "Lucian will hear about this."

"Lucian is busy." Thorne's smile was cold, cruel. "He's dealing with Lord Vane's challenge, remember? He's not here to protect you."

"Then I'll wait for him to return—"

"No." He lunged forward, grabbing my arm, his grip like iron. "You'll come with me. Now."

I tried to pull away, to scream, but his hand clamped over my mouth, muffling my cries. He dragged me down the corridor, through a hidden door I had never noticed before, into a narrow passage that wound through the walls of the palace.

"Don't struggle," he hissed in my ear. "It will only make things worse."

I didn't listen. I fought him with everything I had, kicking, scratching, biting. But he was so much stronger than me, his Lycan strength impossible to overcome.

We emerged in a small, windowless room deep in the bowels of the palace. It was bare except for a single chair and a table covered in tools that made my blood run cold. Torture instruments. The kind I had only heard about in whispered stories.

"Please," I begged, my voice trembling. "Please, don't do this. Lucian will kill you."

"Lucian won't know." Thorne shoved me into the chair, binding my wrists and ankles with thick leather straps. "I'm going to make sure of that."

"What do you want from me?"

"I want you gone." He leaned in close, his breath hot against my ear. "You've corrupted our lord. You've turned him soft. You're a threat to everything we've built."

"I'm not a threat. I just want peace."

"Peace?" He laughed, a cruel sound. "There is no peace in this world. There's only power. And you're going to help me take it."

"What are you talking about?"

He stepped back, picking up a knife from the table. The blade gleamed in the dim light, sharp and deadly.

"I'm going to use you as bait," he explained, his voice calm, matter-of-fact. "Lucian will come for you. He'll do anything to save you. And when he does, I'll be waiting. I'll kill him, take his power, and become the new Alpha King."

"You're insane."

"No, I'm practical." He smiled, a chilling expression. "Lucian is strong, but he's also weak. His weakness is you. And I'm going to exploit it."

He raised the knife, and I braced myself for the pain.

---

The first cut was across my arm, shallow but agonizing. I screamed, the sound echoing off the stone walls. Thorne laughed, the sound filling the room with its cruelty.

"Lucian isn't coming," Thorne said, his voice mocking. "You should have known better than to trust a Lycan. We don't love. We don't care. We only take what we want."

"You're wrong." My voice was strained, but I refused to give up. "He loves me. He's different."

"He's weak. And weakness deserves to be punished."

He cut me again, this time across my shoulder. I bit my lip, trying not to cry out, refusing to give him the satisfaction.

But the pain was overwhelming. With each cut, I felt myself slipping, my grip on consciousness fading. I thought about Lucian, about the baby growing inside me. I couldn't die here. I couldn't let Thorne win.

"Please," I whispered. "Please, stop. I'll do anything."

"Anything?" He laughed again. "You'll die. That's what you'll do."

He raised the knife for another blow, but before he could strike, a noise from the corridor made him freeze. Footsteps, heavy and urgent, growing louder by the second.

"What—" Thorne started, but he didn't get to finish.

The door burst open, and Kael stood in the doorway, his golden eyes blazing with fury.

"Thorne," he said, his voice cold as death. "Step away from her."

"Kael." Thorne's voice was tight, controlled. "I didn't expect to see you here."

"Obviously." Kael stepped into the room, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "You've gone too far, Thorne. Even you must know that."

"I'm doing what's necessary. You know Lucian has lost his way. He's been corrupted by this human whore."

"She's not a whore. She's his mate. She's carrying his child."

Thorne's eyes widened. "A hybrid child? You're both insane. Do you have any idea what that means? The council will—"

"The council is dead." Kael's voice was flat, emotionless. "Lucian killed them all. Remember?"

"That's exactly my point. He's lost his mind. He needs to be stopped."

"By you?" Kael laughed, a cold sound. "You're nothing compared to him. You've always been nothing."

Thorne snarled, lunging at Kael with the knife. But Kael was faster, his sword flashing out, blocking the blow. The two Lycans clashed, their movements a blur of speed and fury.

I watched, barely conscious, as they fought. Thorne was skilled, but Kael was better. Within moments, Kael had disarmed him, pinning him to the ground with his blade at his throat.

"Kael," Thorne gasped. "Please, we're friends. We've known each other for centuries."

"You betrayed our lord." Kael's voice was cold, merciless. "You tortured his mate. You threatened his unborn child. There's no coming back from that."

"Please. I'll do anything. Anything."

Kael looked at me, his eyes filled with a strange emotion. "Elena? What do you want?"

I stared at him, my mind swimming. "I want him to suffer. I want him to know what it feels like to lose everything."

Kael nodded. He turned back to Thorne, his expression hard.

"Take him," he commanded, gesturing to the guards who had appeared in the doorway. "Lock him in the deepest dungeon. Make sure he regrets every single thing he's ever done."

The guards dragged Thorne away, his screams echoing through the chamber. I watched him go, feeling nothing but cold satisfaction.

---

Kael knelt beside me, cutting the leather straps that bound me to the chair. I slumped forward, the pain overwhelming, and he caught me, holding me steady.

"Elena," he said, his voice softer than I had ever heard it. "I'm sorry. I should have come sooner."

"You came," I whispered. "That's what matters."

"Can you walk?"

I shook my head. "I don't think so."

He lifted me into his arms, carrying me out of the room, through the corridors, up to Lucian's chambers. He laid me on the bed, his movements surprisingly gentle.

"I'll send for a healer," he said. "And I'll send word to Lucian. He needs to know what happened."

"Kael." I reached out, grabbing his hand. "Thank you."

He looked at me, his golden eyes unreadable. "I told you before. I'm not your enemy. I never was."

"I know. But why did you help me?"

He was silent for a long moment. "Because I've seen what you do to him. You make him better. You make him human. And maybe, if he can change, so can the rest of us."

I stared at him, surprised. I had never expected to hear such words from Kael. He had always seemed so cold, so calculating.

"Thank you," I said again.

He nodded, then turned and left. And I was alone with my pain and my thoughts.

---

Lucian arrived hours later, his face pale with fear.

"Elena." He rushed to my side, his hands shaking as he examined my wounds. "What happened? Who did this?"

"Thorne," I said, my voice weak. "He tried to kill me. Kael saved me."

Lucian's face contorted with fury. "I'll kill him. I'll rip him apart with my bare hands."

"He's already in the dungeon. Kael made sure of it."

"I don't care." His voice was raw, broken. "I want to be the one to end him. I want to make him suffer."

"Lucian." I reached up, touching his face. "I'm okay. I'm alive. That's what matters."

"You almost died." Tears streamed down his cheeks. "You almost died because of me."

"Because of Thorne. Not you."

"If I had been here—"

"But you weren't." I cut him off, my voice firm. "And I survived anyway. Because I'm strong. Because I refuse to give up."

He stared at me, his eyes wide with awe. "You are the strongest person I've ever known, Elena."

"I know." I smiled, a weak smile. "Now stop crying and hold me."

He laughed, a broken sound, and wrapped his arms around me. He held me so tightly I could barely breathe, but I didn't complain. I needed to feel him, to know that I was safe.

"I'm never leaving you again," he whispered into my hair. "Never again. I swear it."

"You can't promise that." My voice was muffled against his chest. "You have responsibilities. You're the Alpha King."

"Then I'll abdicate. I'll give it all up for you."

"No." I pulled back, meeting his gaze. "I didn't survive all of this just to watch you give up everything. We're going to do this together. We're going to build a better world."

He stared at me, his eyes filled with wonder. "You never cease to amaze me, Elena."

"Good." I lay my head against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. "Now let me rest."

He held me as I slept, his arms wrapped around me, keeping me safe from the darkness.

And for the first time in weeks, I slept without nightmares.

---

The next morning, the palace was buzzing with news.

Thorne had been executed. Lucian had personally seen to it, making sure the man who had tried to kill his mate suffered for his crimes. The other Lycans had been warned: anyone who threatened Elena would meet the same fate.

I heard the whispers as I walked through the corridors. Some were afraid, others resentful. But most were simply curious. The human queen, they called me. The woman who had tamed the Devil Beast.

I ignored them. I had more important things to focus on.

The resistance was gaining strength. Supplies were being smuggled to human settlements. Allies were being gathered on both sides. Lucian and I were slowly building a coalition that could bring about real change.

But the danger was far from over. There were still those who opposed us, who wanted to see us fail. Lord Vane was still gathering support for his challenge. The Ancient Ones were still out there, watching, waiting.

And then there was my pregnancy.

I had been careful to hide it, to keep it a secret from everyone but Lucian and a few trusted allies. But I knew it was only a matter of time before the truth came out. And when it did, everything would change.

Hybrid children were rare, almost unheard of. They were seen as abominations by many Lycans, and as threats by others. The Ancient Ones would want to destroy it. The resistance might see it as a symbol of hope.

Either way, my child would be a target.

Lucian found me in our chambers, staring out the window at the setting sun. He wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked.

"The baby." I leaned back against him. "I'm afraid, Lucian. Afraid of what will happen when the truth comes out."

"I won't let anyone hurt you or our child. I swear it."

"You can't control everything."

"No." He turned me to face him, his hands cupping my cheeks. "But I can try. And I can love you. I can protect you with everything I have."

I looked at him, at the man who had been my enemy and was now my everything. And I believed him.

"I love you," I said.

"I love you too." He kissed me, soft and tender. "We're going to make it, Elena. I know we are."

"Together," I agreed.

"Together."

And in that moment, despite the danger that surrounded us, I felt a glimmer of hope.

  • Blood Of The Moon   Chapter 9: The Hunt

The tunnels were dark and cold, filled with the musty scent of earth and decay. I pressed my back against the damp stone wall, my heart pounding so loudly I was certain the guards would hear it. The faint sound of footsteps echoed from somewhere above, the heavy tread of Lycan patrols searching for me. They had found out. Somehow, they had discovered my plan to leave. I had been so careful, so meticulous. I had waited until the dead of night, when the palace was silent and the guards were at their posts. I had slipped through the secret passageways that Tatiana had shown me, navigating the labyrinthine tunnels beneath the palace with nothing but a flickering torch and my memory. But someone had seen me. Someone had alerted the guards. Now they were hunting me. I pushed off the wall and continued forward, my footsteps silent on the packed earth. The tunnel was narrow, barely wide enough for me to pass through, and the ceiling was so low I had to hunch over. Cobwebs clung to my h

  • Blood Of The Moon   Chapter 7: The Absence

I sank down onto the bed, my tears falling freely. The room was cold, despite the fire crackling in the hearth. Or maybe the cold was coming from inside me, from the hollow ache that had taken up residence in my chest since Lucian had left. I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to summon warmth that wouldn't come. Tatiana was dead. The words echoed in my mind, a cruel refrain that I couldn't escape. My only friend, the woman who had been more family to me than anyone else in this world, was gone. Murdered by Thorne because of me. Because she had tried to help me escape. Because she had loved me. I pressed my palms against my eyes, trying to stop the tears that wouldn't stop flowing. But they kept coming, hot and relentless, soaking my hands, my cheeks, the thin fabric of my dress. I should have been used to this by now. Loss was a constant companion in this world, an old friend that visited too often. I had lost my parents, my home, my freedom. I had lost friends before, had

The next morning, I woke in his arms. For a long moment, I simply lay there, basking in the warmth of his body wrapped around mine. His chest was pressed against my back, his arm draped possessively over my waist, his breath warm against my neck. I had never felt so safe, so protected, so... cherished. I turned in his arms, careful not to wake him, and studied his face in the soft morning light. In sleep, the harsh lines of his features softened, making him look younger, almost vulnerable. His dark lashes fanned against his cheeks, his full lips slightly parted. He was beautiful, this monster who had somehow become my everything. "Staring is rude," he murmured, his voice rough with sleep, his eyes still closed. I smiled, a genuine smile that felt strange on my face. "I wasn't staring. I was... appreciating." His eyes opened, those crimson depths meeting mine with an intensity that made my breath catch. "Appreciating what, exactly?" "Everything," I whispered. "You. Us. This momen

The days that followed were unlike anything I had ever experienced.Lucian—I had to remind myself to call him that, to shed the fear that came with his fearsome title—was attentive in ways I never expected. He ensured I had proper meals, warm clothes, a comfortable place to sleep. He didn't demand my time, but he sought it out, finding excuses to have me near him.It was confusing. Disorienting. Everything I had been taught about Lycans, about him, told me this was a trick. A manipulation designed to lower my defenses so he could strike when I least expected it.But he never struck.Instead, he talked. He told me about his childhood, about a world before the invasion that had been filled with beauty and wonder. He told me about his mother, a gentle woman who had been killed when he was barely more than a child. He told me about the rage that had consumed him, the darkness that had taken root in his soul."I was fifteen when she died," he said one evening, his voice flat and distant. "

  • Blood Of The Moon   Chapter 4: The Breaking Point

Three days passed.Three days of watching, learning, and surviving. Three days of walking on eggshells, of trying to anticipate his moods, of learning the subtle cues that told me whether I was safe or in danger.Three days of feeling that strange pull toward him growing stronger with every passing moment. He had kept his word. He hadn't demanded anything from me, hadn't tried to touch me or force me into submission. He had simply... observed. Like I was a puzzle he was trying to solve, a mystery he was determined to unravel. And I couldn't stop thinking about him.It was madness. Pure, utter madness. He was a monster, a creature who had helped destroy my world. He had killed countless humans, had presided over a system of oppression that had reduced my people to slaves and playthings. He was everything I should hate, everything I should fear. And yet, when he looked at me with those crimson eyes, I felt something shift inside me. Something that terrified me more than any threat he co
