The rain hit the floor-to-ceiling glass like gunfire.

Inside the top-floor office of the Alighieri estate, the air was thick with mahogany, expensive cologne, and rain. Outside, the city bled red and gold through the storm.

But the storm outside was nothing compared to what was happening in this room.

“Tick-tock, Elena.”

The voice made the hairs on my neck stand up.

Dante Alighieri still hadn’t looked at me. He was pouring whiskey. Two fingers. No ice. His charcoal suit jacket shifted, and I caught the black ink of a snake crawling up his throat.

He was lethal. The kind of handsome that belonged on a wanted poster.

Sharp jaw. Dark hair slicked back. Eyes like a winter storm.

And zero warmth in them.

“I don’t have all night,” he said.

My hands were fists under the desk so he wouldn’t see them shake.

In front of me: a thick stack of cream paper. One signature line at the bottom.

My brother’s life under it.

“The transfer,” I said. I forced my voice to stay steady. “I want your word.”

Dante finally looked up.

“My word is absolute,” he said, calm. Too calm. “The moment your name is dry on that marriage certificate, Leo becomes an Alighieri asset. My guards will pull him from general population tonight. Private medical wing by morning. Rossi’s men won’t breathe near his cell without my permission.”

He slid a heavy silver fountain pen across the mahogany desk. It stopped in front of me.

“But if you walk out that door?” He leaned back. “Then we have a problem. Prison riots happen. Tragic accidents.”

He smiled. It didn’t reach his eyes.

A wave of nausea rolled through me. It wasn’t a choice. It was an execution with a bow on it.

Leo’s face flashed in my head. 18. Terrified. In a cell because my father ran and left us with millions in blood debt.

Then Julian. Green eyes. Safe. Far away.

_'I can protect you, El.'_

He couldn’t. Not from this.

I reached for the pen. Ice cold against my skin.

My hand shook as I signed.

_Elena Vance._

The second the last letter was done, I threw it.

The pen hit his chest with a dull thud and clattered onto the desk.

“There,” I said, standing. I leaned over his desk, close enough to smell tobacco and that 10k cologne. “You have your prize, Mr. Alighieri. Leo gets transferred tomorrow. If he gets one bruise, I will burn this entire empire to the ground myself.”

Silence.

In this city, people were killed for looking at Dante wrong.

Dante stared at me. Then he let out a low chuckle that vibrated through the room.

He stood.

6'3. Broad shoulders. Power rolling off him in waves. He came around the desk slow, his dress shoes echoing on marble like a death knell.

I didn’t step back. I wouldn’t.

He stopped inches from me. Close enough that I could feel the heat of him.

His hand came up and wrapped around my jaw. Not painful. Just unyielding.

His thumb brushed over my lower lip.

Electricity shot down my spine and I hated my body for it.

“I like the fire in you, Elena,” he murmured. His breath was hot against my ear. “But let’s get one thing straight. You don’t make demands here. You are my wife now. Your body, your breath, your very soul belongs to me. And tonight... I intend to claim my investment.”

I ripped my face from his grip. “I’m a contract,” I spat, chest heaving. “Not an invitation.”

Dante’s eyes darkened. Hungry.

“We’ll see how long that tongue stays sharp.”

He turned and hit the intercom. “Lorenzo.”

The oak door opened instantly. Tall. Scar over his brow. Dante’s shadow.

“Take my wife to the penthouse,” Dante ordered, eyes never leaving me. “Make sure she’s comfortable. Lock the doors from the outside. I don’t want her getting any foolish ideas about running back to her past.”

“Yes, Boss.”

Lorenzo stepped aside. “After you, Mrs. Alighieri.”

That name hit like a physical blow.

I walked out without looking back. Spine straight. Until the heavy doors shut behind me.

---

The SUV was a black, armored coffin. Rain poured down the tinted windows in sheets.

Lorenzo drove in silence. I stared at my phone.

It buzzed.

Unknown number.

> *Julian:* _Elena, where are you? Your apartment is empty. People are saying your dad fled the country. Please tell me you didn’t do anything stupid. Let me help you. I can protect you._

My throat closed.

I deleted it. Blocked the number.

If Dante found out Julian was looking for me, Julian was dead.

To keep him safe, I had to let him think I vanished.

The car pulled into a private underground garage. Private elevator. Straight up.

The doors opened to Dante’s penthouse.

Dark marble. Glass walls. City lights stretching for miles.

It was breathtaking. And it felt exactly like what it was.

A gilded cage.

“The master bedroom is at the end of the hall,” Lorenzo said. “The Don will be home in an hour.”

The elevator doors slid shut.

_Click._

Locked.

I walked down the hall. Bare feet sinking into the plush rug.

The master bedroom was massive. King bed draped in charcoal silk. Floor-to-ceiling windows with rain running down them.

In less than an hour, Dante Alighieri would walk through that door.

To claim me.

My phone buzzed again in my pocket.

Another text. Julian, new number.

> *Julian:* _I know something’s wrong. Please answer me._

My finger hovered over reply.

Footsteps echoed in the hallway outside.

Slow. Heavy. Deliberate.

The lock on the bedroom door turned.

My blood went cold.

The door opened.

Dante stood there. Suit jacket gone. Sleeves rolled up. Rain still on his shoulders and in his hair.

His stormy eyes found mine across the room.

“Wife,” he said.

The door shut behind him with a soft, final _click_.

The lock clicked at 6am.Leo didn’t move. "If it’s food, leave it.""It isn’t."Marco.Leo opened his eyes anyway because ignoring him felt more dangerous than looking. Marco walked in without knocking, charcoal suit hugging every hard line of his body, black shirt unbuttoned just enough at the collar to show the sharp cut of his collarbones. He dropped the folder on the table, shrugged off his jacket, and rolled his sleeves up slowly, exposing thick, veined forearms."What is that.""Work.""Why is it in here.""Because I’m working in here today." Marco’s voice was low, calm, and final. He pulled out the armchair and sat, thighs spreading wide as he claimed the space like he owned it. Like he owned *everything* in it.Leo sat up slowly, the sheet slipping down his bare chest. "...You’re joking.""No.""So I’m what, your office now.""For now." Marco’s dark eyes flicked over Leo’s torso for a beat too long before returning to the folder.Leo stared at him, heat already crawling unde

Leo slammed the book shut not because the story was bad but because it wasn’t his, because someone had left it there for him just like the fresh clothes folded at the end of the bed and the hot meals that showed up three times a day and the locked door that never opened from the inside. Comfortable, trapped, and somehow that made him angrier than chains ever could. The lock clicked. Leo didn’t look up. "If you’re here to tell me to eat don’t, I’m not hungry." The door opened anyway and footsteps crossed the room. "You skipped breakfast." Leo leaned back in the chair and crossed his arms. "I wasn’t hungry." Marco Rossi. Charcoal suit, black shirt, sleeves rolled to his forearms like he’d just come from something and hadn’t bothered to fix himself. He looked at the untouched tray, then at Leo, then picked the whole thing up and carried it to the door. "It got cold." "You came back because my food got cold?" "I don’t like waste." "Liar." One corner of Marco’s m

The first thing I thought about when I woke up wasn’t him. It was Leo. Ten days behind iron gates and marble walls and I hadn’t heard my brother’s voice once. I didn’t know if he was eating. If he was scared. If he thought I’d abandoned him. That hurt worse than the contract. Worse than the ring on my finger. I found Mrs. Bellini in the sitting room, folding towels like nothing was wrong. “Can I ask you something?” She looked up and smiled. “Of course.” “I want to see Leo.” Her hands stopped. “I’m afraid that’s something only the Don can approve.” I stared at her. “So I need his permission to see my own brother?” She lowered her eyes. “I’m sorry.” Right. Sorry didn’t open gates. I spent the rest of the day pacing. Checking windows. Listening for cars. The house was too quiet. Too perfect. Like I was the only real thing in it. He came home just before sunset. I heard the doors first. Then the shift in the air. The staff moving faster. “The Don is home.”

The drive home was silent in a way that felt heavier than the silence on the way there. Not the sharp, warning quiet we’d had in the beginning, when every word felt like it could cut. This was tired. Worn out. The kind of quiet that settles after too many people have been watching you for too long.Dante kept both hands on the wheel and his eyes on the road, but I could tell he wasn’t really seeing it. I did the same thing with the window, watching the city blur past and thinking about three things on repeat.Everyone at that dinner calling me Mrs. Alighieri like it was already true. Dante telling Sophia to leave with the whole room watching. The man on the balcony who smiled at me like he knew my name before I did. When we got inside, neither of us went upstairs. The house was too big and too quiet at 1am. We drifted to the kitchen because it was the only room that didn’t feel like it was waiting for something to happen.I sat at the island and watched Dante pour water. He didn’

Mrs. Bellini had three maids in my room by 6pm and they all talked over each other like they were being paid per opinion.“The red,” the first one said, holding up a dress that was basically three straps and a prayer. “It photographs better. The cameras love red.” “The black,” the second argued, already pinning her hair up like she was getting ready too. “More authority. You need them to take you seriously tonight.” “The gold,” the third whispered, like she was telling me a secret. “For the Morettis. They expect you to look expensive.”I walked past all of them and pulled out the navy dress from the very back of the closet. Long sleeves. High neck. No slit. It was the only thing in the entire room that didn’t feel like I was wearing someone else’s armor.Mrs. Bellini watched me for a second, then gave the smallest nod. “Good,” she said quietly. “Let them wonder why you didn’t try.”When Dante came in at 7:30 he didn’t knock. He just appeared in the doorway in a black suit with his t

I woke up to voices in my room and three women I didn’t know standing next to my bed like they’d been waiting for me to open my eyes. “Good morning, Mrs. Alighieri,” the one in front said with a curtsy. She was older, sharp suit, clipboard in her hands. “I’m Ms. De Luca. The Don has ordered a wardrobe prepared for you.” I was still tangled in Dante’s robe from yesterday and it swallowed me whole. “I didn’t order a wardrobe.” Ms. De Luca smiled like that was the expected answer. “The Don doesn’t wait for orders.” Behind her, two other women started wheeling in racks. Dresses in black and red and gold. Boxes of shoes. Cases that clinked when they moved them. Within ten minutes my room looked like a boutique had exploded in it. “Take them back,” I said. Mrs. Bellini appeared in the doorway then, calm and unhurried. “The Don doesn’t accept refusals,” she said quietly. “Shall we begin the fittings?” So I stood there for the next hour while they measured my waist and pinned hems and
