The morning sun did not rise with warmth; it cut through the towering glass windows of the Tribeca penthouse like a cold, silver blade.

Elena woke up with her heart racing, her body rigid, and her hands gripping the dark silk sheets of the massive bed. For a second, she didn't know where she was. Then, the heavy weight of the black diamond on her finger caught the morning light, and reality crashed down on her like a tidal wave.

She was in Adrian Vance’s penthouse. She was his captive wife.

Elena quickly turned her head to the other side of the bed. It was empty. The dark grey sheets were barely wrinkled, though a faint, lingering scent of cedarwood and cold rain confirmed that the billionaire had indeed slept there.

She sat up, pulling the silk pajama top tighter around her frame. Her head throbbed from the lack of sleep and the tears she had shed. But more than physical exhaustion, her mind was consumed by the terrifying words she had overheard in the dead of night.

“If he gets anywhere near Elena, kill him.”

Who was Adrian protecting her from? Or rather, who was coming for her that made a ruthless, untouchable titan like Adrian Vance give an order to kill?

Elena got out of bed, her bare feet pressing against the cold concrete floor. She walked over to the massive glass window. From the top floor, New York looked like a toy city, beautiful but distant. She felt completely isolated, cut off from everything she had ever known.

She needed answers. And she was going to get them.

After washing her face and changing into a simple, high-necked cream cashmere sweater and tailored black trousers from the closet—everything fitted her perfectly, which continued to unnerve her—Elena walked out of the master suite.

The penthouse was quiet, save for the faint, rich aroma of freshly brewed espresso and toasted sourdough.

She followed the scent to the kitchen, a sleek, state-of-the-art space dominated by white marble and matte black fixtures. Standing by the marble island was a woman in her late fifties, wearing a neat gray housekeeper’s uniform. She was setting down a silver tray.

"Good morning, Mrs. Vance," the housekeeper said, offering a warm, respectful bow. "I am Martha, the head housekeeper. Mr. Vance requested that I prepare breakfast for you."

The title Mrs. Vance felt like a slap in the face. Elena swallowed the lump in her throat and tried to smile. "Good morning, Martha. Please, call me Elena. Where is... Adrian?"

"Mr. Vance is in his private gym at the end of the left corridor, ma'am," Martha replied kindly. "He has been there since five o'clock. Shall I bring your breakfast to the dining table?"

"No, thank you, Martha. This is fine," Elena said, her eyes drifting toward the corridor Martha had pointed out.

The gym.

Elena took a deep breath, her hands clenching into fists inside her pockets. If she wanted answers, she had to confront the beast in his lair. She walked away from the kitchen, her heart hammering louder with every step she took down the dimly lit hallway.

As she approached the double glass doors of the gym, the sound of heavy, rhythmic thuds echoed through the corridor.

Elena stopped at the doorway, her breath catching in her throat.

Adrian was alone in the gym, wearing nothing but black athletic shorts and hand wraps. He was standing in front of a heavy leather punching bag, his body glistening with sweat under the harsh overhead lights.

With terrifying speed and brute strength, he delivered a brutal combination—jab, cross, hook, kick. Every strike hit the heavy bag with a deafening crack that reverberated through the glass walls. The muscles in his broad back, carved like granite, rippled with every movement. His thick thighs and powerful shoulders showed the physique of a man who didn't just run a corporate empire, but who could physically destroy anything in his path.

Elena watched, mesmerized and intimidated. There was a raw, primal violence in his movements, a wild energy that he usually kept hidden behind his expensive bespoke suits and cold, aristocratic demeanor.

He was angry. Extremely angry.

Adrian delivered one final, devastating roundhouse kick that sent the heavy bag swinging wildly, then grabbed it with both hands to stop its momentum. His chest heaved as he drew in deep, ragged breaths, sweat dripping from his sharp jawline onto his collarbone.

"Staring is a dangerous habit, Elena," Adrian said, his voice deep, raspy, and completely breathless. He didn't turn around, but his eyes were fixed on her reflection in the mirrored wall in front of him.

Elena flinched slightly, caught off guard. She stepped into the gym, crossing her arms to mask her nervousness. "I wasn't staring. I was looking for you."

Adrian slowly unwrapped his hands, the black cotton cloth falling to the floor. He turned around to face her, grabbing a white towel from a nearby bench to wipe the sweat from his face and neck. His silver-gray eyes locked onto hers, scanning her from head to toe, noting the cream sweater and the way she held herself.

"You look better than you did yesterday," he remarked coldly, tossing the towel aside. He walked over to a small fridge, pulling out a bottle of water and drinking half of it in one long, greedy gulp. "Did you sleep well?"

"You know I didn't," Elena said, taking a step closer, refusing to let him dominate the space. "And I think you know exactly why."

Adrian set the bottle down, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Do I?"

"I heard you last night, Adrian," Elena said, her voice dropping to a sharp whisper. She took another step, her emerald eyes burning with defiance. "I heard your phone call. 'If he gets anywhere near Elena, kill him.' Who were you talking about? Who is coming for me?"

The temperature in the room seemed to drop instantly. The casual, relaxed posture Adrian had assumed vanished, replaced by an icy, lethal stillness. He stared at her, his expression completely blank, but his silver eyes became dangerously dark.

"You shouldn't eavesdrop, Elena," he said, his voice a low, warning growl. "It’s a very bad habit. One that can get you hurt."

"I have a right to know!" she demanded, her frustration exploding. "My father sold me to you to save himself, and now I am locked in this penthouse with a man who has targets on his back! Who is 'he', Adrian? Is my life in danger because of you?"

In a movement so fast her eyes could barely register it, Adrian closed the distance between them. Before she could step back, he grabbed her upper arms, his grip firm and unyielding as he pulled her forward.

Elena gasped, her chest pressing against his warm, bare, sweat-slicked torso. The scent of him—raw, metallic, and intensely masculine—filled her lungs, making her dizzy.

"Your life is safe as long as you are with me," Adrian hissed, his face so close she could see the silver flecks in his dark pupils. "But if you think you can demand answers from me, you are sorely mistaken. You are my wife under a contract. You do not ask questions about my business, and you do not question my security."

"This isn't just your business! This is my life!" Elena cried, struggling against his grip. "You bought me for revenge against my father, didn't you? What did he do to you? Why do you hate him so much?"

Adrian’s grip tightened just enough to make her freeze. The rage in his eyes was so intense, so raw, that it terrified her more than any physical threat.

"Your father," Adrian whispered, his voice trembling with a dark, suppressed fury, "is a thief. He stole the only thing that mattered to my family. He built his entire empire on the blood and ashes of my father’s life. Do you think Ross Enterprises became a giant by honest means? Your father framed my father for embezzlement, took his patents, and watched him hang himself in a prison cell!"

Elena’s heart stopped. The world around her seemed to tilt. "No... that's not true. My father would never—"

"Your father did!" Adrian roared, his voice shaking the glass walls of the gym. He released her arms, stepping back as if the very touch of her burned him. He rubbed his temples, his chest rising and falling rapidly. "He did it twenty years ago. And I vowed that I would take everything he loved, just as he took everything from me."

Elena stared at him, her mind spinning. Her father... a thief? A murderer in a round-about way? The man who had tucked her into bed, who had bought her toys, who had cried when she graduated... had he really destroyed a man’s life so brutally?

"So you took me," she whispered, her voice cracking as a tear finally slipped down her cheek. "To punish him."

"Yes," Adrian said, his voice cold and devoid of any emotion now. He looked at her like she was a ghost. "You are his masterpiece, Elena. His pristine, perfect daughter. Taking you from him, watching him beg on his knees to hand you over... that was only the beginning."

"You are a monster," she breathed, her voice trembling.

"I am his karma," Adrian corrected her coldly. He walked over to the door of the gym, pausing before he left. "Get ready. We have a lunch meeting with the press in two hours. You will smile, you will hold my hand, and you will look like the happiest woman in the world. If you ruin this, Elena, I will make sure your father’s final days are spent in a prison cell far worse than the one my father died in."

With that final, brutal threat, Adrian walked out, leaving Elena alone in the cold, echoing gym.

Two hours later, Elena stood in front of the mirror in the master bedroom, staring at the woman looking back at her.

She was wearing a stunning, emerald-green silk dress that draped elegantly over her body, matching the color of her eyes. Her hair was styled in soft, sophisticated waves, and her makeup was flawless, hiding the dark circles under her eyes and the paleness of her skin.

On her finger, the black diamond caught the light, a silent, glittering reminder of her chains.

She looked like a billionaire’s wife. She looked perfect. But inside, she felt like she was dying.

The door to the bedroom opened, and Adrian walked in. He was dressed in a navy-blue bespoke suit, his white shirt crisp and his tie perfectly knotted. He looked like the picture of wealth, power, and masculine perfection.

He stopped, his gaze sweeping over her. For a moment, his silver eyes softened, a flicker of genuine admiration crossing his face as he took in her beauty in the emerald dress. But the mask of cold indifference was back in an instant.

"The car is waiting," he said shortly, holding out his arm.

Elena looked at his arm, then at his face. Her stomach twisted with a mix of dread and anger, but she remembered his threat about her father. She had to play the part.

She slowly reached out, placing her hand on his forearm. The muscles beneath his expensive suit jacket were hard as steel.

"If I do this," Elena said, her voice quiet but firm as they walked down the hallway toward the private elevator, "if I play your perfect wife... I want one condition."

Adrian raised an eyebrow, not looking at her as they stepped into the elevator. "You are in no position to negotiate, Elena."

"I am," she insisted, turning to face him as the elevator doors closed. "You need this press conference to look real. If I look miserable, the rumors will start, and your board of directors will ask questions. I will smile, I will lie, and I will make the world believe I love you. But in return, I want you to tell me who 'he' is. The man from your phone call."

The elevator descended in silence. Adrian stared at the metallic doors, his jaw tight. Just when Elena thought he was going to ignore her completely, he spoke.

"His name is Victor Vance," Adrian said, his voice dangerously quiet. "My uncle. He is a dangerous, unstable man who was exiled from the family years ago. He wants to destroy me, and he knows that the easiest way to do that is to take the things that belong to me."

"And I belong to you," Elena said, her voice dripping with bitterness.

"Yes," Adrian said, turning his head to look at her. The doors of the elevator opened to the private garage, but he didn't move. He leaned closer, his silver eyes flashing with a possessive, territorial heat. "You are mine, Elena. And Victor Vance has a habit of taking what is mine and breaking it. I won't let him touch you. Not because I care about you, but because I do not share my toys."

The sheer arrogance of his words made her blood boil, but before she could retaliate, Adrian grabbed her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers in a tight, possessive grip.

"Smile, Mrs. Vance," Adrian whispered, his face shifting into a warm, charming smile that didn't reach his cold eyes. "The cameras are waiting."

As they stepped out of the garage and into the bright flashlights of the paparazzi waiting outside the restaurant, Elena forced her lips to curve into a beautiful, radiant smile. She leaned into his side, looking like a woman deeply in love.

But as the cameras clicked and the reporters shouted their questions, Elena looked up at Adrian’s perfect, smiling profile, and she felt a dark, chilling realization.

She wasn't just trapped in a war between her father and Adrian.

She was now a target in a much darker, much deadlier war within the Vance family—and the man holding her hand was the only monster powerful enough to protect her, or destroy her completely.
