“I’m not coming back.”

“Yes, you are.”

The certainty in his tone chills me, like he genuinely believes I belong to him no matter what he does.

“I’m filing for divorce.”

His breathing changes slightly.

Then colder this time, “Don’t do something stupid because you’re emotional Amelia.

I close my eyes slowly.

Three years.

Three years married to this man and somehow I never realized how little respect he actually had for me.

“You already destroyed this marriage,” I say quietly. “I’m just burying it.”

Then I hang up.

My hands shaking afterward, nt because I regret it.

Because part of me still aches for him despite everything.

Claire walks over slowly. “You okay?”

“No.”

My voice comes out painfully honest.

“No, I’m really not.”

———-

By afternoon, I leave Claire’s apartment and head toward St. Vincent Medical Center.

The second I walk into the private ward, the smell of antiseptic wraps around me instantly and my chest tightens.

My father sleeps quietly in the hospital bed, monitors beeping steadily beside him. His face looks thinner than it did last week, it looks older and

Weaker too.

Fear crawls through me immediately.

“Dad?”

His eyes open slowly before softening when he sees me. “There’s my little genius.”

Tears burn behind my eyes instantly. Even now, sick and exhausted, he still smiles at me like I’m something precious.

I sit carefully beside him and hold his hand gently.

“How are you feeling?”

“Like your hospital food is trying to kill me.”

A laugh escapes me despite everything.

God, I needed that.

But then reality crashes back in again.

The medical bills, the treatments, paying the specialists.

My father’s condition has already drained most of my savings. And if I leave Ethan…i lose that financial security too.

The realization sits heavily in my chest.

I hate that money even matters right now but it does.

My father notices my expression immediately. “What happened?”

I force a smile quickly. “Nothing.”

“Amelia.”

His voice sharpening slightly.

I look away because if I meet his eyes right now, I might completely fall apart.

Thankfully, his doctor walks in before he can press further. As they discuss treatment plans and medications, my attention drifts toward the framed certificate hanging on the office wall outside the room.

Scientific Research Institute of New York.

A memory surfaces instantly, late nights in university laboratories research presentations.

My mentor, Professor David, telling me I had one of the brightest minds he’d ever seen.

Before marriage, befor I gave everything up for Ethan. Soomething painful twists inside me.

I loved research once.

God, I loved it.

After leaving the hospital, I sit in my car for almost twenty minutes staring at my contacts list before finally pressing call.

Professor David answers on the third ring.

“Amelia Hart,” he says warmly. “Well, this is unexpected.”

Emotion clogs my throat suddenly.

“It’s been a while.”

“Too long. How’s married life treating you?”

I almost laugh at the irony. Instead, I grip the steering wheel tighter. “Professor… is your research position still open?”

Silence.

Then carefully, “You want to come back?”

“Yes.”

“I thought you left science permanently.”

“So did I.”

He’s quiet for a second before saying gently, “You were always too brilliant to disappear, Amelia.”

My throat tightens painfully because Ethan never spoke about my intelligence like it mattered. Only my role as his wife.

Professor Bennett continues, “Come by tomorrow. Let’s talk.”

Relief crashes through me so suddenly I nearly cry again.

“Thank you.”

After hanging up, I sit there staring ahead while emotions war inside me.

Fear, rief.

Hope.

Maybe my life isn’t over after all, maybe this is just the beginning of something else.

That night, I finally return to the penthouse. Mostly because I need clothes.

The apartment is dark when I walk in, fr one brief second, it almost feels normal again.

Then Ethan steps out of the kitchen and my breath catches.

He looks terrible…he’s in a wrinkled shirt, he has tired eyes like he hasn’t slept properly.

Good.

“Amelia.”

I stiffen immediately.

“What are you doing here?”

His jaw tightens slightly. “I live here.”

Right.

Of course.

The silence between us feels unbearable.

Then Ethan walks closer slowly. “Have you eaten?”

I stare at him in disbelief.

He cheats on me and now suddenly wants to play caring husband?

“You don’t get to act concerned.”

His eyes darken slightly. “I am concerned.”

“You lost the right.”

Pain flashes across his face. But before he can speak again, my phone buzzes.

Unknown Number.

Frowning, I open the message and freeze.

A photo loads slowly onto the screen. It’s of a woman lying in bed, bare shoulders exposed beneath white sheets, Smiling smugly at the camera. Wearing my necklace, the diamond necklace Ethan bought me for our second anniversary.

My stomach drops violently, below the image is one text.

He likes seeing me wear it more.

Something inside me shatters completely.

Ethan notices my expression instantly. “What happened?”

I look up at him slowly, then I throw the phone at his chest.

His eyes scan the image and for the first time since this nightmare started….he actually looks alarmed.

“Amelia, calm down,” Ethan says quickly, stepping toward me the second he sees the photo. “It’s not what you think.”

I laugh bitterly, backing away from him. “Not what I think? She’s in bed wearing my necklace, Ethan.”

His jaw tightens. “She asked to borrow it. I didn’t know she was going to send you that.”

“Borrow it?” My voice cracks. “You gave another woman my anniversary gift?”

“It wasn’t a big deal,” he says immediately, reaching for my arm. “She kept asking for it and I didn’t want to argue.”

I stare at him in disbelief.

That necklace meant everything to me. I wore it on every important occasion because he gave it to me himself. And now another woman is lying in bed with it around her neck like she won something.

“She means nothing,” Ethan says softer this time. “You’re my wife.”

if I’m his wife……Why does another woman keep getting pieces of him that belong to me?

I give a small nod and start walking toward the balcony doors, my heels clicking softly. The silk gown flows around my legs with each step, cool and elegant despite everything. Just before I reach for the ornate handle, Dante speaks again, his voice calm and even, directed at my back. “Mrs. Hart.” I pause, hand hovering. “You’ve spent the entire evening worrying about what everyone else thinks.” His words cut through the night air with quiet precision. “Stop giving people who don’t respect you that much power.” I don’t turn around immediately. The statement sinks in, stirring something deep and uncomfortable in my chest. The whispers inside, Sophia’s jests about my inability to conceive, Ethan’s public control….it all feels heavier when named so plainly. I’m not ready to fully unpack it yet, not tonight. I simply nod once, the movement small but deliberate, and push open the door. Stepping back into the ballroom is like crossing into another world. Warm air rushes over me, thick

  • Bound to my Ex husband’s uncle   CHAPTER 38.

The atmosphere shifts instantly, thickening with unspoken family dynamics and the weight of what just happened inside.Ethan breaks the silence first. He forces a smile, polite and controlled, addressing his uncle. “Uncle.”Dante gives a single nod. Nothing more, no smile or extended greeting. Just that minimal acknowledgment that somehow makes the air feel even heavier. Ethan’s smile doesn’t reach his eyes as he turns to me.“I’ve been looking for you.”I fold my arms across my chest, the cool silk of my gown brushing my skin, and meet his gaze steadily. “You found me.”“I think we’ve both had enough excitement for one evening.” His voice is smooth, the kind he uses when he’s trying to steer a conversation back under his control. He takes a measured step closer, the lantern light catching on the expensive fabric of his suit.“No,” I reply evenly, my tone calm despite the anger still simmering under my skin. “You’ve had enough. I’m just getting started.”He ignores the jab comple

  • Bound to my Ex husband’s uncle   CHAPTER 37.

I clear my throat, trying to recover what little dignity I have left. “What are you doing here?” The second the words leave my mouth, I cringe. Brilliant. Questioning the owner of the estate about why he’s at his own family banquet. Dante arches one dark eyebrow. “I live here.” “…Right.” Heat creeps up my neck. “That was a stupid question.” “A little.” His lips twitch and I narrow my eyes. “Are you making fun of me?” “I’m thinking about it.” I huff. “Glad I’m entertaining someone tonight.” His gaze drops briefly to the empty champagne flute in my hand.“One glass?” “What?” “You’ve only had one.” I blink. “…Yes.” “It won’t help.” I stare at him. “Excuse me?” He nods toward the ballroom behind us. “Whatever you’re trying to forget.” His voice remains calm. “One glass won’t be enough.” For a moment…I don’t know what to say. He already knows I’m not out here enjoying the view. I’m hiding.I force myself to look away.“It’s not that dramatic.”“No?”His voice

I don’t wait to hear another word. If I stay another second, I’ll either scream…Or slap him. Maybe both. I spin on my heel and walk away. “Amelia.” Ethan’s voice follows me immediately. I don’t stop. “Amelia, wait.” His footsteps echo behind me fast trying to Close the distance. I whirl around so suddenly that he nearly walks straight into me. The ballroom continues buzzing around us, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing between us. I meet his eyes coldly. “If you take one more step after me…” My voice is quiet, quiet enough that only he can hear. “…I swear to God, Ethan, I’ll make a scene your family will never forget.” He freezes. Good. “You seem very concerned about your family’s reputation.” I hold his gaze. “Don’t test me.” For a long moment, neither of us moves. His jaw flexes, mine does too. Finally, he exhales through his nose. I take that as my cue to leave, I turn without another word and weave through the crowd. Conversations blur into meaningless no

  • Bound to my Ex husband’s uncle   CHAPTER 35.

The moment we step through the grand entrance of the Wolfe estate, I want to leave. The place is dazzling. Crystal chandeliers spill warm light across polished marble floors that reflect everything like dark mirrors. A string quartet plays softly from the balcony overhead, the notes drifting down like they belong to another, happier world. Impeccably dressed guests drift through the ballroom with champagne flutes in hand, their laughter low and polished. Every corner screams wealth, prestige, perfection….towering floral arrangements heavy with white roses and orchids, waiters gliding by in crisp tuxedos, the faint scent of expensive perfume and aged whiskey hanging in the air. I feel none of it. My silk gown clings to my skin, cool and expensive, but it suddenly feels like a costume. Ethan’s hand settles lightly against the small of my back, warm and possessive through the thin fabric. He guides me forward without asking. “Come on,” he says quietly, his voice low near my ear.

  • Bound to my Ex husband’s uncle   CHAPTER 34.

The silence inside the car is unbearable, not the comfortable kind. Not the kind that exists between people who know each other so well that words become unnecessary. No. This silence is almost Painful. Heavy with everything we aren't saying. I sit rigidly in the passenger seat, staring out the window as the city lights blur past us. The soft hum of the engine fills the otherwise quiet car. Beside me, Ethan grips the steering wheel a little too tightly. I notice because I know him or at least, I used to. The veins in his hands stand out prominently against his skin, his jaw is locked and his shoulders are tense. He glances at me every few minutes but Ipretend not to notice. Outside, evening settles over the city, people crowd the sidewalks, couples walk hand in hand, friends laugh as they spill out of restaurants. Normal people, living normal lives. I wonder what that feels like. The thought makes me want to laugh or cry. Possibly both. I turn my attention back
