The silence lingered.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Dangerous.

Selene stood motionless beneath the moonlight, her gaze fixed on Kael's face.

She had asked a simple question.

"Have you ever lied to me?"

Yet the reaction it provoked was anything but simple.

For the first time since she met him, the Alpha King had looked away.

Not out of anger.

Not out of annoyance.

Out of hesitation.

And that frightened her.

Because people only hesitate when the truth is complicated.

Or painful.

The cool night wind swept across the balcony, carrying the scent of pine forests and distant rain.

Still, neither spoke.

Selene's heart tightened.

For days, everything in her life had felt like a puzzle with missing pieces.

The prophecy.

The visions.

The mysterious woman.

The stolen records.

The Moonborn.

And now...

Kael.

The one person she had begun trusting.

The one person who had stood beside her when everyone else turned away.

The possibility that he was hiding something hurt far more than she wanted to admit.

Finally, Kael exhaled slowly.

"There are things I haven't told you."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Selene felt her stomach twist.

"Why?"

The question came out softer than intended.

More vulnerable.

Kael closed his eyes briefly.

Because he knew exactly what she was asking.

Not what.

Why.

Why keep secrets?

Why hide things from her?

Why let her walk blindly through a life filled with mysteries?

The answer was simple.

Because he was afraid.

And Kael Draven hated fear.

Especially his own.

"When I found out you were my mate," he said quietly, "I began investigating your past."

Selene frowned.

"My past?"

Kael nodded.

"There were inconsistencies."

The word felt strange.

Unsettling.

"What kind of inconsistencies?"

Kael's jaw tightened.

"The kind that shouldn't exist."

A knot formed inside Selene's chest.

The moonlight illuminated half his face while the other half remained hidden in shadow.

For the first time, he looked less like a king and more like a man carrying a burden.

"A week before the banquet," Kael continued, "I received information from one of my intelligence networks."

Selene listened carefully.

"The report claimed someone had been secretly altering records connected to House Vale for nearly eighteen years."

Her pulse quickened.

Eighteen years.

Her entire life.

Someone had been changing records for her entire life.

"Who?"

Kael shook his head.

"I don't know."

The answer frustrated him as much as it frustrated her.

Selene looked away.

Questions multiplied inside her mind.

Who would go to such lengths?

Why?

What made her so important?

And perhaps most terrifying of all—

Who had known the truth all this time?

Across the kingdom...

A raven landed on the windowsill of a secluded tower.

The bird's eyes glowed unnaturally red.

Watching.

Waiting.

The tower itself stood abandoned.

Or so everyone believed.

Inside, dozens of candles illuminated a circular chamber.

Ancient symbols covered the stone walls.

Maps.

Documents.

Bloodline charts.

And in the center of the room stood a woman.

Silver hair.

Silver eyes.

The same woman Selene had seen repeatedly in her visions.

She appeared no older than thirty.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

And impossibly sad.

The raven hopped onto her arm.

The woman gently stroked its feathers.

"What did you see?"

The bird emitted a low sound.

Its eyes flashed briefly.

Images appeared within the candlelight.

Selene.

Kael.

The balcony.

Their conversation.

The woman's expression softened.

Then darkened.

"He's finally telling her."

A mixture of relief and fear crossed her features.

For eighteen years she had remained hidden.

Watching.

Waiting.

Protecting.

Never intervening directly.

Never allowing herself to get too close.

Because the moment certain people discovered she was alive...

Everything would change.

A tear slid silently down her cheek.

"My daughter..."

The word barely escaped her lips.

The woman closed her eyes.

And for the first time in years...

She allowed herself to hope.

Meanwhile, inside Blackthorn Palace...

Another meeting was taking place.

One far more dangerous than the Royal Council.

Lord Victor Ashbourne sat across from a man whose face remained hidden beneath a black hood.

The atmosphere in the room felt wrong.

Cold.

Oppressive.

Predatory.

Victor hated it.

But he needed answers.

And the stranger possessed them.

"You knew this would happen."

The hooded man smiled.

"Of course."

Victor leaned forward.

"Then tell me what she is."

The stranger remained silent.

For a long moment.

Then he asked a question instead.

"Do you know why kingdoms fall, Lord Ashbourne?"

Victor frowned.

The answer irritated him.

"I didn't come here for riddles."

The stranger ignored him.

"Most people believe kingdoms fall because of wars."

His smile widened slightly.

"They're wrong."

Victor felt uneasy.

"Then why do they fall?"

The hooded man leaned closer.

His golden eyes gleamed beneath the darkness.

"Because of secrets."

The room became deathly quiet.

"Secrets create fear."

His voice lowered.

"Fear creates distrust."

Another pause.

"Distrust destroys everything."

Victor suddenly realized something.

This wasn't a conversation.

It was a warning.

Or perhaps...

A threat.

The nobleman stood.

"I think this meeting is over."

The hooded man laughed softly.

"Not yet."

Victor froze.

The stranger's smile disappeared.

"You asked what Selene is."

His eyes darkened.

"No."

The temperature in the room dropped dramatically.

"You should be asking who she was."

Victor's blood ran cold.

Before he could speak, every candle in the room extinguished simultaneously.

Darkness swallowed everything.

And a voice echoed from somewhere inside the shadows.

A voice that did not belong to the hooded man.

A voice older than time.

"The bloodline survives."

Victor stumbled backward.

His heart pounded violently.

"What was that?"

No answer came.

When the candles reignited moments later...

The hooded man was gone.

Completely gone.

Leaving only silence behind.

And a single symbol burned into the wooden table.

A crescent moon surrounded by seven stars.

Back at the palace...

Selene couldn't sleep.

No matter how hard she tried.

Too many thoughts.

Too many questions.

Too many secrets.

The clock had long passed midnight when she finally left her room.

She needed air.

Space.

Anything to quiet her mind.

The palace corridors were empty.

Moonlight filtered through stained-glass windows, painting colorful patterns across the floor.

Everything seemed peaceful.

Yet a strange feeling followed her.

The sensation of being watched.

At first she ignored it.

Then she heard footsteps.

Soft.

Careful.

Behind her.

Selene stopped walking.

The footsteps stopped too.

Fear crept into her chest.

Slowly, she turned around.

Nothing.

The corridor was empty.

Completely empty.

Her pulse quickened.

Maybe she was imagining things.

Maybe exhaustion was affecting her judgment.

Then she saw it.

A door.

One she had never noticed before.

Hidden between two stone pillars.

Partially concealed by shadows.

Selene frowned.

She had worked in the palace for years.

How had she never seen it?

Curiosity overcame caution.

Slowly, she approached.

The door stood slightly open.

Just enough to reveal darkness beyond.

A cold breeze emerged from inside.

And with it...

A familiar scent.

Lavender.

Moonflowers.

And something else.

Something she recognized but couldn't explain.

Her heart began racing.

Because suddenly...

A memory surfaced.

A forgotten memory.

A woman holding her.

Singing softly.

The same scent.

The same warmth.

The same voice.

Tears unexpectedly filled her eyes.

Without thinking, Selene pushed the door open.

The ancient hinges groaned softly.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Deep beneath the palace.

And at the very bottom...

A faint silver light glowed.

Waiting.

Calling.

Inviting.

Selene took one step forward.

Then another.

Unaware that someone was watching from the shadows.

Unaware that she was walking directly toward a secret hidden for nearly two decades.

A secret powerful enough to change everything she believed about herself.

And above her, inside his chambers, Kael suddenly woke with a violent start.

His wolf was roaring.

Panicked.

Furious.

One thought echoed through his mind.

Selene is in danger.

And somewhere far below Blackthorn Palace...

A woman's voice whispered through the darkness.

A voice filled with longing.

With heartbreak.

With hope.

"Come find me, my child."
