The snowstorm refused to leave. By midday, Ryan checked the roads again and shook his head. “We’re stuck here at least one more night. The snowplow can’t keep up.”

I glanced at Ethan. His jaw tightened, but his eyes met mine with quiet heat. The secret between us was becoming harder to hide.

We spent the afternoon playing cards at the small wooden table. Ryan sat across from us, focused on the game. Under the table, Ethan’s leg pressed against mine. The simple contact sent warmth through my body. I tried to concentrate, but every time Ryan looked away, Ethan’s hand brushed my knee.

“You’ve been quiet today, Ava,” Ryan said suddenly. “Everything okay?”

I forced a smile. “Just tired from the storm.”

Ethan gave my hand a gentle squeeze under the table. The touch was quick, but it made my heart race. Guilt twisted in my stomach. Ryan trusted Ethan completely. He had no idea his best friend was falling for his little sister.

When Ryan stepped outside to clear snow from the truck, Ethan pulled me into the hallway.

“I hate hiding this,” he said softly. He rested his hands on my waist and kissed me. The kiss was warm and slow. I kissed him back, my fingers gripping his shirt. For a few seconds, the world disappeared. Only his touch mattered.

We broke apart when we heard Ryan’s boots at the door. My face felt hot. Ethan stepped back quickly and picked up a book like nothing happened.

The rest of the day passed in small moments. Ethan helped Ryan fix a loose window while I made dinner. Every time our eyes met across the room, the air felt heavy. I wanted to be close to him, but Ryan’s presence reminded me how wrong this was.

After dinner, Ryan yawned. “I’m beat. I’ll crash on the couch again.”

As soon as Ryan’s breathing grew steady, Ethan and I slipped into the bedroom. He closed the door quietly and pulled me into his arms.

“I’ve been waiting for this all day,” he whispered. We lay on the bed facing each other. He stroked my cheek gently, then kissed me again. His lips moved softly against mine. His hand rested on my back, holding me close but never pushing too far.

“I know this is risky because of Ryan,” he said between kisses. “But I don’t want to stop.”

“Me neither,” I admitted. The words felt scary but true. Being near him made me feel seen and wanted.

We stayed like that for a long time — kissing, whispering, and holding each other. The storm outside matched the storm inside me. Part of me felt terrible for hiding this from my brother. Another part never wanted this feeling to end.

Late in the night, a loud sound woke us. Ryan was moving around in the living room.

“You two awake?” he called out. “I thought I heard voices.”

Ethan answered calmly, “Just talking about the storm, bro. Go back to sleep.”

Ryan paused for a moment that felt too long. “Alright. Get some rest.”

The footsteps moved away. Ethan pulled me closer under the blanket. His heart beat fast against mine.

“That was too close,” he whispered. “If he opens this door…”

He didn’t finish the sentence. We both knew what could happen.

The next morning, the snow had finally started to slow. Ryan checked his phone. “Signal is back. I just got a message from town. They say the main road might be clear by tomorrow afternoon.”

My stomach dropped. Tomorrow we might leave the lake house. The thought of going back to normal life — pretending nothing happened between me and Ethan — felt impossible.

Ethan looked at me across the room. His eyes held a silent promise. But the real question hung in the air: how much longer could we keep this secret before everything broke?

The lake path felt different under our feet the next morning. The same trail where we once stole kisses now carried the weight of new beginnings instead of secrets. The leaves rustled gently in the breeze, and the distant call of birds filled the air with a sense of calm we hadn’t felt in weeks.Ethan walked beside me, his hand warm in mine. “The air feels different today. Like we can finally breathe without waiting for the next blow. No more constant vigilance. No more jumping at every notification.”Ryan skipped a stone across the water, watching the ripples spread. “I’ve been thinking about that trip. A few days away might help clear my head. But I’ll be back soon. Family first, always.”Grandma joined us on the path, a light jacket wrapped around her shoulders. “The lawyers updated me this morning. The cases are progressing well. We can start focusing on the future instead of the past. The family name is bruised, but we’re still standing.”I smiled at my brother. “Take the time yo

The lake shone under the midday sun as we sat on the dock the next afternoon. For the first time in weeks, there were no new messages. No new threats. Just the gentle sound of water lapping against wood. I almost don’t trust the quiet. My thoughts drifted as I dangled my feet in the cool water. After all the leaks, the betrayals, the midnight confrontations… the peace feels fragile. Like the love that began in that blizzard is finally getting a chance to breathe. But I still carry the weight of every choice I made. Every secret kiss. Every guilty night. Will that weight ever fully lift? Ethan sat beside me, his arm around my shoulders. “You’re smiling today. I like that.” Ryan skipped a stone across the water. “It’s nice to have a normal afternoon. No drama. No reporters.” Grandma joined us on the dock, a light jacket wrapped around her shoulders. “The lawyers say the major cases are moving forward. Your mother and the others won’t escape consequences. The old study desk stood in the corner of the library like it had been waiting for us again. Midnight had come and gone, but the message about the final piece kept us searching through the drawers one more time. This house holds too many layers. My thoughts drifted as I pulled open another compartment. After all the arrests and deleted files, someone still wants to drag us back into the past. I feel the exhaustion in my bones. Like the love that began in that blizzard has been tested by too many storms already.Ethan searched the shelves beside me, his movements careful but determined. “Whatever they left here, we find it together. No more letting them dictate our peace.”Ryan checked the desk drawers one by one. “The detective said they’re still monitoring. This could be the last loose thread.”Grandma dusted off an old journal. “The family has too many hidden corners. We shine light on all of them tonight.”I opened a small compartment in the desk and found a sealed envelope. My han
