I never thought death would feel like stepping into a cage.

Rain hammered down on me as I climbed out of the sleek black car, my black dress already clinging to my skin. The Looke Empire mansion loomed above me like something out of a nightmare, all stone and shadows and money that could crush a person. My mom was gone. Really gone. And now this place was supposed to be my home.

A tall figure stood at the top of the wide stairs, watching me. Even through the rain I could feel his stare burning into me.

"You must be Ella," he said, his voice deep and rough, like gravel under tires. He did not smile. He did not offer an umbrella.

I pushed wet hair out of my eyes and looked up at him. "Yeah. That's me. You are Vincent, right?"

He came down a few steps, slow and deliberate. Up close he was even more intimidating. Broad shoulders, sharp jaw, dark eyes that seemed to see straight through me. My stomach twisted in a way I did not want to name.

"Welcome to the mansion," he said flatly. "Victor is inside. He is waiting."

I tried to smile but it felt wrong. "Look, I know this is awkward. My mom and your dad got married so fast and then... everything happened. I did not ask to be dropped here."

Vincent stepped closer. Rain dripped from his hair onto his crisp white shirt. "This house has rules. Stay out of my way. Do not ask questions. Do not wander at night. Understand?"

His tone sent a shiver down my spine that had nothing to do with the cold rain. "Are you always this friendly to new family members?"

He let out a short, humorless laugh. "Family. Right. Just remember what I said."

Before I could reply, servants appeared and took my bags. Vincent turned and walked back up the stairs without another word. I followed, my heart pounding harder with every step.

Inside, the mansion felt even bigger. Marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and silence so heavy it pressed on my chest. Victor met me in the grand hallway. He looked polished and powerful, nothing like the man my mom had described in her rare happy calls.

"Ella," he said, placing a hand on my shoulder. His grip was firm. Too firm. "I am sorry for your loss. Your mother was... special. We will make sure you are comfortable here."

"Thank you," I whispered. My throat felt tight. "I still cannot believe she is gone."

Victor nodded once. "Grief takes time. Vincent will show you to your room. We can talk more tomorrow."

I glanced at Vincent. He stood a few feet away, arms crossed, watching us with an unreadable expression. "This way," he said.

We walked down a long corridor in silence. Our footsteps echoed. I hated how aware I was of him beside me. The way his arm brushed mine accidentally. The clean, masculine scent that cut through the rain smell on his clothes.

"This is your room," he said, opening a heavy door. The bedroom was bigger than my old apartment. Soft lighting, a huge bed, windows overlooking dark gardens. "Bathroom is through there. Do not leave this wing tonight."

I turned to face him. "Why? What is going on in this house? You and Victor both act like I am about to break something important."

Vincent stepped inside the room and closed the door behind him. The click sounded too loud. "You ask too many questions already."

"Maybe because no one is giving me answers," I shot back. My voice cracked a little. "I just buried my mom. Now I am stuck in a mansion with two strangers who look at me like I am a problem. Excuse me for wanting to know what the hell I walked into."

He stared at me for a long moment. Something flickered in his eyes. Heat. Anger. I could not tell which. "You think this is easy for me? Having you here?"

"What is that supposed to mean?"

Vincent moved closer. Too close. I could see the rain still clinging to his lashes. "It means some things are better left alone. Go to sleep, Ella."

He turned to leave but I grabbed his arm without thinking. His muscles tensed under my fingers. "Wait. Please. I just... I feel so alone right now."

His expression softened for half a second. Then the wall came back up. "Being alone might be safer for you."

He pulled away gently and left, shutting the door with a quiet click. I stood there shaking, not sure if it was from cold, grief, or the strange pull I felt toward a man I had just met.

I changed into dry clothes and crawled into the huge bed, but sleep would not come. Every creak in the mansion made me tense. Then I heard it. A low, deep growl echoing from somewhere far away. Not a dog. Something bigger. Wilder.

My heart slammed against my ribs. I sat up, clutching the blanket. The sound came again, closer this time. I slipped out of bed and cracked open my bedroom door, peering into the dark hallway.

A shadow moved at the far end. Tall. Human shaped, but the way it moved was wrong. Too smooth. Too powerful.

I stepped out before I could stop myself. "Hello? Vincent? Is that you?"

The shadow froze. Then it turned. Vincent stepped into a patch of moonlight coming through a tall window. His shirt was gone. His chest rose and fell like he had been running. Sweat glistened on his skin. His eyes looked different. Brighter.

"What are you doing out here?" he demanded, voice low and rough.

"I heard something. It sounded like... I do not know. An animal. Are you okay?"

He walked toward me slowly. Each step made my pulse race faster. "Go back to your room, Ella."

"No. Tell me what is happening. Why do you look like you just fought something?"

Vincent stopped right in front of me. Heat rolled off his body. His eyes dropped to my mouth for a second before snapping back up. "You have no idea how dangerous it is for you to be here. How dangerous I am."

I swallowed hard. "Then why do I feel safer standing next to you than I have in days?"

He laughed softly, but there was pain in it. "Because you do not know me yet."

I reached up and touched his chest before I could think better of it. His skin burned under my fingers. "Then let me know you. Just a little."

Vincent caught my wrist. His grip was firm but not painful. "Careful what you ask for. Curious girls do not last long here."

His face was inches from mine now. I could feel his breath on my lips. My body leaned toward him like it had a mind of its own. The air crackled between us. For one wild second I thought he might kiss me.

Instead he stepped back, dropping my wrist like it burned him. "Get inside your room. Lock the door."

"Vincent..."

"Now, Ella."

I backed into my room, heart hammering. As I closed the door I caught one last glimpse of him. His eyes were glowing faintly in the dark. Golden. Not human.

I locked the door with shaking hands and pressed my back against it. What the hell had I just seen? And why did part of me want to open the door and run straight back to him?

Outside in the hallway, I heard a low growl again. This time it sounded almost like my name.

I slid down to the floor, breathing fast. Welcome to your new life, Ella. Try not to get eaten alive.

The symbols on the walls were watching me.I ran my fingers over the strange carvings hidden behind a tapestry in the east wing. They looked ancient. Almost alive. My heart would not slow down after what I overheard in the kitchen this morning. Two servants whispering about the heir’s true nature. About how the full moon changed everything.I needed answers. Vincent would not give them to me, so I had to find them myself.Footsteps echoed behind me. Strong hands grabbed my arm and spun me around. Vincent’s face was dark with anger."What the hell do you think you are doing?" he demanded, dragging me down the hallway. "I told you to stop digging."I tried to pull free but his grip was firm. "Let go of me. I heard them talking about you. The heir. What are you hiding?"He did not answer until we reached the empire tower. He pulled me into his private office and locked the door. The city skyline stretched out behind him through floor to ceiling windows, but I could only focus on the stor

I could still taste him on my lips when he pushed me away.Vincent stepped back like I had burned him, chest heaving, eyes wild with that golden glow fading slowly. "We cannot do this. Forget what you saw out there. Forget the wolf. Forget me.""Forget you?" I laughed but it came out broken. "How am I supposed to forget the way you kissed me like I was oxygen? Like you needed me to breathe?"He ran both hands through his hair, looking tortured. "You do not belong in my world, Ella. You are human. Soft. Good. I am none of those things.""You felt pretty human when you had me against that wall," I shot back, stepping closer even though my legs were still shaking. "Tell me the truth. That wolf was you. I am not crazy."Vincent looked away. "Knowing the truth will only get you killed faster.""Then let it," I whispered. "Because living here without answers, without you, feels worse than dying."He stared at me for a long moment, something raw and painful crossing his face. "Go to bed. Ple

Gunshots shattered everything I thought I knew about this house. We were sitting at the long dining table that evening when it happened. Victor had insisted on a small welcome dinner. Candles flickered between us. The food smelled expensive but tasted like ash in my mouth."You have barely touched your plate, Ella," Victor said, watching me carefully. "Is the meal not to your liking?"I forced a smile. "It is fine. Everything is just... a lot. Thank you for doing this."Vincent sat across from me again. His eyes had not left my face since we sat down. After what happened in his study earlier, the tension between us felt thick enough to choke on."You seem distracted," Vincent said suddenly. His voice was low. "Still thinking about things you should not be?"I met his stare head on. "Maybe I am thinking about how you kissed me and then told me to forget it. That is kind of hard to ignore."Victor set his fork down slowly. "Kiss? What is going on between you two?""Nothing," Vincent ans

His touch still burned on my skin when I woke up the next morning.I walked into the dining room with my heart in my throat. Sunlight poured through tall windows, but it did nothing to warm the chill in the air. Victor sat at the head of the long table like a king. Vincent was already there, coffee in hand, looking like he had not slept either."You look tired, Ella," Victor said smoothly. "Did you not rest well?"I sat down slowly, feeling both their eyes on me. "Not really. The house makes a lot of noise at night."Vincent set his cup down harder than necessary. "Maybe you should stay in your room like I told you."Victor raised an eyebrow. "Is there a problem?""No problem," Vincent answered quickly, but his jaw stayed tight. "Just giving our new guest some advice."I looked straight at him. "Advice or orders? Because last night felt a lot like the second one."Vincent met my stare. The heat in his eyes made my stomach flip. "Whatever keeps you safe."Victor cleared his throat. "El
