Now that I know that you're guilty and that you purposely recorded us, I don't feel bad for whatever it is I'm going to do. His words hit harder than Noah's. I stare at Enzo through the blur of my tears, my chest tightening so painfully I can barely breathe. He thinks I did it on purpose. He actually believes I recorded them because I wanted something to use against him. "No..." I whisper, shaking my head helplessly. "Enzo, that's not..." The front door suddenly open. There's a pause, and then I hear Aunt Joan's voice. "What on earth is going on?" She appears, two grocery bags hanging from her hands. Her eyes travel across the room... Marcus standing protectively in front of me, Noah glaring at everyone, Enzo beside him, and me... crying so hard I can barely stay upright. The bags slip from her fingers onto the floor. "N-Noah?" Her face hardens almost immediately. "What are you doing here?" Nobody answers. She doesn't wait for one. Her gaze lands on my face again, taking in my swollen eyes and trembling shoulders. "What happened?" she asks. "Why is she crying?" Still nobody speaks. Then Noah does. "This doesn't concern you, Aunt Joan." "The hell it doesn't." She walks further into the foyer, stopping directly beside me. One arm wraps around my shoulders instinctively, pulling me against her side. The warmth almost makes me cry harder. "You need to leave." Noah lets out a laugh. "I'm not leaving without my sister." "I wasn't asking." "I'm taking Nova home." "No." Aunt Joan's voice is calm, but there's steel underneath it. "You're leaving. Right now." "No." Marcus sighs quietly and I shut my eyes. Please... Please don't make this worse. Aunt Joan folds her arms. "You have exactly five seconds to walk out of my house." "I'm not going anywhere." "Four." Noah scoffs. "Three." "You can't stop me." "Two." Noah doesn't move. Aunt Joan pulls her phone out of her handbag. "One." She unlocks it without hesitation. "Fine. I'll call your parents and tell them you're standing in my house refusing to leave after I told you to. I'll also let them know the way you've been speaking to your sister." That finally gets Noah's attention. His jaw clenches. "You wouldn't." "Oh, sweetheart." She smiles, though there's absolutely no warmth in it. "Try me." Noah knows she's not bluffing. He clicks his tongue in annoyance. "This isn't over." He points a finger at me. "You've already destroyed enough. Don't make it worse." He turns toward the door and Enzo does too. Before he leaves, our eyes meet. I'm sure I'm seeing different emotions but I'm not seeing sympathy. He follows Noah out without another word. The front door slams behind them. It starts with ragged breathes, and then the tears start flowing. My knees give the fuck out. "Oh, sweetheart..." Aunt Joan says, rushing forward. The sob that leaves me is ugly. Everything I've been holding together completely falls apart. I bury my face against her shoulder, crying so hard my chest hurts. "I didn't mean to..." I choke out between sobs. "I swear I didn't... I never wanted this..." "I know." She rubs my back slowly. "I know, baby." Marcus kneels beside us, looking absolutely furious. His fists are still clenched. I don't think he's ever looked this angry. Aunt Joan looks over my head at him. "Marcus." He immediately looks up. "How did Noah even know she was here?" Marcus doesn't answer. He just looks up at Kol and Chloe and he points. They suddenly become very interested in the floor. Aunt Joan follows his gaze and his finger. "Tell me you didn't. How did they find out?" She shouts. "I was just driving Chloe to get a dress..." "A dress?" Aunt Joan says in disbelief. "A dress?" Nobody dares answer. She pinches the bridge of her nose before letting out a slow breath. "I told every single one of you that Nova was staying here because she needed peace. Sarah begged me not to let Noah know. And what did you do?" Nobody looks up. "I'm sorry, Mom," Chloe whispers. "No." Aunt Joan shakes her head. "Sorry doesn't fix this." Her hand stretches out. "Phones." Their head snaps up. "What?" "I said... phones. Now." They reluctantly pull their phones from their pockets. Marcus walks around collecting Chloe's phone first and then Kol's. He hands them to his mother. She stacks them together. "You're all grounded." She points toward the staircase. "No phones. No television. No going out with friends. And the both of you will be helping me around this house until I decide you've earned your privileges back." "Mom..." "No." Her voice leaves no room for argument. "You broke my trust." Aunt Joan looks down at me, still clinging to her. Then she gently brushes the hair away from my face. "Come on. Let's get you upstairs."NOVAAs much as I need that hug from Ava right now, I'm so thrown off by what she says preceding it. That she's not supposed to? What the hell is that supposed to mean? "I don't..." I raise my hand, shaking my head. "I don't want that hug right now."She twists her lips, looking everywhere but at me. Her eyes are roaming around random things and she won't even look at me. "So, what do you want?" "What I want is for you to explain what you meant by that statement. You're not supposed to? I don't understand what you mean by that."Ava does a low whistle. "I don't want you to be upset about this. No hard feelings. But my mom saw the scandal." Oh no. This better not be what I think it is. I don't want to hear shit about Ava's mom thinking that I'm trash when I haven't done anything wrong at all."She warned me about you and...""I don't know what to say."Ava shrugs. "Then you don't have to say anything.""No, I think I do. I think you are the most manipulative, two-faced, bitch I've
NOVAMy mouth opens, whilst my eyes are moving, they finally settle on Bethany who's behind Caleb now. She winks at me, mouthing a 'Make sure you kiss him' before retreating and leaving me with Caleb."Um..." I glance down at my legs, breathing in a little. Sure, I like the way he's not laughing with the girl from earlier and he's with me now. But then... I don't like the way Bethany pushed me on him and now I don't have any fucking words to say. It's more like I forgot what to say. What will I possibly say to him in this moment? "Speechless?" Caleb tilts his head.I let out a nervous laugh. "Oh no. I just... My brother asked me to stay away from you." I say the one rational thing I can think of."Did he now?" Caleb doesn't look surprised one bit."Yes." I nod, while I'm still racking my brain for anything to say. Bethany said to flirt. I don't know how to fucking flirt. I'm not a flirt. Never have been."Look, we're both adults right?" Caleb asks."In Highschool." I put in. That mak
NOVAAfter what happened with my mom and Noah last night, and after the text I sent Caleb... I don't know. I'm feeling pretty good about myself this morning. I'm not even fucking joking. I fucking devoured the avocado toast mom made me for breakfast and I'm actually humming my head right now to a rap music blasting through mom's speaker in her car."You feeling good baby?" Mom looks at me. Her smile is infectious. I return it with mine, nodding my head and moving my leg to the beat of the song."That's what I'm talking about. You should feel this good everyday. I like the energy today. Anything different?" I don't know if I should tell her or not. I basically don't tell my mom everything, but I do tell her some basic things that I feel she's supposed to know. Like this. I'm sure she'd be super excited for me. I just... I just don't trust her enough to keep it from Noah and Enzo or Dad. Emphasis on my father. He detests extracurriculars and would make me change schools if he knew abo
NOVA"Noah, no. I will not have to talk to your sister like that, not when I'm standing in front of you.""But mom...""No." "She's fucking with a guy she shouldn't be around at all. He's bad news. If you care about your daughter you'd tell her to stay away from that guy."Mom looks at me, and I can see the doubt that flashes across her face. She's skeptical of whether she should ask me anything about what Noah is sprouting. "Ask her. She'll tell you." Noah probes mom."Nova, what does he mean?" I resist the urge to say something disrespectful. It's hard... but I can. "Caleb is my friend." "You don't know him.""I know him well enough to know the kind of person he is. And don't talk to me, both of you.""Nova, stop. Don't be rude to your...""I'm tired of everyone treating me like trash just because I made a mistake. I don't care about the others at school. I care about my own brother! He's been treating me so badly and I didn't even do shit to him! It was just Enzo and I apologiz
NOVA"He'll do it. He's crazy like that." Liam grins, winking at me from his sprawl on the sofa. Not that I believe Liam or anything, but for some reason, I don't want to be here anymore. "I think that's my cue to leave," I say, pushing myself up from the plush cushions of the couch, a slight sigh escaping my lips.Caleb's eyes widen slightly. "I was joking," he says quickly, taking a step toward me, his hands raising in a placating gesture."I know," I answer, giving him a small smile that doesn't quite reach my eyes. "I just think it's late and I don't want my mom to be worried." A convenient excuse, but not entirely untrue.Caleb relaxes, nodding in understanding. He runs a hand through his hair. "Let me drop you off then."He gets up, tossing the unopened first-aid kit onto the cushion beside Liam, who simply watches us with an amused smirk, already reaching for the remote."Goodbye Nova. Do you think I'll be seeing you anytime soon?" He asks as I get to the door.I shrug, feignin
NOVA"What the hell?" My voice is a whisper even though I know Caleb is on a call and is a little bit far from where we're standing."What do you mean... what the hell? The task? The one I gave to you? The offer to be a..."I wave a hand in front of Bethany's face. "Yes, yes. I know all about that. I don't need a reminder. I just don't... I don't get what you mean by that?"Bethany folds her hands, glaring at me. "What I mean?" She repeats.I heave a sigh. "I mean I do get you but... I just...""Nova Graham! Are you going to talk to Caleb, make him fall for you and break his heart? The sisters want to see if you are a material for..."I can't with this girl right now. Caleb is still pacing but I'm sure at any moment from now he'll turn and see us. What if his call ends now and he walks over to us and hears what Bethany is saying?"Look, this is bad timing." I mutter."Why are you murmuring? He can't hear...""I don't care. He's my friend." I say, my frown deepening.Bethany smirks. "O
