Chapter 1

It was only then that Clara Gunter noticed me sitting in the corner. She wasn't the least bit embarrassed, though. Instead, she smirked and continued, "What's the matter, Lillian? Why are you being so quiet? Did I actually hit the nail on the head, and now you're too scared to speak up?"

She smiled and leaned into Nicholas Jordan, my fiance, her lithe, pliant body resting against his in silent provocation.

In that instant, the crowd's probing looks shifted toward me.

I never deigned to address rumors with people who didn't matter. "I would have missed out on hearing such an excellently crafted story if I had spoken up."

I pulled Nicholas away from Clara after saying that, only for Nicholas to recoil as if he had been electrocuted and stand by Clara's side.

Nicholas looked furious. He was so desperate to know the truth that he didn't even notice me standing there, looking pale and embarrassed. "Where did you see such information? You'd better not think that you can frame my fiancee just because we're best friends, Clara! Lillian and I are getting married soon!"

It seemed as if he were defending me, but I could tell from the way he had just stepped back that he believed Clara's accusations. I couldn't help but feel an unbearable pain gripping my chest.

Clara noticed that my face had gone completely pale and mistook it for a sign of admission, her expression turning both smug and disdainful.

"You know that my uncle works for the police, right? You see, I felt something was off about Lillian before this, considering how she coincidentally had a fever during a heavy snowstorm and collapsed right by your car. You rescued her back then, and she had clung to you ever since.

"It looks exactly like a setup to scam you into marriage! I'm your best friend, so I didn't want to see you get conned. I had my uncle look up her ID info, and as soon as he checked, it turned out that Lillian is a notorious gold digger!"

Those around us erupted into murmurs, while Clara crossly held up her phone for everyone to see. "I've gone to so much trouble for you, yet you're being completely ungrateful about it, Nicholas!"

Nicholas snatched the phone and stared fixedly at the screen, noting the name Lillian Naughton displayed there. Just as Clara claimed, there were only two individuals by that name—one was the prestigious heiress of the Naughton family, and the other was an infamous marriage fraudster and gold digger.

It just so happened that the system was undergoing an update; neither profile could display any pictures at that moment.

In that instant, the temperature around Nicholas plummeted. He slammed the phone onto the ground in irritation and said, "There isn't even a picture showing that this is the Lillian I know, so maybe she really is…"

Nicholas' voice trailed off. He glared at me with bloodshot eyes as he confronted me, forcefully seizing my wrist. "Go on—say something! Did you do it on purpose when you collapsed by my car with a fever back then, Lillian?"

I could feel the throbbing pain in my wrist, though it was nothing compared to the pain in my chest. I had intended to tell him at our wedding that I was the heiress of the Naughton family in Halport and that I would approve his family's business proposal with the Naughton Group right then as a wedding gift.

I couldn't help but feel an unprecedented sense of betrayal after seeing him turn this furious over a few unreliable rumors. I barely managed to ask through gritted teeth, "Do you not believe me, Nicholas?"

In the meantime, the crowd whispered among themselves on the side. "You can tell she was caught red-handed! Lillian and Mr. Jordan's first meeting was her collapsing right in front of the Jordan family's limited-edition Rolls-Royce!"

"He's actually marrying her without even looking into her background. He had clearly run into a seasoned conwoman who was deliberately targeting him!"

"Mr. Jordan has bought her so much jewelry over the past few months, yet she's hardly worn any of it. Did she sell them off?"

Nicholas' expression turned even more grim after hearing their remarks.

Someone even began making personal attacks, saying, "You can tell just by looking at Lillian's face that she has gotten plastic surgery. She got herself a pretty face just to seduce men; after all, no one is born looking that perfect!"

Hearing the crowd murmuring in agreement, Clara threw a punch at Nicholas and said in frustration, "You're clearly blinded by her looks! How could you still not believe me even with all the evidence before you?

"I should just sit back and watch you get played! Lillian is the type of woman—beautiful and manipulative—who loves fools like you!"

No matter how much jewelry I had, I wasn't about to layer it on and parade around like a gaudy peacock.

I refused to tolerate Clara's relentless slander and be treated like a fool any longer, so I said coldly, "You'd better watch what you say—malicious defamation can get you behind bars. What makes you think I couldn't possibly be the heiress of the Naughton family?"

Nicholas, however, interpreted my remarks as threats. He shoved me back with enough force to make me stumble, his gaze turning dark and hostile. "How dare you threaten Clara right in front of me!"

He then declared coldly, "Go inform all the guests that the wedding has been canceled!"

Upon hearing that, I couldn't help but laugh out loud. Nicholas might as well have claimed it was all a misunderstanding. At least then I might have thought he was capable of holding his ground. I looked at him indifferently and asked, "You claim you couldn't back down in front of your friends, but what about my baby? You personally caused the death of our baby, Nicholas!"Nicholas' face turned deathly pale as he looked down at my belly. He was so shocked by the revelation that he lost his footing and dropped to the floor. He was shaking violently as he stammered, "Y-You were actually pregnant?"I had no desire to offer him any further explanations, so I directly pushed him aside and closed the door. That day, Mom and Dad immediately booked a flight back to Halport. Before leaving, Dad filed a lawsuit in my name against Clara for slander and defamation. At the same time, he pulled Gunter Group's retail counters from the Naughton Group. In the meantime, once the Gunters were targe

Having just acted out of fierce protection for Clara, Mark and Carrie fell into a state of panic upon seeing Mom and Dad, whom they assumed had already left for Halport. The shock only deepened when they realized their retail counters had been stripped from the Naughton Group.Naughton Group held a monopoly over high-end shopping malls throughout Halport and Caldoria, where only top-tier brands were granted entry, and the clientele required asset verification of over a billion dollars, making them the core consumers in both Bellevue and Halport. The Gunter family had spent six months staking out Halport last year just to get Naughton Group to agree to a partnership. They had assumed they could intimidate me since I was alone, but now their faces had turned deathly pale. They immediately began bowing and scraping, saying, "It's nothing more than a minor squabble between our children, Mr. Naughton, so surely it shouldn't affect our business relationship!"Dad let out a derisive chuc

Those people brought by Clara's parents wanted to drag me up from the hospital bed, but the bodyguards obstructed their path. As such, they resorted to throwing and smashing objects in the hospital ward because they had nowhere else to vent their anger."Who cares if Naughton Group is the biggest deal in Halport? You're currently in Bellevue! You don't get to act this lawlessly on my turf! You ought to know that you can't throw your weight around and bully my daughter just because you're rich!"I looked at the hatred written all over Clara's face before turning to her parents. "Did Clara ever tell you why she got slapped?"I had someone pull up the recording of Clara's live stream, along with the surveillance footage of her calling me a gold digger who tricked men into marriage. I held the evidence in front of the Gunters and said coldly, "Clara was the one who started this. She even hired two beggars to pose as my parents just to destroy my reputation. "You stormed into my hosp

It was then that the bodyguard threw Doreen aside.Doreen kept struggling and yelling, "I was standing up for you against that shameless bitch, Mrs. Naughton! How could you let your bodyguard lay hands on me?"Mom's gaze was cold and piercing as she looked down at the woman sprawled on the ground. She then spoke in a frigid, menacing tone, snarling, "That bitch you spoke of is my daughter! You actually have the audacity to insult and attack her right in front of me, huh? It's clear to me that the Jordan family never treated my daughter like a human being!"Nicholas' parents' expression shifted instantly as they looked at me in disbelief. "W-What do you mean? Didn't Nicholas say that you were just a mere gold digger? How could you be the heiress of the Naughton family?"Doreen was the first to snap out of it. She seemed to realize the endless perks of being in-laws with the Naughton family, as she set aside everything else and shamelessly approached me with a flattering smile. "It

Mom and Dad had always treated me like their absolute world, meaning they were never going to let anyone who mistreated me off easy. They handed wooden batons to the bodyguards with grim expressions and said, "You are to hit them back twice as hard, based on the number of times they hit Lillian earlier."That pair of fake parents tried to scramble back in terror, but the bodyguards seized them by their legs, pinning them completely in place. Their agonized shrieks echoed through the surroundings, causing the other men who had verbally abused and assaulted me to shrink back in fear. They finally recognized Mom and Dad as the all-powerful magnates of Halport after witnessing their commanding demeanor and the emerald pendant unique to the Naughton family. They fell to their knees in sheer panic, pleading for mercy, but Mom and Dad ordered someone to get the surveillance footage, saying, "You'd better not think you can get away from this!"Nicholas was the most terrified of all. It was then that Mom suddenly arrived with a large entourage of bodyguards, surrounding everyone at the scene. She then ordered in a voice brimming with fury, "Go take down everyone here who picked on my daughter just now. Don't let a single one go! I'd like to see who thinks they're above the law here!"I watched Mom and Dad approach, my eyes instantly welling up with tears as a wave of hurt and grievance washed over me.In the meantime, the pair of beggars, intimidated by Mom and Dad's commanding presence, didn't dare stir up any more trouble. They instantly scrambled to their feet on all fours. They tried to slip through a gap in the crowd unnoticed, but the bodyguards blocked their path.Nicholas and Clara spotted the emerald pendant unique to the Naughton family on Dad and recognized it right away, breaking out into a cold sweat.Clara, still unwilling to accept the truth, cautiously stepped forward toward Mom.
