Chapter 5

Kath could already feel painful blisters forming on her feet from walking for hours.

The sky was gradually darkening, and evening was fast approaching.

Her stomach growled loudly. She hadn't eaten anything since that morning.

She hadn't even had the chance to eat after arriving at her grandfather's mansion. Instead, she had rushed straight to his bedroom, hoping to see him.

Now she was starving.

She had no money.

And she had nowhere to go.

She looked up at the darkening sky.

Where am I supposed to go?

Where am I going to sleep tonight?

As she continued walking, she passed by a luxurious restaurant. Through the glass windows, she saw families and couples happily enjoying their meals.

The sight only made her hungrier.

She couldn't help whispering bitterly to herself.

"How lucky they are..."

They looked so carefree, laughing and eating together, while she felt as if her entire world had collapsed in a single day.

The more she thought about everything that had happened, the hotter the corners of her eyes became.

She wanted to cry again.

She was so tired.

So tired of living.

Her gaze drifted toward the busy highway where countless vehicles sped past without slowing down.

A single step...

What if I just let one of those cars hit me?

Wouldn't it all be over then?

Wouldn't one brief moment of pain be better than living through endless suffering every single day?

She no longer knew what to do with her life.

Hope was slowly slipping away.

She had been walking for hours, yet not a single person had stopped to ask if she was alright.

No one had offered help.

No one had even glanced at her twice.

No one cared.

No one worried about her.

No one even thought about her.

But then again...

Who was she for anyone to care?

Even her own family had abandoned her.

Why was she foolish enough to expect kindness from strangers when her own blood relatives had treated her like she didn't exist?

Kath sniffled and wiped away another stream of tears as she continued walking.

Without any destination in mind, she simply kept moving forward.

Maybe...

Just maybe...

Someone kind would eventually come along.

Another hour passed.

By then, exhaustion, hunger, and heartbreak had completely drained her strength.

Her vision was beginning to blur.

Her knees trembled with every step.

She felt as though she could collapse at any second.

Even her body had begun to shake uncontrollably.

The road she had wandered onto was now eerily quiet.

Very few vehicles passed by.

She looked around.

Where am I...?

She didn't recognize the place anymore.

Still, she silently thanked God that no ill-intentioned strangers had approached her.

Then...

A pair of bright headlights appeared in the distance.

Summoning every last bit of strength she had left, Kath slowly staggered toward the middle of the road.

She raised a trembling hand, hoping to stop the approaching vehicle.

But before the car could even reach her—

Her legs finally gave out.

Everything around her spun.

Darkness swallowed her whole.

"What happened? Did you hit someone?"

Silvia asked anxiously from the back seat.

The car had stopped so abruptly that she had nearly been thrown forward.

When she demanded an explanation, her driver hurriedly told her that a woman had suddenly collapsed in front of the vehicle.

She hadn't seen it herself.

She had been busy checking her employer's schedule on her phone.

Immediately slipping her phone into her handbag, Silvia hurried out of the car.

The moment she saw a young woman lying unconscious in the middle of the road, she instinctively covered her mouth in shock.

"Oh my God..."

"Help me carry her!" she cried frantically to the driver. "We have to get her to the hospital immediately!"

Without hesitation, the driver obeyed.

Together, they carefully lifted the unconscious woman into the back seat.

Silvia couldn't hide the panic in her eyes.

"Oh my God... What did you do to her?" she asked her driver anxiously while checking the woman's pale face.

The woman remained unconscious.

Silvia's heart pounded violently.

Please don't let her be dead...

What if her driver had accidentally killed someone?

What if they ended up facing criminal charges?

Her trembling hand gently brushed a few strands of hair away from the woman's face.

"Please... be alright," she whispered, silently praying that nothing serious had happened.

She kept glancing between the unconscious woman and the road ahead.

What if she had suffered a head injury?

"Hurry!" Silvia urged, her voice shaking.

"We have to get her to the hospital as fast as possible."

With trembling hands, she pulled out her phone once more.

She needed to call her employer immediately and inform her about what had happened.
