LUCAS

The Humanities building was buzzing with activity. Students chatted and laughed amongst themselves.

I headed down the corridor where the faculty offices were.

Offices lined both sides of the hallway. A few professors chatted near a coffee machine before disappearing into another corridor.

Adrian’s office was located near the end of the hall.

The plaque on his door read: Assistant Professor Adrian Frost. Department of Psychology.

I knocked once.

There was a pause before his voice came thro

LUCASSaturday nights were usually my favorite part of the week. Loud music, alcohol, questionable decisions, friends… yeah, sign me the fuck up.Normally, I’d be in my element.Tonight… Not so much.Noah nudged my shoulder as we squeezed through the crowded living room of the fraternity house.“Now, aren’t you happy I dragged you here?”“Meh. Not so much. The party looks dead.”He rolled his eyes. “You’re full of complaints tonight. You complained the entire way here. It’s no fun.”“I can leave.”“No you won’t.”Unfortunately, he knew me too well.Music thundered through the house, shaking the floor beneath my sneakers. The room overflowed with people talking, dancing or shouting over one another. Someone had already started an impromptu game of beer pong in the dining room.Rina appeared out of nowhere, handing us plastic cups.“There you both are,” she shouted over the music. “I’ve been waiting.”Noah snorted. “You can blame Lucas for that. I had to drag his ass out of bed. It wasn

ADRIANDaniel was already seated in a booth in the café when I arrived.“There he is.” He raised his coffee in greeting when he spotted me. “The man who cancels plans every other week.”“I’ve only canceled twice.”“That’s two times too many.”“It’s not my fault my work schedule doesn’t align with yours,” I said as I settled across from him in the booth. He’d already ordered for me. A steaming mug of espresso. As usual, he knew what I liked. He grinned. “As long as you know my worth. You’re not the only one who’s busy.”An hour later, we’d moved from catching up to talking about work.Daniel leaned back. “Is there anything you want to tell me?”I tilted my head. “What do you mean?”“I know that face. It’s the one that says something is weighing on your mind.”“To be fair, something is always weighing on my mind.”“Exactly.” He tilted his head as he studied me carefully. “So what is it this time?”I stirred my coffee. “I did something…” I searched for the right words. “...that I should

ADRIANI wasn’t one to curse, but all day, all that was blaring in my head were curse words directed at Lucas Carter.Damn him. That was all I could think of.It was what was in my head when I opened my eyes the following morning and the first thing that popped into my head was the feeling of his lips against mine.It was what I thought about when I stared at the red marks on my neck in my bathroom mirror. It was what I thought as I ate my breakfast and I remembered the last time he was here and made breakfast for me.It was also what I thought when I sat on the couch to watch the television and I remembered the way his shirtless self had lounged on my couch the night he stayed over. I had woken up in the middle of the night to get a glass of water and I hadn’t been able to resist staring at him for a moment too long while he was asleep.Let’s just say he looked better when it wasn’t dark and I wasn’t drunk out of my mind.Every time I closed my eyes, the memory came back with infuria

LUCASHe gasped into my mouth, his body locking up instantly. I could feel the tension in his muscles. He was stiff, almost frozen. He didn’t lean in, but he didn’t pull away either. His fingers curled tightly into the fabric of my jacket, gripping me with a desperation that contradicted his frozen posture. He remained rigid, his lips pressed tight as if he could physically lock out the desire I knew was simmering beneath the surface. But I knew his breaking point. I’d learned enough that first night.I pressed closer, molding my body to his, letting him feel exactly how much I wanted him right there, in the middle of his sterile, professional sanctuary.I shifted the angle, my tongue tracing the seam of his lips with a slow, teasing pressure. I felt a shudder ripple through him, and then, finally, the dam broke.Adrian let out a soft, broken moan that vibrated against my mouth. His lips parted as he invited me in.The moment he gave in, everything changed. The stiffness vanished, rep

LUCASI didn’t open the letter.Of course, I didn’t. I would be insane to.But I also didn’t throw it away either. Which said a lot about me than I refused to admit.Instead, I did what a completely normal, rational person would do— I stared at it on my desk for most of the night while I pretended not to.Eventually, I’d given up and tossed it in my drawer, clicking it shut.Out of sight, out of mind.Or at least that was what I thought. It didn’t work.Which was why I’d decided I needed a distraction. And what better distraction than the other thing that had been plaguing my mind lately? As I made my way to Adrian’s office that morning after class, I tried to think things through.Like what I hoped to achieve by going there. If giving in to this… temptation was the right thing to do. If this wasn’t going to just make things even more complicated than they already were.I only thought about those things for about… thirty seconds before I stopped giving a fuck.A lot of people would ca

LUCASWhen Dad texted me that morning saying he was in Monteview for work and asking if we could meet for coffee, my first instinct had been to ignore it.It would’ve been easier. Less complicated. But eventually, after staring at the message for almost an hour, I’d capitulated and I’d replied reluctantly with ‘Sure’.Which was how I now found myself pushing open the glass doors off a quiet café a few blocks away from campus. The warm scent of roasted coffee beans wrapped around me immediately.Soft music drifted through the hidden speakers. Students sat with laptops open, people talked quietly over their mugs of coffee, and sunlight poured through the large windows overlooking the street.Dad was already there. He stood the moment he saw me.“Lucas.”He gave me his familiar warm smile as I allowed myself to take him in.With his dark hair, now sprinkled with a little bit of grey, and his tall, lean frame, a lot of people would refer to him as handsome.Unfortunately, I hadn’t taken a
