šŸ–±ļø Sammy šŸ–±ļø

I closed the car door as carefully as I could. Every instinct in me wanted to slam it hard enough to rip it off its hinges, but I couldn’t.

Jayden was finally asleep. After so many minutes of bleeding, shaking and fighting through pain that no healer could explain, he had finally drifted off against the back seat. His face looked exhausted even in sleep, his brows still drawn together like his body refused to let him rest.

The last thing I wanted was to wake him.

I rested my forehead against the roof of the car and let out a long breath.

ā€œFuckā€¦ā€

Victor chose death. Why couldn’t he just stay dead? The thought hit me so suddenly that I almost laughed at myself.

Yes… I had missed the blood sucker and I mourned him. Hell, I’d cried harder than I ever thought I would.

For ten years I’d lived with the guilt of knowing my biggest rival sacrifice himself for the two people he loved most. I respected him. I loved him in my own way. He had become a part of me. But these last four months…These last four months had been hell.

Every single day Jayden woke up in pain and that damned mark burned deeper into his skin. Every single day I watched the strongest man I knew slowly fall apart while I stood there completely helpless.

The resentment I’d buried with love had somehow crawled back out of its grave. I hated him for this and that even after dying, he still had the power to make Jayden suffer.

ā€œStop cursing the dead, Sammy.ā€

Jane’s voice pulled me from my thoughts. I looked over at her while pulling a cigarette from my pocket.

She folded her arms.

ā€œYou know Jay hates it when you smoke.ā€

ā€œI know.ā€

ā€œSo why are you lighting one?ā€

ā€œBecause if I don’t, I’ll start punching trees.ā€

She sighed.

ā€œFair enough.ā€

I lit the cigarette anyway and took a long drag before looking back at the car.

ā€œā€¦Do you think he’s alive?ā€

Jane followed my gaze.

ā€œI do.ā€

ā€œIt would be good if he’s alive.ā€ Another drag. ā€œBut can he stop breaking my Jay just to announce his resurrection?ā€

The words came out harsher than I intended.

Jane didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she leaned against the car beside me.

ā€œHe’s alive, Sammy….. The way Jayden’s body is reacting tells me the Dragon Prince has returned.ā€ She hesitated. ā€œButā€¦ā€

I turned to look at her. ā€œWill you stop speaking in riddles and just tell me what the ā€˜but’ is?ā€

Jane remained quiet for several seconds. ā€œYou saw the headquarters of the supreme burnt into ashes.ā€

ā€œIndeed.ā€ I nodded, I can never forget that day.

ā€œYou saw nothing but ashes that day, nothing was saved.ā€ She looked me straight in the eyes. ā€œEveryone in that building burned.ā€

I nodded.

ā€œThere weren’t even bones left behind.ā€

The cigarette between my fingers suddenly didn’t taste so good anymore.

Jane continued.

ā€œSo tell meā€¦ā€

ā€œWhat if Victor body can never be recovered?ā€

I frowned, that is the concept I don’t also understand, he fucking burnt into ashes so how the hell is he alive.

ā€œWhat ifā€¦ā€ She paused. ā€œā€¦Victor was reborn?ā€

I stared at her.

ā€œā€¦Reborn?ā€

She nodded.

ā€œWhat’s that supposed to mean?ā€

Jane blinked at me. ā€œSo much for being the Supreme King.ā€

I rolled my eyes. ā€œOh, here we go.ā€

ā€œDid you even read the history books my husband spent months collecting for you?ā€

ā€œā€¦Jayden read them.ā€

She pinched the bridge of her nose.

ā€œWell that can’t be helped since he’s the brainy one between you two.ā€

ā€œI was busy.ā€

ā€œYou were sleeping.ā€

ā€œI refuse to confirm or deny that accusation.ā€

Jane laughed despite herself before becoming serious again.

ā€œThere are records… Very old records.ā€

ā€œAncient creatures whose souls returned after death.ā€

I frowned.

ā€œI thought those were myths.ā€

ā€œSo did everyone.ā€

She looked toward the sleeping Jayden.

ā€œUntil his mate mark came back.ā€

Silence settled between us. My mind raced through everything she had said.

If… If she was right… Then Victor hadn’t returned from the dead. He had started over.

ā€œAs someone else?ā€

Jane nodded.

ā€œPossibly.ā€

ā€œA child?ā€

ā€œPossibly.ā€

ā€œA newborn?ā€

ā€œPossibly.ā€

I stared at her in horror.

ā€œSo your brilliant plan is to send warriors across the kingdoms looking for every baby born four months ago?ā€

ā€œIt makes the most sense.ā€

I rubbed both hands over my face.

ā€œSo what happens if they actually find him?ā€

Jane raised an eyebrow.

ā€œWhat do you mean?ā€

ā€œWhat do you mean, what do I mean?ā€ I pointed dramatically toward the sleeping Jayden.

ā€œIf Victor is really a babyā€¦ā€

I pointed at myself.

ā€œā€¦then what?ā€

ā€œJay and I are supposed to raise Baby Victor?ā€

Jane opened her mouth. Closed it again. Then… ā€œTorrrrā€¦ā€ She made a face somewhere between horror and disbelief.

ā€œOh.ā€

ā€œOh?ā€

ā€œOh.ā€

I stared at her. ā€œThat’s your response?ā€

She looked genuinely disturbed now.

ā€œā€¦This is actually screwed up.ā€

ā€œNo kidding.ā€

I started pacing. ā€œJayden and I don’t even have children yet.ā€

ā€œAnd now you’re telling me there’s a chance our first child is going to beā€¦ā€

I couldn’t even finish the sentence.

ā€œā€¦Victor?ā€

Jane slowly nodded. I stopped walking.

ā€œWait.ā€ I pointed at her. ā€œYou’re kidding….Please tell me you’re kidding.ā€ Jane loves pranking me, this has to be one of those crazy pranks right..?

ā€œI wish I was.ā€ She looked completely serious. ā€œThe records don’t explain every detail.ā€ ā€œThey only say rebirth is possible.ā€

ā€œAnd if Victor truly has been rebornā€¦ā€

Her eyes shifted back to the car where Jayden slept peacefully for the first time all day.

ā€œā€¦then we’re searching for someone who doesn’t even know he used to exist.ā€

A cold shiver ran down my spine and a sudden urgency hit me. I pulled my phone from my pocket so quickly I nearly dropped it.

ā€œIf that’s even a possibilityā€¦ā€ I muttered while scrolling through my contacts. ā€œI’m not wasting another second.ā€

Jane watched me without saying a word. The call connected almost immediately.

ā€œYour Majesty.ā€

ā€œGather every captain in every kingdom,ā€ I ordered. ā€œI want every maternity ward, every healer’s house, every orphanage and every village birth record from the last four months checked.ā€

There was a brief silence on the other end.

ā€œā€¦Your Majesty?ā€

ā€œYou heard me.ā€

ā€œWe’re looking for a newborn.ā€

The captain sounded thoroughly confused.

ā€œA newborn… sir?ā€

ā€œYes.ā€

I pinched the bridge of my nose.

ā€œAnd before you ask another question, no, I haven’t lost my mind.ā€

Jane snorted beside me.

ā€œI heard that,ā€ I muttered.

ā€œSearch every child born within the last four months. If anything unusual happened during the birth, if strange magic was reported, if a child was abandoned, if anything seems out of place, I want a report on my desk before sunrise.ā€

ā€œAt once, Your Majesty.ā€

The call ended and I stared at my phone for a long second. ā€œThis feels insane.ā€

ā€œIt is insane,ā€ Jane agreed.

ā€œBut we’ve exhausted every logical explanation.ā€

Before I could answer, the rear car door opened. Both of us turned so quickly it almost gave me whiplash.

Jayden stepped out slowly, one hand resting against the door for support. His face had regained some color, but he still looked exhausted and his eyes moved between Jane and me before narrowing suspiciously.

ā€œā€¦What babies?ā€

I blinked.

ā€œWhat?ā€

ā€œI heard you talking.ā€

His voice was still hoarse from earlier.

ā€œWhat babies?ā€

I hurried toward him.

ā€œBaby, you should be resting. Are you still in pain?ā€

He frowned, completely ignoring my question.

ā€œWhat babies, Sammy?ā€

I looked helplessly at Jane. She looked back at me with the exact same expression. Neither of us had expected him to wake up at that exact moment. Jayden crossed his arms despite how tired he looked.

ā€œI asked a question.ā€

Jane finally cleared her throat.

ā€œā€¦Baby Victor.ā€

The words hung in the air.

Jayden stared at her.

ā€œā€¦What?ā€

Jane repeated herself, though she sounded far less confident this time.

ā€œā€¦Baby Victor.ā€

Jayden looked from her to me.

Then back to her again.

ā€œā€¦What exactly is a Baby Victor?ā€

I rubbed a hand over my face.

ā€œThis is going to sound absolutely ridiculous.ā€

ā€œIt already does.ā€

Jane took a careful step forward.

ā€œThe old records mention rebirth.ā€

Jayden didn’t interrupt.

ā€œThey suggest that when certain ancient creatures die, their souls don’t disappear forever.ā€

He still said nothing.

ā€œThey’re… reborn.ā€

Jayden slowly nodded.

ā€œSo far, I’m following.ā€

Jane took a deep breath. ā€œWe think Victor may have been reborn.ā€

Another slow nod.

ā€œAs a baby.ā€

Complete silence took over around us. Jayden simply stared at both of us. One second… Two seconds…Three.. the blinked.

ā€œā€¦You thinkā€¦ā€ He pointed at himself. ā€œā€¦my six-foot-four dragon princeā€¦ā€

He pointed toward me. ā€œā€¦is currently wearing diapers?ā€

I bit the inside of my cheek. When he said it out loud, it sounded even

šŸ–±ļø Jayden šŸ–±ļø My whole body felt like it was on fire. It wasn’t the kind of fire that licked at skin from the outside. This was worse. This crawled through my veins like something alive, something clawing its way from the inside out, until every drop of blood in my body felt like it had been replaced with molten lava. My breathing came in short, uneven gasps. I gripped the edge of the car seat so hard my knuckles went white, the cushion biting into my palms as another wave of pain crashed through me and nearly took my knees out from under me. Blood. Tiny crimson droplets welled up along my collarbone before sliding down my neck, my arms, dripping in slow, deliberate lines onto my cloths beneath me. I watched them fall almost distantly, the way you watch rain from behind glass. Like it was happening to someone else and my body had decided to betray me and forgotten to send the memo. It had been happening for months now. Ever since the mate mark Victor left on my neck, the one

šŸ–±ļøVictor šŸ–±ļøI died…The thought echoed over and over inside my head as I remained on the cold bathroom floor, my entire body shaking violently.Fire…. Blood… A palace… Golden eyes.ā€œā€¦I love you, Jā€¦ā€The memories kept coming in broken pieces, each one crashing into the next before I could make sense of them. Every time I thought they had stopped, another one slammed into me, making my skull feel like it was splitting apart.I gripped my hair.ā€œWhat the hellā€¦ā€My breathing refused to slow.I wasn’t crazy, dreaming neither was I imagining any of it. I had lived another life. No…I had been another man. A vampire king half dragon. Then I had died.ā€œSo why am I here?ā€The stranger in the mirror stared back at me. The same face I’d spent ten years trying to accept and never once felt like mine. Now I finally understood why. Because it wasn’t.…I had no idea how long I remained inside that bathroom before I finally forced myself back onto my feet.My legs still felt weak. Every sound arou

šŸ–±ļø Victor šŸ–±ļøBrimmm~~ brimmm~~ brimmm~~The irritating sound of my phone refused to stop, drilling straight into my skull like it had made it its life’s mission to ruin the only decent sleep I’d managed all week. I buried my face deeper into the pillow and reached blindly across the bedside table, silently wishing I could launch the stupid thing across the room.Unfortunately, I had enough self-control not to.That phone had cost me six whole months of overtime, skipped meals, and listening to my manager complain about productivity. I wasn’t about to smash the most expensive thing I owned just because the universe apparently hated me.Seriously.Could a man not sleep in peace for one single morning?Apparently not.I answered the call without even checking who it was.ā€œWhat?ā€ā€œDo you know what time it is, Victor?ā€I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at it for a second. And it was obviously Jasmine, my biggest nightmare. She was the only person in the entire Fairy Realm wh
