Chapter 2

Penulis: Wulan
Alice was not concerned and brushed them off, “He’s not going to run off. Even if I kicked him out, he'd kneel on the ground crying and begging me not to leave him.

“Besides, he needs me to keep that sick father of his alive.”

I staggered backward until I felt the presence of someone standing behind me.

“Brother, you're back.”

When I turned around and noticed it was Gregory, the look in my eyes darkened as I glared at him. "I don’t have a brother."

When I walked toward the side door, Gregory suddenly cried out.

“Ah!”

The conversation in the living room was cut off immediately.

Alice was the first to approach with her hands in her pockets. When she saw Gregory lying on the floor, she shot me a long, considered look. “Did you push him?”

Gregory quickly explained, “No, it wasn't him who pushed me, I was just careless and fell.”

Then, he started to sob. “Alice, my stomach hurts…”

Alice clicked her tongue as she helped him up, then shot me a look and commanded sharply, “Come.”

After she helped Gregory back to the villa, she made a point of lifting his clothes to inspect if he was hurt. It was as if his well-being was the most important thing in the world.

Meanwhile, the girls exchanged glances before excusing themselves.

When I walked past them to enter the room, they whistled and gave me looks as if they were expecting drama.

Although Alice had always been promiscuous, her friends had never flaunted their attitude in front of me before.

They were no fools. Even they could tell Alice’s feelings for Gregory were different. He was nothing like the other ninety-nine men she had slept with.

This was why I found myself being treated just like her band of cheap lovers. They teased me without a care in the world.

When I realized this, I felt a faint ache in my heart that had long gone numb.

Alice did not speak. All she did was eye me indifferently before ordering, “Oliver, apologize.”

I bit my lip so hard that I could taste something metallic in my mouth.

“I did not push him.”

Alice sneered cruelly, “Oliver, Gregory is not like the other men. He's my business partner and the heir to Barton Corporation. I am pregnant with his child.

“I will not tolerate anyone hurting my child’s father. Not even you.

“You have to pay for this. That’s the only way you will learn from this.”

I tried to make a run, but Alice grabbed me.

She pressed my head against the table.

Alice snarled in my ear, “Listen up, Oliver. If you ever try to hurt Gregory again, it’ll be your dad on the guillotine.”

Tears welled up in my eyes before streaming down my cheeks. I suddenly recalled scenes of her protecting me from the other men she had slept with in the past.

Then, she handed me the divorce papers.

“Sign it. I can’t have my child being born a bastard.”

Our marriage had completely lost its significance.

I took the agreement, then decisively signed my name on it.

Upon noting my lack of hesitation, Alice frowned slightly and scoffed. “Since you are no longer my husband, have the decency to move to the maids’ room. Also, you can take care of your father’s medical expenses yourself from now on.”

I forced a smile. Upon remembering my father’s last words, I remarked faintly, “It’s fine.”

That was when the sound of someone throwing up interrupted us.

My heart dropped. I rushed into the room only to find the bedsheets my father had bought for me covered in vomit.

Gregory staggered to his feet while turning to me apologetically, "Sorry about that. I had a little too much to drink at the reception with Alice tonight and couldn’t hold back."

Then, he produced ten dollars from his wallet. “The bedsheet looks pretty old, this should be more than enough.”

“No, I don’t want to! Alice, save me! I’m the father of your child!”Alice acted as if she could not hear him and came to me instead to apologize.“Oliver, I’m sorry. Gregory and I were never serious, I never really meant to divorce you. I came to save you that night, but you were already gone by then.“Oliver, I feel like I’ve been losing my mind these days. I’ve missed you so much.”The dark circles under her eyes seemed real enough. However, our romance had ended the moment my father leapt to his death. There was no coming back from that.I no longer depended on her, nor did I have any affection left for her.My grandfather scoffed. “So you were the one who dumped my son's ashes down the drain and strapped a dog collar on my grandson.”Alice’s gaze wandered from me for a moment, then she suddenly realized what he was talking about and cried out, “It’s not true!“It was all an act! Oliver is the only one I love, I would never hurt him!“I’ve already made preparations for our

The women who had been lusting after me were now trembling like leaves, hiding behind the crowd.Charlotte went toward them and produced a knife out of nowhere. She moved as swiftly as lightning. In an instant, they fell to the ground and cried out in anguish, shielding their faces.Charlotte returned to me and casually sheathed her knife and instructed her subordinates, “Send them to the brothels.”That was when another group of people got on their knees and pleaded, “Mr. Beckett, please spare them! They are our family's only heirs!”“Please, don’t do this to them!”My grandfather chuckled heartily at their misery. He motioned for me to sit with him and enjoy the spectacle. Then, he remarked condescendingly while gesturing at Charlotte, “This subordinate of mine has a strange nature and never listens to me. Maybe you all should try pleading with her instead.”With that, they groveled before Charlotte. She responded by suddenly seizing a young woman's hand and slicing off her f

“Just make sure you take Charlotte with you everywhere you go.”I hesitated for a moment before blurting out, “Maybe not when I go to the bathroom.”Charlotte was still standing in the corner with an expressionless look upon her face. When I said that, all she did was throw a glance at me before assuming her same stoic stature.I immediately blushed. After all, I was only sixteen when I met her.She had seen me at my lowest point. For some reason, being in her presence always had a way of making me feel awkward. My grandfather looked at me, then at Charlotte standing in the corner, before bursting into laughter.Charlotte glanced at her watch and motioned. “It’s time.”Almost all the guests from Gregory’s birthday party were present.Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would see all these people again. The moment I appeared behind my grandfather, everyone held their breath.“This is my grandson, Oliver. From now on, I expect all of you to show some honor for my f

Alice grimaced. “Grandpa, what are you doing here?”Carl jabbed his walking cane forcefully on the floor. “I heard you were knocked up by that Barton kid? And where is Oliver?"…I was lying in the hospital and haunted by nightmares. The moment I awoke from another one of these nightmares, I was greeted by an elderly man with gray hair by my bedside. He was quietly wiping away his tears. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught another stoic-looking man standing in the corner.Upon noticing that I was awake, the old man excitedly grabbed my hand, “Oliver, you’re finally awake! It’s me, your grandfather!”I furrowed my brows so I could get a closer look at the middle-aged man behind him.“Mr. Clarke, I was the one who contacted you to help you find your father’s ancestry. Do you remember me?“This gentleman here is the one you’ve been looking for. He’s your grandfather.”The mention of my father made me burst out in tears again. I looked at the old man with my vision blurre

The furious Gregory shouted at the onlookers, “What are you looking at? If you don’t mind your business, I’ll tell my mother!”Everyone had only been courteous to him out of respect for Alice.Otherwise, nobody would bother showing an ounce of respect to a bastard child born to a homewrecker.Besides, they had enough of Gregory's arrogance coupled with Alice's haughty attitude. With that, they ganged up on him.Meanwhile, Alice, who had arrived at the hospital, had trouble finding Oliver’s father’s ward.…She sat in the hospital's lobby with a grim look upon her face. The hospital director showed up to attend to her and poured her tea.“Mrs. Foster, it has been a while since you last graced us with a visit. What brings you here in the middle of the night…?”Alice slammed down her glass. “Who gave you permission to change my father-in-law’s ward?!”They were all stunned by the accusation. The hospital director frowned and asked in a puzzled tone, “What are you talking about?

Alice’s eyes reddened when she picked up the blood-stained ring from the severed hand. She murmured to no one in particular, “This is the engagement ring I exchanged with Oliver. He never takes it off.”She was too afraid to even entertain the thought that this might be Oliver’s severed hand.“You, get over here!”Her eyes were swollen and red as she snapped at the bodyguard, “Where is the mister?”Gregory finally caught up to her. He affectionately took her hand and asked, “Alice, were you looking for me? Why were you ignoring me just now?”Alice impatiently shrugged him off before repeating the same question, “Where is the mister?”The bodyguards all lowered their heads and were too afraid to speak.Gregory tried to smooth things over, “Alice, why are you being so upset? I'm right here!“I just took my friends out to get something to eat and some drinks. You were the one who told me I could do whatever I wanted on my birthday!”Smack! She slapped Gregory across the face and
