Chapter 3

Penulis: Wulan
My eyes were bloodshot when I slapped him across the face.

“Gregory, you crossed a line!”

Gregory covered his face and seemed aghast. Then, he turned to Alice, who was behind him and cried out, looking aggrieved, “Alice, I didn't mean it! I tried to apologize to him!”

What came after was a terrific, burning sensation across my face.

Alice had put everything into the slap and threw me to the ground. She barely even cared to look at me.

Instead, she went straight to Gregory, where she carefully looked after him. “There, do you feel better?”

Gregory embraced her. “It's my fault. I shouldn’t have thrown up on those sheets and ruined them.”

It was then that Alice cast a look at the grotesque stain on the sheet before ordering icily, “Burn it.”

“No, it was the last thing my father left for me! I can clean it myself, don't burn it!”

Alice of all people should know that I suffered from nightmares every night. The only way I could fall asleep was when I was hugging the blanket.

Despite that, she ignored my pleas and ordered the maid behind her. “Throw away all this old and nasty stuff when the new mister moves in.”

Bang!

The wedding picture on the wall was knocked to the floor and swept up like common trash.

I could hear echoes of the vows she gave when the wedding pictures were taken.

Back then, she had sworn in front of everyone, “Alice Foster will only love Oliver Clarke for the rest of her life.”

When the bedsheet erupted in flames, I leapt toward the brazier to salvage it with my bare hands. I risked burning myself to put out the flames.

Soon, my hands were covered with burns and blisters. To my surprise, it was Alice who rushed to my side and grabbed my hand.

She turned to me with a sharp look in her eyes. “Does it hurt?”

Then, Gregory suddenly clutched his hand over his stomach before gesturing at the urn containing my father’s ashes. “Why did you bring home something like that, brother? You know I’m allergic to dust!

“Ahck! Ahck! Alice, help!”

I lunged forward. “No!”

It was too late for Gregory, who had kicked over my father's ashes.

I could not hold back my rage anymore and threw myself at him. I seized him by the hair, my eyes bloodshot with rage, and accused him, “You did it on purpose!

“You scum! As if your father seducing my mother wasn’t enough, now you want to be a home wrecker and steal my wife from me too!”

Gregory cried out, “Alice, my brother has lost it! He's going to kill me!”

I had my hand wrapped tightly around his neck until Alice’s bodyguards sent me flying with a kick.

When I tumbled to the floor, shards of broken porcelain pierced my flesh and drew blood.

I crawled around desperately to collect whatever was left of my father’s ashes while smearing the floor with streaks of my blood.

My tears dripped onto the ashes and formed clumps.

“Dad, I'm sorry. Please forgive me…”

Then, Alice snatched the urn from my arms.

She mercilessly tossed all the remaining ashes of my father into the toilet!

“Splash!”

The sound of the toilet flushing horrified me.

I knelt before the toilet, completely stunned. When I looked up at Alice, my eyes were red and swollen. “Alice! I will never ever forgive you!”

I recognized what seemed to be shock and hurt flickering across her eyes for a brief moment.

Gregory was clutching onto the hair I had ripped out of his scalp and cried out, “Alice, look at how much of my hair he pulled out. Maybe we shouldn't keep the baby after all. If he’s willing to do something like this now, what is he going to do when the child is born? He’s going to kill us!”

Alice hugged him tenderly and assured him, “He won’t. I will protect you.”

Then, she regarded me with a look so cutting it seemed as if I were worthless to her. Then, she turned to her housemaids. “Get the scissors.”

After she was handed a pair of scissors, she stood before me and seized me by my chin. “Oliver, I must have spoiled you too much.”

With that, she pulled a bundle of my hair and cut it at its roots. It looked as if she was doing yardwork on my scalp.

I recalled how she was caressing my hair just the day before the wedding and was fawning over it. “I love your hair. It smells so good.”

It was only when a few strands of hair remained on my scalp that she stopped and tossed aside the scissors.

She turned and hugged Gregory while kissing his hair as if it was a form of worship. “There, do you feel better?”

“No, I don’t want to! Alice, save me! I’m the father of your child!”Alice acted as if she could not hear him and came to me instead to apologize.“Oliver, I’m sorry. Gregory and I were never serious, I never really meant to divorce you. I came to save you that night, but you were already gone by then.“Oliver, I feel like I’ve been losing my mind these days. I’ve missed you so much.”The dark circles under her eyes seemed real enough. However, our romance had ended the moment my father leapt to his death. There was no coming back from that.I no longer depended on her, nor did I have any affection left for her.My grandfather scoffed. “So you were the one who dumped my son's ashes down the drain and strapped a dog collar on my grandson.”Alice’s gaze wandered from me for a moment, then she suddenly realized what he was talking about and cried out, “It’s not true!“It was all an act! Oliver is the only one I love, I would never hurt him!“I’ve already made preparations for our

The women who had been lusting after me were now trembling like leaves, hiding behind the crowd.Charlotte went toward them and produced a knife out of nowhere. She moved as swiftly as lightning. In an instant, they fell to the ground and cried out in anguish, shielding their faces.Charlotte returned to me and casually sheathed her knife and instructed her subordinates, “Send them to the brothels.”That was when another group of people got on their knees and pleaded, “Mr. Beckett, please spare them! They are our family's only heirs!”“Please, don’t do this to them!”My grandfather chuckled heartily at their misery. He motioned for me to sit with him and enjoy the spectacle. Then, he remarked condescendingly while gesturing at Charlotte, “This subordinate of mine has a strange nature and never listens to me. Maybe you all should try pleading with her instead.”With that, they groveled before Charlotte. She responded by suddenly seizing a young woman's hand and slicing off her f

“Just make sure you take Charlotte with you everywhere you go.”I hesitated for a moment before blurting out, “Maybe not when I go to the bathroom.”Charlotte was still standing in the corner with an expressionless look upon her face. When I said that, all she did was throw a glance at me before assuming her same stoic stature.I immediately blushed. After all, I was only sixteen when I met her.She had seen me at my lowest point. For some reason, being in her presence always had a way of making me feel awkward. My grandfather looked at me, then at Charlotte standing in the corner, before bursting into laughter.Charlotte glanced at her watch and motioned. “It’s time.”Almost all the guests from Gregory’s birthday party were present.Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would see all these people again. The moment I appeared behind my grandfather, everyone held their breath.“This is my grandson, Oliver. From now on, I expect all of you to show some honor for my f

Alice grimaced. “Grandpa, what are you doing here?”Carl jabbed his walking cane forcefully on the floor. “I heard you were knocked up by that Barton kid? And where is Oliver?"…I was lying in the hospital and haunted by nightmares. The moment I awoke from another one of these nightmares, I was greeted by an elderly man with gray hair by my bedside. He was quietly wiping away his tears. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught another stoic-looking man standing in the corner.Upon noticing that I was awake, the old man excitedly grabbed my hand, “Oliver, you’re finally awake! It’s me, your grandfather!”I furrowed my brows so I could get a closer look at the middle-aged man behind him.“Mr. Clarke, I was the one who contacted you to help you find your father’s ancestry. Do you remember me?“This gentleman here is the one you’ve been looking for. He’s your grandfather.”The mention of my father made me burst out in tears again. I looked at the old man with my vision blurre

The furious Gregory shouted at the onlookers, “What are you looking at? If you don’t mind your business, I’ll tell my mother!”Everyone had only been courteous to him out of respect for Alice.Otherwise, nobody would bother showing an ounce of respect to a bastard child born to a homewrecker.Besides, they had enough of Gregory's arrogance coupled with Alice's haughty attitude. With that, they ganged up on him.Meanwhile, Alice, who had arrived at the hospital, had trouble finding Oliver’s father’s ward.…She sat in the hospital's lobby with a grim look upon her face. The hospital director showed up to attend to her and poured her tea.“Mrs. Foster, it has been a while since you last graced us with a visit. What brings you here in the middle of the night…?”Alice slammed down her glass. “Who gave you permission to change my father-in-law’s ward?!”They were all stunned by the accusation. The hospital director frowned and asked in a puzzled tone, “What are you talking about?

Alice’s eyes reddened when she picked up the blood-stained ring from the severed hand. She murmured to no one in particular, “This is the engagement ring I exchanged with Oliver. He never takes it off.”She was too afraid to even entertain the thought that this might be Oliver’s severed hand.“You, get over here!”Her eyes were swollen and red as she snapped at the bodyguard, “Where is the mister?”Gregory finally caught up to her. He affectionately took her hand and asked, “Alice, were you looking for me? Why were you ignoring me just now?”Alice impatiently shrugged him off before repeating the same question, “Where is the mister?”The bodyguards all lowered their heads and were too afraid to speak.Gregory tried to smooth things over, “Alice, why are you being so upset? I'm right here!“I just took my friends out to get something to eat and some drinks. You were the one who told me I could do whatever I wanted on my birthday!”Smack! She slapped Gregory across the face and
