The immaculate chandeliers hung from the ceiling, creating a golden glow together with other light fixtures. Soft jazz music played in the background, slightly swallowed by people’s chatter.
I was wearing a long, white silk slip dress and a draped scarf around my neck. I matched the dress with white stilettoes and soft makeup. I hated white. I wouldn’t wear it unless I had to, and my brother all but demanded I wear it.
I was at yet another boring charity gala. We were saving indigenous animals this time. I wasn’t even sure the money we spent at events like those even went to the poor animals. I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t.
The rich crowd had more scammers than the people who actually needed the money. They skimmed large amounts of money, and they weren’t punished for it.
I socialized with a few people before I decided to take a break. I stepped outside to get some fresh air and maybe have a cigarette. The air was chilly outside, and it calmed me. The banquet hall was suffocating with fake people and conversations.
I could have sworn my cheeks were hurting from all the smiling I had done. I would rather have been anywhere else. I took out my pack of cigarettes, pulled one out, and grabbed a lighter.
Then I remembered what my brother had told me.
“No smoking,” he’d said, right before I left. And yet, I had carried a whole pack.
I groaned and put everything back in my purse. I could hold out for a few hours. I sighed and took a short walk, following the path of tall, dense cypress trees, illuminated by ground-level lights.
It looked magical, and it provided more peace than anything that was waiting for me inside. I was dreading having to go back in, but I knew I had to.
I must not have been watching my path because my heel snapped on the stone path, and I twisted my ankle. I lost my balance and fell backwards, closing my eyes to brace for the fall. I waited for it to come, but it never did.
All I felt was warm hands around my waist and my back against a muscular body. The warm scent of sandalwood and smoked cedar suddenly filled the air. I opened my eyes to look at my savior.
He had an intense, almost predatory gaze, dark brows, sharp cheekbones, and a buzzed head. He was in an all-black suit with the first few buttons of his black shirt undone.
A tattoo of a black snake peeking from just above his collarbone to behind his ear caught my eye. The snake’s head was on his throat, fangs bared, when he tilted his head back. It made him look even more intimidating.
His blue eyes were cold and icy as he lifted me to my feet.
“Thank you—” I tried to say, but he cut me off rudely.
“I have seen this trick before. How many girls do you think have used this cliché accident to try and get my attention? You’re not the first, and you certainly won’t be the last. Next time, I’ll watch you fall.”
I opened my mouth to tell him that he had been wrong, but he had already walked away. I fought the urge to throw my purse at him. That wouldn’t be classy.
I took out my phone and called my boyfriend.
“Miles, I twisted my ankle. I’m sending you my location. Please come and pick me up.”
Five minutes later, he was there. He carried me back to the banquet hall and sat me on one of the chairs there. He massaged my ankle and pulled out flat shoes for me.
“You shouldn’t walk in heels again tonight,” he said as he kissed my cheek. I blushed as he helped me to my feet. “Where did you run off to?”
“I went outside. I wanted to have a smoke.”
“You know what Jesse said. Tonight can’t go wrong.”
Instinctively, my eyes went across the room, and I made eye contact with Seth Ashford. He was still looking at me, his blue eyes still as icy and cold as they were before.
“Oh, I think it already went well,” I said to Miles while my eyes remained on Seth. We were engaging in a staring contest that was so intense that it was like a competition; the one who broke it first was the loser.
“I see,” Miles said, as he followed my gaze to Seth. “Good work. Jesse will be proud.”
“I didn’t even have to do much,” I said as I looked away from Seth and focused on Miles.
“No one can resist you, Ivy,” he said.
We changed the subject of our conversation and interacted with people until the night was almost over.
I grabbed a glass of champagne at the same time as someone else. His huge calloused hands grazed against mine, sending shockwaves throughout my body. I gasped a little and looked at Seth.
He had this thing about me that seemed to pull me in a way I didn’t like. I liked being in control, and where Seth was involved, there was no control.
“We have to stop meeting like this,” I said with a polite smile.
“We shouldn’t meet at all. I don’t like the sight of gold-diggers trying to get a big payout from seducing a billionaire. First, you fake a fall, and now you try to grab the same drink as me. Your tricks are dated.”
He was arrogant and cocky, and I would have given anything to knee him in the nuts. But I had to behave.
“Being a gold-digger would have to require someone to be desperate for money, and I’m not. Get off your high horse and touch some grass, you cocky bastard.”
I shouldn’t have called him a bastard because he liked soft women who didn’t curse and wore white. I regretted it until I saw the slight smirk he had on his face. He was enjoying my attitude.
“I know your kind. If it’s not money you want, it’s power. Stay in your place…” His voice trailed away like he was expecting me to tell him my name, but I wouldn’t. That would be too easy for him.
“I am in my place, and you don’t have anything I would want.”
I walked away and grabbed Miles, telling him we needed to leave. He stopped what he was doing and carried me out of the event, claiming I had already walked enough on my twisted ankle.
I knew Seth was watching me even without looking at him. I could already feel his eyes on me. I had piqued his interest.
I agreed to meet Elizabeth at a nearby restaurant. I had to cancel some of the meetings I had so that I could meet with her and find out the truth, but I didn’t want to believe that my brother could have lied to me in any way.He knew her better than Seth, even though he didn’t know that. You reveal so much of yourself when you are sleeping with someone instead of being friends with them.Choosing to show someone your body and be intimate with them makes you develop a certain level of trust that you didn’t have with other people who hadn’t seen you in your most intimate and vulnerable ways. When she finally arrived, she looked like she had aged decades, just from the Asher drama. It had been dragging on for a little over a month, and it was getting really bad.But luckily for her, she had some people on the Internet, defending her because of the tactic I had told her to use. People were debating whether she was a victim of domestic abuse, and whether they should feel sorry for her, or
It was over for Asher. Shit was going very badly. He had been prosecuted and was in prison awaiting trial. I heard his bail hearing was going to be in a few days but neither he nor his wife had the kind of money that would allow him to walk Scott free. They had lost everything after the allegations against him got serious. Not only was he being accused of fraud and embezzlement, but he was also being accused of sexual crimes. Most of the victims who had come forward had also named Nikolai and Michael in their lawsuits.I wondered how Beckett got away with it, but he seemed to be the safe one out of all of them. Even Seth wasn’t even in the conversation and it came to Asher and the things that he had done.I was kind of shocked and it made me wonder if my brother had lied to me yet again about Seth or I had to blindly trust him like I had all these years.Things in my life were going well and Seth and I were growing strong. I had hung out with his grandmother and grandfather a couple o
As soon as I left the coffee shop, Seth asked me to go to an address. I already knew it was Nikolai’s penthouse, and I wondered why he would call me there. He knew how much I resented the man.I pretended to tolerate Michael, Beckett, and even Asher. But when it came to Nikolai, I felt disgusted just by looking at him.I texted Jesse where I was and asked him to come looking for me if I didn’t contact him within the next few hours. I didn’t trust any of the men. And while I felt safe with Seth, he was still a bad person.I couldn’t forget that. He was also friends with Nikolai. When I got to the penthouse, all the men were there—Beckett, Nikolai, Michael, and Seth. Asher was missing. They all looked like they were in mourning. Every single one of them was under a microscope because of Asher’s controversy. All of them except Seth, because he tried as much as possible not to be seen out in public with the others.“Why am I here?” I asked, looking directly at Seth.“We wanted your opinio
“Billionaire Asher Quinn loses everything…”“This just in, Asher Quinn’s best friend, Michael Montgomery, is burying articles exposing Asher Quinn to fraud and money laundering.”“Reports say bigshot lawyer, Nikolai West, will be representing Asher Quinn in his fraud case. Does this imply where his morals stand? All this comes after Mr. Quinn was accused of sleeping with a nineteen-year-old girl.”All these were the reports on all the news stations. It was all people were talking about. I was the one who leaked that Michael was burying records. I wanted his reputation and that of Nikolai to suffer a little.People were already boycotting their companies.“You called me?” Josh asked as he walked into my office.I was in Mark’s office with a nice view of the city. It was the size of a suite, it had a fireplace, a TV, a leather couch, and a very huge mahogany desk. Since I was the boss, I could summon employees.“Asher told me you’re not picking up his calls,” I said, as I leaned against
“You held it down in front of my family. Everyone loves you—the ones who matter at least. Nona wouldn’t stop talking about you. You really know how to charm people.”I smiled. I had planned this for years. Of course, I knew exactly what to do to charm his grandparents. It was the easiest way to get him to ask me to marry him. The inheritance clause was a bonus.“I am so glad they liked me. I was so nervous. I had to pull so many strings to get those gifts for them. It was the only way I knew how to break the ice.” I said. “Thank you for telling me the things they wanted the most.”“Nona and grandpa normally don’t like material gifts, but you managed to make the gifts sentimental.”He was happy, and so was I. We were debating in whose house we would spend the night when Seth’s phone started ringing. When he saw that it was Asher calling, he turned it off.But it just kept ringing.“I think you should pick up the call,” I said. “It could be an emergency.”He picked up his phone and angr
Seth and I headed to his grandparents’ house. He had slept at my house the previous day, which made it easier for us to take his car to go for dinner. He mentioned it was a big deal and many relatives were going to be there, so I had to dress glamorously as everyone would. They treated dinners like a black and tie event.I wore a short, soft pink satin dress, silver stilettos, and I put my hair in a high bun and wore light strawberry makeup. I put on diamond stud earrings, wore a tennis bracelet, and necklace, and carried a pink Kelly Hermes bag.I wanted to fit in with his family. When Seth and I arrived, there were a lot of cars parked up front. The dinner was in a Victorian mansion that looked more like a castle than a house. It had like fifteen bedrooms and four bathrooms. The property had a ranch, a small lake, and a forest. It was huge, and there weren’t neighbors nearby, and there were bodyguards everywhere. I guess many people wanted to harm the Ashford matriarch and patriarch
Seth was touching me all over, and I would be lying if I said that I hated it. He kissed down my neck, making me moan and writhe in his arms.I was no better. My hands were under his shirt, touching his strong muscles. He grabbed my ass and pulled me into him, so my legs were wrapped around his wai
I beat Seth twice, and he only beat me once. It wasn’t because I was such a good player. It was only because I was a good strategist and I had a high IQ—higher than Seth’s, which was saying much considering he was a tech genius.“Wow, you’re good,” Seth praised.“I haven’t played since high school.
“This is the only way back to New York. I wasn’t stalking you, Ivy. I saw you stranded and I thought I might help you. What happened?”I contemplated sending him away, but then I realized the tow company wasn’t there yet, and they would make me wait for a long time. I needed him even though I wante
Seth bought me another penthouse and delivered all the new clothes I had left at his place. I couldn’t believe he would do something like that when I hadn’t even slept with him. He was treating me like a queen.I wasn’t used to that kind of treatment from men, especially when they didn’t know wheth
