The next phase

last update publish date: 2026-05-28 17:18:55

I couldn’t remember the last time I cried. I had grown strong over the years, and very little could hurt me. I had already been hurt enough throughout the years, and there was nothing I hadn’t seen.

But I was going to have to summon some waterworks for the next phase of my plan. I couldn’t deny that seeing Nikolai had thrown me off my game. But I wouldn’t allow seeing him again to mess me up.

I couldn’t lose my cool and my composure when I had come so far.

It was true that Seth couldn’t take his eyes off of me, so I made sure to look as distressed as I could. I made a face every single time I looked at my phone and then smiled at every guest who came to speak to me.

I had already made a name for myself in the inner circle of rich people. Everyone who was beloved by the public knew my name, and every person who had a bad reputation wanted me to represent them.

But I was already as busy as one could get, and I wasn’t ready to take on a new clientele. The only reason I took on Seth was because I was ready to punish him and his powerful friends for what they had done to my family.

“You should come to my birthday party next week, Ivy,” an elderly lady said as she hugged me.

“Oh, I would love to, Mrs. Voss, but I’m afraid I am too busy for that. I’ll have my assistant send you a gift that I will personally pick out.” I replied.

She understood I was married to my job, and she was happy that I was just picking out a gift. She was a rich billionaire with lots of wealth and no children. Her entire family was after her wealth, and I had helped her multiple times to prevent them from taking her for all she was worth.

She wanted to donate all of it to charity as she had written in her will. She would rather have that than have all her wealth in the hands of her vampire family members. I also had gotten her a candidate to take over her company so she wouldn’t lose her legacy.

“I do hope you find the time,” she said. “That young man has been looking at you all night. I have to say, he’s much more handsome than that boyfriend of yours.”

I knew she was referring to Seth.

“Mrs. Voss, come on,” I said as I swatted her arm. For a seventy-three-year-old woman, she was very inappropriate.

“You know how much I hate Miles for you. He’s too sweet to handle a strong woman like you. He will soon get tired of you.”

“He won’t. Do I have to get you someone for the night? You’re awfully invested in my sex life.”

She laughed me off and got distracted by another guest. She was right. Miles was starting to get tired of me. He had been by my side since I was little. We had grown up together. When he suggested we start to date, it seemed logical.

I didn’t believe I could fall in love with anyone. My heart had long been frozen. I wouldn’t be able to love Miles, and he knew that. But he was okay with it. I didn’t know how much longer he could tolerate me.

I hoped it was long enough to help me exact my revenge plot. I needed all the help and connections that I could get.

“I didn’t have faith in you. I thought you wanted Seth to yourself, but you didn’t. You have people waiting to work with me and brands blowing up my phone.” Celeste said as she approached me.

I turned to her and smiled.

“I’m professional. Besides, I have a fiancé. I told you, Celeste, I will make people remember your name for life. Not as Mrs. Ashford but as Celeste Armitage first.”

“I like you,” she said as he reached into her purse and removed a red envelope. She handed it to me. “This is for you. You’re invited to my birthday party. I can already tell you and I will be friends.”

She walked away without waiting for my response. I fought the urge to tear the envelope in my hands, but I had to attend. I was getting closer to getting into her and Seth’s inner circle. Just because she and Seth were not in love didn’t mean they didn’t roll in the same crowd.

When she was gone, I made sure to take out my phone again and look sad. I didn’t know if Seth was still looking at me, but I had to remain committed to the cause. It was the only way I would be successful.

I called over May when people started leaving, and there were only a few people left.

“I need you to do something for me,” I told her, and she nodded. There were many people who would take a bullet for me, and she was one of them. I whispered some instructions in her ear so no one else would hear

She didn’t ask any questions. She walked away and got ready to execute my plan. As I was leaving the exhibition, one of the artists in the exhibition, Dean, came to me.

“Your painting sold for ten million dollars. It is the most expensive painting in this Gallery’s history. I should have sold it ages ago.”

“Do I get a commission?” I asked jokingly.

“Maybe if you pose for another one…”

I scoffed and walked past him to go outside. Dean wanted to sleep with me like we did when I was in college. Those days were over, and it wasn’t the proudest moment of my life.

I went outside and called Miles, but he wasn’t picking up. I didn’t bring a jacket and I regretted it a lot. It was difficult to find an Uber at such a high-profile event.

In the corner of my eye, I saw Celeste and Seth arguing before he slammed the door in her face, and the car she was in drove off. I turned away from them completely and called Miles for the millionth time.

“Is there a problem?” Seth asked. He was smoking a cigarette with one hand in his pocket.

“It’s not a problem of yours,” I told him dismissively as I attempted to walk away from him. He grabbed my hand and pulled me back.

He was impossibly close to me, and it made me uncomfortable. Not because he made me uncomfortable, but because of how much my body reacted to his touch.

He leaned in, whispering and blowing smoke in my face, “What if I like taking on problems that aren’t mine?”

  • Deceiving A Billionaire   She didn't know (2)

I agreed to meet Elizabeth at a nearby restaurant. I had to cancel some of the meetings I had so that I could meet with her and find out the truth, but I didn’t want to believe that my brother could have lied to me in any way.He knew her better than Seth, even though he didn’t know that. You reveal so much of yourself when you are sleeping with someone instead of being friends with them.Choosing to show someone your body and be intimate with them makes you develop a certain level of trust that you didn’t have with other people who hadn’t seen you in your most intimate and vulnerable ways. When she finally arrived, she looked like she had aged decades, just from the Asher drama. It had been dragging on for a little over a month, and it was getting really bad.But luckily for her, she had some people on the Internet, defending her because of the tactic I had told her to use. People were debating whether she was a victim of domestic abuse, and whether they should feel sorry for her, or

  • Deceiving A Billionaire   She didn't know (1)

It was over for Asher. Shit was going very badly. He had been prosecuted and was in prison awaiting trial. I heard his bail hearing was going to be in a few days but neither he nor his wife had the kind of money that would allow him to walk Scott free. They had lost everything after the allegations against him got serious. Not only was he being accused of fraud and embezzlement, but he was also being accused of sexual crimes. Most of the victims who had come forward had also named Nikolai and Michael in their lawsuits.I wondered how Beckett got away with it, but he seemed to be the safe one out of all of them. Even Seth wasn’t even in the conversation and it came to Asher and the things that he had done.I was kind of shocked and it made me wonder if my brother had lied to me yet again about Seth or I had to blindly trust him like I had all these years.Things in my life were going well and Seth and I were growing strong. I had hung out with his grandmother and grandfather a couple o

  • Deceiving A Billionaire   Turn on him

As soon as I left the coffee shop, Seth asked me to go to an address. I already knew it was Nikolai’s penthouse, and I wondered why he would call me there. He knew how much I resented the man.I pretended to tolerate Michael, Beckett, and even Asher. But when it came to Nikolai, I felt disgusted just by looking at him.I texted Jesse where I was and asked him to come looking for me if I didn’t contact him within the next few hours. I didn’t trust any of the men. And while I felt safe with Seth, he was still a bad person.I couldn’t forget that. He was also friends with Nikolai. When I got to the penthouse, all the men were there—Beckett, Nikolai, Michael, and Seth. Asher was missing. They all looked like they were in mourning. Every single one of them was under a microscope because of Asher’s controversy. All of them except Seth, because he tried as much as possible not to be seen out in public with the others.“Why am I here?” I asked, looking directly at Seth.“We wanted your opinio

  • Deceiving A Billionaire   Asher loses

“Billionaire Asher Quinn loses everything…”“This just in, Asher Quinn’s best friend, Michael Montgomery, is burying articles exposing Asher Quinn to fraud and money laundering.”“Reports say bigshot lawyer, Nikolai West, will be representing Asher Quinn in his fraud case. Does this imply where his morals stand? All this comes after Mr. Quinn was accused of sleeping with a nineteen-year-old girl.”All these were the reports on all the news stations. It was all people were talking about. I was the one who leaked that Michael was burying records. I wanted his reputation and that of Nikolai to suffer a little.People were already boycotting their companies.“You called me?” Josh asked as he walked into my office.I was in Mark’s office with a nice view of the city. It was the size of a suite, it had a fireplace, a TV, a leather couch, and a very huge mahogany desk. Since I was the boss, I could summon employees.“Asher told me you’re not picking up his calls,” I said, as I leaned against

  • Deceiving A Billionaire   Shit hit the fan

“You held it down in front of my family. Everyone loves you—the ones who matter at least. Nona wouldn’t stop talking about you. You really know how to charm people.”I smiled. I had planned this for years. Of course, I knew exactly what to do to charm his grandparents. It was the easiest way to get him to ask me to marry him. The inheritance clause was a bonus.“I am so glad they liked me. I was so nervous. I had to pull so many strings to get those gifts for them. It was the only way I knew how to break the ice.” I said. “Thank you for telling me the things they wanted the most.”“Nona and grandpa normally don’t like material gifts, but you managed to make the gifts sentimental.”He was happy, and so was I. We were debating in whose house we would spend the night when Seth’s phone started ringing. When he saw that it was Asher calling, he turned it off.But it just kept ringing.“I think you should pick up the call,” I said. “It could be an emergency.”He picked up his phone and angr

  • Deceiving A Billionaire   Dinner with family

Seth and I headed to his grandparents’ house. He had slept at my house the previous day, which made it easier for us to take his car to go for dinner. He mentioned it was a big deal and many relatives were going to be there, so I had to dress glamorously as everyone would. They treated dinners like a black and tie event.I wore a short, soft pink satin dress, silver stilettos, and I put my hair in a high bun and wore light strawberry makeup. I put on diamond stud earrings, wore a tennis bracelet, and necklace, and carried a pink Kelly Hermes bag.I wanted to fit in with his family. When Seth and I arrived, there were a lot of cars parked up front. The dinner was in a Victorian mansion that looked more like a castle than a house. It had like fifteen bedrooms and four bathrooms. The property had a ranch, a small lake, and a forest. It was huge, and there weren’t neighbors nearby, and there were bodyguards everywhere. I guess many people wanted to harm the Ashford matriarch and patriarch

His house was exactly how I expected it to look from the pictures my private investigator had taken for me.He lived in Greenwich, Connecticut. It was typical of him to live there because that was where all the rich people lived. Except, his mansion was beside the ocean. My brother had a mansion th

  • Deceiving A Billionaire   No disobedience

Seth’s driver dropped me off at my building and drove off. I didn’t know how he was planning to go home since he had loaned me his driver. • Deceiving A Billionaire   Don't tell anyone

My lips were swollen and tingling, and my heart was still racing from the intense kiss Seth had stolen from me. I didn’t want to deal with Greta. The only thing I could think about was how I’d just had the best kiss of my life. How could a man kiss you like he was fucking you with his mouth? What e

  • Deceiving A Billionaire   Lost in the music

It kept bugging me that he wouldn’t at least look at me. How could he pretend he didn’t know me? I wasn’t like all the other people he worked with. He and I had shared intimate moments. And I was sure that he had seen me because we had made eye contact. He was the only reason I was in the club. If
