Better the devil you know

“I don’t think this is appropriate,” I said as I tried to pull away, but he had an iron grip on my arm. I was never a nervous person, but when it came to Seth, I became a different version of myself.

“Why? Because your little boyfriend will not like this?” He asked.

I knew he had been staring at me the night we met, and it felt somewhat good to know I had been right. He sounded bitter about the fact that I had a boyfriend.

“Let me go, Mr. Ashford. You’re my client, and you shouldn’t be holding me like this.” I said as I tried to pull away again.

He scoffed and finally let me go. I turned away from him and started making more calls.

“Let me take you home,” he said.

“No, thank you. I’m fine.”

“We both know you’re stranded. And you look cold. Like you said, I am your client and I will not allow you to be left here in the cold.”

I turned and narrowed my eyes at him.

“As far as I know, you don’t like me, and you think I’m a gold digger. Why are you even here? Go home to your fiancé, Mr. Ashford.” I retorted.

He shrugged off his coat and put it around my shoulders.

“Better the devil you know than the angel you don’t know. It doesn’t take much to realize someone stood you up. You’ve been frustrated and angry all night. Let me take you home.”

“Why are you helping me?”

“It’s not about you. In the few hours you have arranged for me to attend an event, you have made people look at me the way they did before my reputation tanked. I am protecting my own interests.”

I didn’t believe him. He saw something in me he liked. I wasn’t sure whether it was because I looked like his first love or it was because I was alluring. Everyone knew he had a girl he loved in high school who died in a bad accident.

Rumors claimed he never got over her, and it was the reason he was cold and closed off. I had brown eyes and brunette hair like she did. It was the reason I wore white even though I hated it.

“Fine,” I agreed, and he led me to his car with his hand on the small of my back. He opened the door for me and ushered me in. I had to say he looked good without his suit jacket. His snake tattoo couldn’t be seen, but I still saw it every time I looked at him.

The car ride was mostly quiet until I broke the ice. I didn’t like tense situations.

“This can never happen again,” I stated.

“What? Taking you home? Is it such a crime?”

“I meant riding in a different car as your fiancé. You should have come together and gone home together.” I stated. “Besides, what makes you think you will ever take me home again?”

“If your boyfriend is unreliable as he is now, I am sure I will be taking you home again,” he said. “As for me and Celeste, focus on how we look in the public eye. Our private issues are complicated.”

I scoffed, and he didn’t address it. There was silence after that. When we arrived at my building complex, I realized I hadn’t given him directions.

“How do you know where I live?” I asked when he stopped in the underground parking lot.

“I like to know everything I can about the people who work for me,” he said.

I had been told he was dangerous. My research on him had turned up interesting things. He was the kind of man who lived in the gray. He did things no person with morals would do to get what he wanted.

I knew he had killed multiple people who crossed him and those who refused to bend to his will. I also knew that he was close friends with a man who was rumored to be part of the Russian mob.

He was as morally gray as they could come. But who was I to judge? I wouldn’t be where I was without bodies in my own backyard.

“I don’t work for you, Seth Ashford. I work with you.” I stated as I opened the passenger door, attempting to step out.

He grabbed my arm for the second time that night.

“Won’t you invite me inside?” He asked, but it didn’t sound like a request.

“You haven’t earned that privilege.”

“Saving you from potential serial killers in the city isn’t something that can earn me the rights to see your place?”

“No.”

“What about buying that painting of yours from the gallery?” He asked, surprising me. “I knew it was you from the moment I saw it. I paid ten million dollars to have it hang over my bed.”

I could tell he was joking, but he wasn’t smiling. It was hard to read him because of that. He could be scared, and he would still have a straight face. Although I wasn’t sure there was much that could scare a man like him.

“Fine. You can come into my house.”

I was slowly realizing that with Seth, the more I pushed him away, the more I pulled him closer to me.

He smirked and said, “Good.”

We walked to the elevator together, and I pressed the button for the penthouse suite.

“How is a young woman like you so successful?” He asked.

“You’ll need more than a drive home and a painting to get me to tell you my life story, Ashford.”

“I already know you dropped out of college before your second year started and dived into the PR industry. You’re brilliant and your IQ makes you a genius.”

“Two sentences are not enough to describe me, and I’m not scared of you if that's what you’re trying to do by showing me you know where I live and telling me what’s on G****e. If I didn’t want you to find me, Seth, you would never have.”

The elevator doors opened, and I input my code to let him into my penthouse. It was dark, so I clapped and the lights came on. I walked to my minibar and poured him a scotch. I knew it was his favorite drink.

Just like he knew some information about me, I knew everything about him—more than he would ever know about me.

“I hear I look like your first love that you lost to a freak accident. Is that why you’re in my penthouse?” I asked and braced myself for the consequences of my question.

I could either get answers or set off a beast. And Seth, let’s just say he was a beast that couldn’t be tamed.

I agreed to meet Elizabeth at a nearby restaurant. I had to cancel some of the meetings I had so that I could meet with her and find out the truth, but I didn’t want to believe that my brother could have lied to me in any way.He knew her better than Seth, even though he didn’t know that. You reveal so much of yourself when you are sleeping with someone instead of being friends with them.Choosing to show someone your body and be intimate with them makes you develop a certain level of trust that you didn’t have with other people who hadn’t seen you in your most intimate and vulnerable ways. When she finally arrived, she looked like she had aged decades, just from the Asher drama. It had been dragging on for a little over a month, and it was getting really bad.But luckily for her, she had some people on the Internet, defending her because of the tactic I had told her to use. People were debating whether she was a victim of domestic abuse, and whether they should feel sorry for her, or

  • Deceiving A Billionaire   She didn't know (1)

It was over for Asher. Shit was going very badly. He had been prosecuted and was in prison awaiting trial. I heard his bail hearing was going to be in a few days but neither he nor his wife had the kind of money that would allow him to walk Scott free. They had lost everything after the allegations against him got serious. Not only was he being accused of fraud and embezzlement, but he was also being accused of sexual crimes. Most of the victims who had come forward had also named Nikolai and Michael in their lawsuits.I wondered how Beckett got away with it, but he seemed to be the safe one out of all of them. Even Seth wasn’t even in the conversation and it came to Asher and the things that he had done.I was kind of shocked and it made me wonder if my brother had lied to me yet again about Seth or I had to blindly trust him like I had all these years.Things in my life were going well and Seth and I were growing strong. I had hung out with his grandmother and grandfather a couple o

  • Deceiving A Billionaire   Turn on him

As soon as I left the coffee shop, Seth asked me to go to an address. I already knew it was Nikolai’s penthouse, and I wondered why he would call me there. He knew how much I resented the man.I pretended to tolerate Michael, Beckett, and even Asher. But when it came to Nikolai, I felt disgusted just by looking at him.I texted Jesse where I was and asked him to come looking for me if I didn’t contact him within the next few hours. I didn’t trust any of the men. And while I felt safe with Seth, he was still a bad person.I couldn’t forget that. He was also friends with Nikolai. When I got to the penthouse, all the men were there—Beckett, Nikolai, Michael, and Seth. Asher was missing. They all looked like they were in mourning. Every single one of them was under a microscope because of Asher’s controversy. All of them except Seth, because he tried as much as possible not to be seen out in public with the others.“Why am I here?” I asked, looking directly at Seth.“We wanted your opinio

  • Deceiving A Billionaire   Asher loses

“Billionaire Asher Quinn loses everything…”“This just in, Asher Quinn’s best friend, Michael Montgomery, is burying articles exposing Asher Quinn to fraud and money laundering.”“Reports say bigshot lawyer, Nikolai West, will be representing Asher Quinn in his fraud case. Does this imply where his morals stand? All this comes after Mr. Quinn was accused of sleeping with a nineteen-year-old girl.”All these were the reports on all the news stations. It was all people were talking about. I was the one who leaked that Michael was burying records. I wanted his reputation and that of Nikolai to suffer a little.People were already boycotting their companies.“You called me?” Josh asked as he walked into my office.I was in Mark’s office with a nice view of the city. It was the size of a suite, it had a fireplace, a TV, a leather couch, and a very huge mahogany desk. Since I was the boss, I could summon employees.“Asher told me you’re not picking up his calls,” I said, as I leaned against

“You held it down in front of my family. Everyone loves you—the ones who matter at least. Nona wouldn’t stop talking about you. You really know how to charm people.”I smiled. I had planned this for years. Of course, I knew exactly what to do to charm his grandparents. It was the easiest way to get him to ask me to marry him. The inheritance clause was a bonus.“I am so glad they liked me. I was so nervous. I had to pull so many strings to get those gifts for them. It was the only way I knew how to break the ice.” I said. “Thank you for telling me the things they wanted the most.”“Nona and grandpa normally don’t like material gifts, but you managed to make the gifts sentimental.”He was happy, and so was I. We were debating in whose house we would spend the night when Seth’s phone started ringing. When he saw that it was Asher calling, he turned it off.But it just kept ringing.“I think you should pick up the call,” I said. “It could be an emergency.”He picked up his phone and angr

  • Deceiving A Billionaire   Dinner with family

Seth and I headed to his grandparents’ house. He had slept at my house the previous day, which made it easier for us to take his car to go for dinner. He mentioned it was a big deal and many relatives were going to be there, so I had to dress glamorously as everyone would. They treated dinners like a black and tie event.I wore a short, soft pink satin dress, silver stilettos, and I put my hair in a high bun and wore light strawberry makeup. I put on diamond stud earrings, wore a tennis bracelet, and necklace, and carried a pink Kelly Hermes bag.I wanted to fit in with his family. When Seth and I arrived, there were a lot of cars parked up front. The dinner was in a Victorian mansion that looked more like a castle than a house. It had like fifteen bedrooms and four bathrooms. The property had a ranch, a small lake, and a forest. It was huge, and there weren’t neighbors nearby, and there were bodyguards everywhere. I guess many people wanted to harm the Ashford matriarch and patriarch

I had a gun in my purse. It was a good thing I hadn’t let go of it until we reached Seth’s room. Otherwise, we would have been in danger. I shot Celeste in the chest. Seth pulled out of me and pulled my panties back in place. He also pulled my dress down and helped me zip the front of my dress. He was a gentleman even after sex. When I was home, I couldn’t stop thinking about the events of that night. Seth was so confused and disoriented that he didn’t speak to me for the rest of the ride.
