Chapter 1

The nurse beside the man held out the surgical consent form. "We need a family member's signature before the surgery. What's your relationship to the patient?"

He took the pen. Even his hands trembled as he signed his name.

"She's my wife," he said.

The words made me feel a pang in my chest. My mind flashed back to a year ago, when Willow Jensen had smiled as she handed me our marriage certificate.

"Zayn, from today onwards, we're officially husband and wife in every way."

As if noticing my momentary daze, the man looked up at me with reddened eyes. Confusion was written all over his face.

I quickly lowered my head and adjusted the mask over the bridge of my nose to hide my expression. Then, I turned and pushed open the operating room doors.

"We'll do everything we can for the patient," I said.

However, the relationship between Willow and me had just come to an end.

After an intensive round of emergency treatment, Willow's condition stabilized. The tense atmosphere in the operating room gradually relaxed.

The colleague beside me lowered his voice and gossiped. "I heard these two ended up like this because they got a little too carried away. The baby's already due, and her husband still didn't know when to stop. Young people these days do put their lives on the line when they're madly in love..."

My hands stilled for a few seconds.

What came to mind was the day Willow had proposed to me. Her eyes sparkled like the brightest star in the night sky, as though she wanted to give me everything good in this world.

"Marry me, Zayn Stuart. For the rest of my life, besides you, I will never touch another man!"

But on our wedding night, she had carefully put every piece of clothing I had taken off back on me. Her expression back then had shown a lot of pain and inner conflict.

"I'm sorry, Zayn. I swore at my mother's grave that I'd mourn for her for three years. This year is the third year. Please wait for me a little longer."

I believed her. My punishment for placing my trust in her was that the child I had just helped deliver was hers.

A mocking smile tugged at the corners of my mouth.

So it wasn't that she wouldn't touch another man because she was honoring her vow. It was simply because she didn't love me.

Before long, the surgery ended successfully.

I held the newborn in my arms. The baby wasn't heavy, yet the weight on my chest was crushing me.

As I pushed open the operating room doors, the man waiting outside immediately sprang to his feet and rushed over. His bloodshot eyes were filled with worry and anxiety.

"How's Willow?"

Looking at the man before me, I recalled the name he had signed on the consent form just moments ago.

Simon Shaw.

It was an unfamiliar name. Willow had never mentioned him to me before.

I placed the baby into his arms and offered my congratulations. "Congratulations. The surgery was very successful. The mother and daughter are both safe."

The tension on Simon's face visibly melted away. When he looked at me, his eyes were filled with the gratitude of a complete stranger.

He was about to say something else when Willow's hospital bed was wheeled out from behind me.

She called out feebly, "Simon..."

She lay on the bed, looking extremely weak.

Simon immediately shoved past me and hurried to her side.

Willow stroked the baby with one hand while holding Simon's hand with the other. Even her voice carried a tenderness I had never once heard from her.

She said, "Simon, our daughter looks so much like you. When she grows up, she'll definitely be as good-looking as you."

"You take the baby home first. I still have something to do," Willow said.No matter how Simon cried out behind her, begging her to stay, she never looked back.On the appointed day, Willow arrived early at the entrance to the courthouse, holding a bouquet of flowers. They were baby's breath, supposedly my favorite. She had gone to the florist first thing that morning to buy the freshest bouquet available. In the past, whenever she fought with me, no matter how fierce the argument was, all she had to do was bring me a bouquet of baby's breath and apologize. No matter how serious the mistake she had made, I always forgave her.She knew I loved her very much. That was why she had become more and more reckless as time went on. She even went behind my back and had a child with Simon. She thought this time wouldn't be any different."Let's go inside," I said as I approached her. When she saw me, she held out the bouquet. "Zayn, I've realized my mistake. I promise I'll cut things off

Simon nodded, but the concern in his eyes had visibly reduced. Still in a daze, he walked to the payment counter. However, the card he handed over was returned to him untouched. The staff said, "I'm sorry, ma'am. It shows there are insufficient funds. Please use a different card."How could that be?The uneasiness in Willow's heart grew stronger and stronger. She motioned for Simon to take every card from her wallet and toss them onto the counter."Try these too," she ordered. Her rude attitude made the staff frown, and her tone became noticeably less friendly. "None of them are working."Willow froze in shock, but she was still unwilling to give up. "Is there something wrong with your hospital's payment system? I used this card just yesterday!"Just then, the phone in her pocket began to vibrate.Willow impatiently held it to her ear and barked, "What is it? Make it quick!"Her employee said in a rush, "It's bad, Ms. Jensen! Our biggest investor has pulled out! All the smalle

The crowd that had been angrily denouncing me fell silent in an instant. After a long pause, someone finally muttered, "What the hell is going on?"Another spoke up. "So… the other man turned out to be the husband?"Simon clenched his fists tightly, his eyes fixed on the photo in the marriage certificate lying on the floor. His whole body trembled. He said with difficulty, "Willow, what's going on? Tell me it's fake. It's fake, right? I'm the one who married you!"Willow lowered her head, not daring to look at him. She remained silent.Simon broke down and began slapping her in a burst of fury. "You lied to me! How could you lie to me?" he cried hoarsely.Willow did nothing but apologize over and over. "I'm sorry."She turned around and held Simon's hands to stop him from hurting himself and her any further."It's all my fault. I've wronged you," she said. The moment those words left her mouth, the crowd gasped in shock. The people who had been the loudest in condemning me

"Oh, Simon. You're always so jealous. I only have eyes for you. How could there be anyone else? Let me see what this Dr. Stuart looks like. I can't believe he has the nerve to set his sights on me," Willow said with a chuckle.Simon pointed straight behind her. Following where he was pointing with his finger, Willow turned around and met my eyes.A loud clatter rang out. Everything in her hands crashed to the floor.Willow's pupils suddenly dilated, and the color drained from her face. "Zayn? What are you doing here?"Simon had thought it was a one-sided obsession on my part. He never expected that Willow really did know who I was. His expression darkened, and the way he looked at me became even more hostile. He asked through gritted teeth, "Willow, you know him?"Willow's face turned pale, and she looked at me with pleading eyes. "N-no, I don't."She wheeled herself over until she was right in front of me.Then, she lowered her voice so that only the two of us could hear. "Zay

Someone suddenly bumped into my shoulder. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw that the person beside me was holding a red banner.Simon abruptly stopped walking. He crossed his arms and looked at me with a smirk. He said, "Dr. Stuart, go ahead and take it."The person who bumped into me handed me the banner. His hand shook, causing it to unfurl. The moment I saw the words on it, my expression soured immensely. The bolded words on the banner read, "Shameless Homewrecker."Those two words were like tight slaps to my face that left my cheeks burning with humiliation. My entire body trembled as I spoke coldly. "What do you mean by this, Mr. Shaw?"At that point, Simon dropped all pretense. His eyes slowly swept over me from head to toe.He sneered, "Willow's not here, so you can stop pretending. I noticed it yesterday outside the operating room. Your eyes were practically glued to her. We're both men. Don't think I can't tell what filthy thoughts you've been hiding."He deliberate

Suppressing the turbulent emotions threatening to spill forth from my eyes, I walked over to the bed and began the routine examination."How are you feeling today?"Holding Willow's hand, Simon answered gently. "Willow's feeling much better now. She was in such a dangerous condition yesterday. It's all thanks to you that she's safe, Dr. Stuart. I haven't even had the chance to thank you properly."As soon as I woke up, I had the factory rush the production of a thank-you banner. I hope you'll accept it when it's ready."I smiled, but my gaze fell on their hands, which remained tightly clasped together. Her finger that had once been bare now sported a uniquely designed ring that matched the one on Simon's finger.Upon noticing where I was looking, Simon turned the ring on his finger. His voice brimming with happiness, he explained, "My wife designed these herself. They're the only pair in the world. They're a little ugly, but I love them."I lowered my eyes at once, hiding the em
