Chapter 1

Fifty coins hit me square in the face.

It wasn't just my skin that stung.

My chest ached worse.

I stared, dumbfounded, at Elmer Chapman—my roommate, the one I'd been bankrolling for three years.

He wasn't the same Elmer who used to shuffle around in washed-out, oversized shirts, timid and apologetic. He stood in the season's newest designer clothes, chin tilted up, looking down at me like something he'd scraped off his shoe.

"Julian Whitmore, don't think I don't know exactly what you've been up to. I was grateful to you once. You gave me a full stomach when I had nothing. But do you have any idea what that meal actually cost me?

"I brought you three meals a day. I cleaned your room. I followed you around like your personal errand boy. You even dragged me to your lectures, no matter how much I hated it.

"Don't feed me that 'I just wanted to help you' garbage. All you did was drop some pocket change and buy yourself a live-in servant.

"And me? I was supposed to be a college student enjoying my best years. Instead you enslaved me, day after day, until I could barely breathe.

"Real charity doesn't expect anything in return. But you just liked feeling superior—you got off on humiliating someone poorer than you!

"You're selfish, you're a hypocrite through and through, and I'm done associating with you.

"Here's your fifty dollars back. Now you get to know what it feels like to be humiliated for once."

The rest of the class turned to gawk at me, whispering among themselves.

"Everyone always said Julian was such a good guy, always helping people out. Who knew he was actually bullying Elmer behind closed doors?

"Fifty bucks bought him a slave for three years? That's a steal. I want a bargain like that too."

Listening to Elmer's tirade, and to the classmates snickering around us, I felt a chill creep down to my fingertips.

He'd only mentioned the fifty dollars.

What he'd conveniently left out was that it wasn't fifty dollars over three years—it was fifty dollars a day, every single day, for the entire three years I'd been supporting him.

On top of that, I'd covered his tuition, his school fees, his clothes, his food—down to the underwear he wore. From his freshman year to right now, I'd paid for every single thing in his life.

Elmer dragged his frail, sickly mother along, and the two of them dropped straight to their knees on the concrete. He grabbed at the hem of my pants, forehead striking the ground with a dull, heavy thud."Please, save me! I know I was wrong. I know it now!"There's no way I can pay this back, not even if I sell everything I own!"My mom's waiting on this money for her surgery. If you push me on this, we're both as good as dead!"His frail mother knelt beside him too, trembling, tears streaming down her face."Young man, Elmer didn't know better. We're the ones in the wrong here. Please, show some mercy. Can you just let this debt go?"Watching the two of them sobbing on their knees, the crowd around us started to soften, a few even murmuring in my direction, urging me to reconsider."Just let it go. It's a person's life on the line here. His mother looks so pitiful."Looking down at Elmer putting on his little performance of pity and pleading, I let out a short, humorless laug

Elmer came completely undone. "No! I won't pay this! There's no way I can cover it!"My family's poor, my mom's sick in the hospital right now! If I take on that kind of debt, she won't have money for treatment!"Please, have mercy on me!"Watching him break down, sobbing without a shred of dignity left, I felt nothing but bitter irony."Elmer. You want me to have mercy? I already showed you mercy once—I paid your tuition, I made sure you never went hungry, I handed you fifty dollars a day out of my own pocket so you wouldn't starve."And what did you call it back then? You said I was humiliating you. That I was some high-and-mighty tyrant crushing your dignity underfoot."So what now? You want me to humiliate you on purpose?"Elmer's sobbing cut off instantly. He bit his lip, his face drained of all color. After a long, heavy pause, he finally forced out a single word through gritted teeth."Yes."I let out a cold laugh, not a trace of pity in my eyes. "Unfortunately, I'm

Preston completely lost it now. He lunged forward and grabbed my wrist, tears springing up instantly."Please! I'm begging you!""You know my situation. My parents are just regular factory workers. We couldn't scrape together that kind of money even if we sold everything we owned! Just let it go, please. I really do know I messed up."Watching him dissolve into tears, I felt absolutely nothing. "Where was all this regret when you were smashing my things? Scared now that it's real? Too late. You're paying, no way around it."Seeing that begging wasn't working, Preston actually dropped to his knees and wrapped his arms around my legs, sobbing."I'm begging you, I'll die if you don't let this go! Just don't press charges, and I'll do anything you want! Please, have mercy!"Disgusted, I yanked my leg free and stepped back, looking down at him coldly. "Get up. There's no room to negotiate on the one million. Either you pay up, or you wait for the court summons."Preston slumped to th

"Take a good look. This is a certificate from an internationally recognized appraisal authority. Not only is it authentic, the current market valuation only ever goes up. Do you want me to read the certification number out loud?"It was in black and white text, with an official red seal—it was a slap across the face he couldn't argue with.Elmer stared at the screen, his face cycling through shades of green and white, and shrieked, "That has to be fake! You forged it! You're so desperate for money you're trying to shake me down with some phony document!"I didn't bother wasting more breath on him. I turned instead to Preston, who was already starting to look shaken, and gave him a faint, knowing smile."Preston, you're the one who smashed it—he just told you to. But if he can't come up with the money, the law's going to come looking for whoever actually did the damage. If Elmer won't cover this for you, that one million is coming out of your pocket."That landed exactly where it h

Elmer's face went bone white in an instant. He stood frozen, knuckles bleached where he gripped his phone, eyes wide with disbelief. "What do you mean, settle the balance? Isn't this a black card? Why would I have to pay anything back?"Watching him flounder like someone who'd never seen the real world, I couldn't help laughing, though there was a trace of pity in it."Elmer, do you actually not understand how a black card works? It's just a credit card with a higher limit than normal. Whatever you charge to it, you have to pay back eventually. Did you seriously think it was some kind of bottomless ATM?"Elmer's whole body locked up, like the life had drained straight out of him, his face gone sickly pale.Preston, oblivious to the fact that Elmer looked like he was about to collapse, kept right on running his mouth, rolling his eyes at me."Don't act like you're the only one who knows this stuff. Elmer just got found by his rich family—he hasn't gotten used to the whole high-soc

"Nice work! Here, this is the latest style—consider it your reward."Preston took the necklace, unable to hide how much he loved it, and shot me a look that dripped with even more disdain.Elmer rose to his feet and pointed at the thermos, the scarf, the desk lamp—all things I'd given him back when we first met—and sneered."Look at you, so full of yourself. Not like me—when I give someone a gift, I give them the best."And you? All you ever gave me was your own castoffs, just to make me feel small. Like this junk, for instance!"He snatched up the thermos and hurled it to the floor. There was a loud clang as the stainless steel body crumpled out of shape.Honestly, back when I'd given him those things, I was worried about hurting his pride, worried he'd feel like he was being handed charity. That's why I'd played it down, telling him they were just things sitting unused around my house. But every single item had been brand new, carefully picked out.Watching him smash things
