~ SIENNA ~My mail notification ping was growing into a much dreaded sound. Everytime I heard it these days, it was always to announce a rejection mail from yet another job I’d applied to. I ignored the ping, not eager to see which company was “sorry to inform me” this time and kept chopping the spring onions on the chopping board. The sound of steel on steel as the knife hit the board rattled my nerves but Margo had insisted a steel chopping board was the healthiest option so here we were. I was making some succotash and the kitchen already smelled delightful. When I’d added all the ingredients for the last lap of my cooking, I hoisted myself onto a chair and reached for my phone. It was either going to be a mobile game or an e-book to pass the ten minutes I had to wait for my food to be ready. Then I saw the new mail notification waiting on my lock screen and froze at once. I recognized the sender’s address. It wasn’t any company I’d applied to work with. It was Harry Joseman
~ GAVIN ~My stomach dropped. "You said he was at some tournament.”“He was.” There was a strong emphasis on ‘was’. “But apparently, he learnt about the masked party minutes ago and decided he wanted in on the fun. He's on the main floor right now, working his way towards the VIP section.”“Fùck,” I cussed through gritted teeth.Violet’s expression shifted instantly, the flirtatious ease replaced by a calculating frown.“I’ll go up first," she said. "Distract him. Buy you two a window to sneak out.”“Violet—“ I started. It would be disastrous for everyone if Bruise knew I was here, but even more if he found out his own sister was on my side and had been reporting club activities to me for years now. He’d had an inkling of our relationship when I was in the DMC but he probably thought everything ended when I left. “It’s me, Prez. Relax." She was already moving towards the door. "Give me two minutes, then walk out like you belong here. Masks stay on. Don't make eye contact with anyone.
~ GAVIN ~To be honest, I didn’t want to see it. I hoped it wouldn’t be there anymore. It was a tattoo I’d done when my skills were unrefined and even worse, my frontal lobe was underdeveloped. Why else did I agree to write the name of a biker club on a woman’s forehead? I winced at the sight of it, still there, partially hidden by a bandage. But I knew what it read.‘DMC’, in crude, gothic writing. Devil’s Machete Club. Violet had a strong loyalty to the club that had nothing to do with her brother being president. She’d stayed longer than most patch members and was easily one of the best riders I’d ever known. There was no need to ask her what happened with the bandage. Something was always happening around here and Violet would always be where she loved — right in the middle of it. “Thorne was talking trash about you before you walked in," I told her, continuing a funny, agelong tradition of us reporting each other to her. "Said you cursed three times in under a minute.”She
~ GAVIN ~“Business first, party after,” I said to Max as we walked past all of it, the smell of cigars, alcohol, and sex trailing behind us. VIP booths were further along the room and had doors for extra privacy. We went straight into the last one at the end of the floor. It had been closed off for weeks now citing ‘electrical repairs’ but really, it housed the entrance to the bunker beneath the building. I’d been building it since the beginning of the year and God, had this bunker gulped a shít ton of money. But I knew it would be worth it in the end. People would pay anything for an experience and a brag. Getting turnt underground? Now, that was something. “Some ladies were staring and they can’t even see your face. Are you really that good looking?” Max said as we stepped into the elevator.I laughed. “You’ve seen my face, so you tell me.”The elevator began its descent. “I only give compliments to people I want to fuck,” he muttered. “Speaking of — the dancer I hired for yo
~ GAVIN ~The car glided along the street without a sound — the exact reason I’d chosen it from my fleet for tonight’s mission. Near the end of the street, I turned into the curb and parked, darkness settling over everything once the headlights went off. The surroundings were quiet. No one would ever guess what was happening inside the building ahead of us. “Remind me why we’re doing this again?” Max mumbled, letting his head fall back against the headrest of the passenger seat. “I thought you’d already refused your brother’s request.”“I had.” I unclipped my seatbelt. “But now I need him to do something for me. So we’re making a trade.”Max snorted. “Does Edward ever do anything for you that isn’t in exchange for something?”“I don’t have a problem with it. It’s a good thing I always have something of value he wants and vice versa. Who wants a parasitic relationship?”“So what’s the thing you want from him now?”“A job,” I replied. Max did a double take, then burst into laughter.
~ SIENNA ~That was the last thing I expected to hear after Gavin had spent the better part of three minutes staring at me while absently demolishing my bag of chips. I frowned. “What does that mean?”“Your eyes.” His gaze settled on mine again. “I always thought grey eyes belonged to people who were cold. Detached.” A corner of his mouth lifted. “But here you are — refusing to hurt a man who has given you every reason to.”I was going to tell him he had the wrong lashes for a man like him — thick, dark lashes, the kind women paid good money to replicate — and they framed hazel eyes that had no business looking that dreamy. But saying that would imply I was spending far too much time studying his face, and I couldn’t admit that. Not to him, and definitely not to myself. “Yeah, Margo sometimes says I’m not mean enough.”Mentioning Margo’s name to Gavin made me feel very guilty. All she knew about my interview day was that I had met Nicole and we had a fight. She didn’t know the on
~ SIENNA ~ I shot up from the tattoo bed like it burned and held up the phone to Gavin. “What’s this?” He returned to his chair and lounged lazily on it, my panic obviously lost on him. “Your new tattoo. Like it?” “Why… why,” I stammered. “Why is it a tattoo of your name?” “Because I thought it
~ SIENNA ~I managed to cover his entire length, even if it left me gasping for air. Then I sucked hard, hollowing my cheeks, tongue flicking the piercings relentlessly as I tasted more of that salty essence, bitter at the edges like his personality. My mouth watered uncontrollably, thick strands o
~ SIENNA ~Really? This douche was going to make this even more humiliating than it already was for me. I matched his speed. “I thought it was obvious. First time?”Gavin roared in laughter. “No, babygirl,” he said, amusement still lingering in his voice. “I simply prefer clarity. I hate being cau
~ SIENNA ~The air hit me first — thick with the smell of leather and something metallic. There were no windows, creating an illusion of nighttime even though it was early afternoon. I found the light switch on the left wall, two scones flooding the space with a deep red light when I flipped it on
